No—not if “fail” means failing to find a large audience. Nintendo reports 101.63 million Wii consoles and 921.85 million Wii software units sold worldwide through June 30, 2026. Those lifetime totals make the Wii a commercial success by reach, though they do not establish its profit, how satisfied every owner was, or whether Nintendo met every strategic goal.
What does “fail” mean for the Wii?
A console can succeed at attracting buyers and still lose momentum later, face challenges carrying its audience into a successor, or fall short of a company’s financial or strategic goals. Those are different questions. Nintendo’s published lifetime unit totals answer the question of reach clearly; the available figures do not establish Wii-specific lifetime profit.

How many Wii consoles and games did Nintendo sell?
Nintendo’s worldwide consolidated sales page reports 101.63 million Wii hardware units and 921.85 million Wii software units, with data as of June 30, 2026. These are life-to-date unit totals, not revenue or profit figures. Nintendo’s worldwide hardware and software sales figures also list 13.56 million Wii U hardware units and 103.60 million Wii U software units. The Wii U figures describe the successor, not the Wii, and do not change what the Wii’s own lifetime totals show.

Strong sales across one generation do not guarantee that those customers will move to the next console. In a 2015 TIME interview, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima described the challenge this way: “The point that I was trying to get across was that Wii has sold so much and is being played by so many people, it’s not going to be easy to make them leave that and come to the next system.” Kimishima’s interview with TIME is evidence of Nintendo’s stated view of the transition, not a complete explanation of Wii U’s sales or proof that the Wii itself failed.

Did the Wii lose momentum?
Its lifetime total should not be mistaken for steady sales throughout its life. Contemporary analysis of Nintendo financial-report data discussed declining momentum around successor launches, including the Wii as Wii U arrived. Nintendo Life’s 2013 analysis of sales after successor launches provides that period context. A slowdown late in a console’s life can coexist with very high lifetime sales.
What do Nintendo’s later financial results prove?
They should not be used to assign Wii U’s difficulties to the Wii. Reporting on Nintendo’s 2013–14 results attributed Wii U operating losses in part to hardware markdowns and insufficient growth in high-margin software sales. Those points concern Wii U, not the Wii. Nintendo Life’s coverage of the 2013–14 results also reported that Nintendo projected 3.6 million Wii U hardware units for fiscal 2014–15; that was a period-specific forecast, not a lifetime total. Neither the reported Wii U losses nor its forecast establish the Wii’s own profitability.

What does the Wii Shop closure mean for owners?
Nintendo ended new purchases on the Wii Shop Channel on January 30, 2019, after more than twelve years of operation, citing customers’ shift toward the eShop on Switch and 3DS. Nintendo’s Wii Shop Channel closure information describes the end of purchases; that closure alone does not mean all Wii games stopped working. The cited page says remaining services were to end at a future date but does not establish their current status or guarantee that downloads can still be redownloaded.
