No source we reviewed shows that. The headline fuses three separate lines of evidence: red face paint found on a human child, camelid bones found at a different site, and an unresolved debate over how some sacrificed children died. Each is real. Together they don’t establish dressed, painted llamas buried alive.
Where the claim goes wrong
The Museum of High Altitude Archaeology (MAAM) in Salta, Argentina, describes red pigment on the face of the Llullaillaco Maiden. She was a human child of about 15 buried at the summit of Llullaillaco. The paint belongs to her, not to a llama. A peer-reviewed study of Inca burials on Misti volcano separately reports camelid bone fragments. Neither source describes llamas wearing tassels or face paint.

| Face paint | Red pigment on the Maiden’s face, per MAAM | Llullaillaco | Direct observation of human remains |
| Llamas or camelids | Bone fragments, probably from a young camelid, in one tomb; possibly only a lower limb | Misti | Direct finding, with interpretation |
| Burial alive | Inferred from lack of visible trauma; cause of death unknown in most cases | Llullaillaco (children) | Inference, contested |
| Tassels on llamas | Not established by the sources reviewed | None | None |
The ritual: capacocha
MAAM describes capacocha as an important Inca ritual that linked people with deities and sacred places and reinforced ties between ethnic groups and the state. Its account of children being selected and escorted from Cusco draws on chroniclers. That is a written historical tradition, not something archaeologists observed directly at the graves.

MAAM says three children lay inside an elevated ceremonial platform with funerary offerings. The Maiden wore a dress, a geometric sash and a woven cloak fastened with a silver tupu. Her face was painted red, and coca fragments were in her mouth. The museum describes the other two children’s clothing and ornaments separately. All of this concerns people. Dressing and painting are documented for the child, not for animals.

What was found at Misti
The Misti study reports animal bone fragments in one tomb, probably camelid. The authors infer that only a lower limb may have been placed there. They suggest that burying young llamas or alpacas with children could fit the ceremony’s symbolic logic. That is a reasoned interpretation. It is not evidence of live, decorated llamas, and it comes from a different volcano than the Maiden.
Were the children buried alive?
The best-preserved Llullaillaco mummies show no visible trauma. Some scholars have therefore inferred suffocation or burial alive. The Misti article stresses that the cause of death is unknown in most capacocha cases, so absence of injury is not proof of a particular method.

A PNAS study of the three Llullaillaco children adds chemical evidence. Hair analysis was consistent with coca and alcohol exposure. The authors argue the Maiden may have been heavily sedated, or recently dead, when she was entombed. This points to preparation before burial. It doesn’t settle whether anyone was alive at the end, and it says nothing about animals.
A more accurate version of the headline
- The Llullaillaco Maiden, a child, had red paint on her face and was dressed in elaborate textiles and a silver tupu.
- At Misti, bones probably from a young camelid were found in a tomb, and researchers suggest young llamas or alpacas may have accompanied children.
- Live burial is one proposed explanation for the children’s deaths. The evidence leaves the cause open.
If you see the original claim online, check which site, which subject (human, animal bone or figurine) and what kind of evidence it rests on. Cause-of-death claims and claims about clothing or grave goods are separate questions, and the sources support them to different degrees.
