Did the FBI Warn Jay-Z of an “Imminent” Email Hack? What the 2021 Reports Actually Establish

Reports said an unnamed source told Complex that federal officials warned Jay-Z (Shawn Carter) of an “imminent hack” targeting his email account and advised him to delete sensitive messages. That account was published on November 10, 2021. It was not an FBI confirmation, included no technical indicators, and does not establish that Jay-Z’s account was ever breached.

What the original report said

Complex reported on November 10, 2021, that an unnamed source said federal officials had urged Jay-Z to delete his emails because the FBI had warned of an “imminent hack” on his email account. Complex said further details about the alleged hacking concern were not immediately available.

NME repeated the account on November 11, describing the advice as a warning to remove sensitive emails. Neither report identified an attacker, said when the alleged contact occurred, supplied technical evidence, or confirmed that an intrusion had taken place.

Was Jay-Z’s account actually hacked?

There is no public confirmation in these reports that Jay-Z’s email account was breached. “Imminent hack” is the wording attributed to the unnamed source, not a published technical finding by the FBI. The identity of any alleged attacker and whether an attack succeeded remain unconfirmed.

Why was he reportedly told to delete emails?

The story appeared while Jay-Z was involved in litigation with Parlux Fragrances. Complex said a judge had previously ruled that Jay-Z destroyed evidence by deleting emails; NME also connected the warning coverage to that lawsuit. That legal background made any advice to delete messages especially newsworthy.

However, the available accounts do not show that the lawsuit caused the warning or that the litigation and the alleged security concern were operationally connected. They establish only that the warning was reported during a case in which deleted email was already a legal issue.

The separate FBI email incident on November 13, 2021

Two days after the Complex report, the FBI said fake emails had been sent from an FBI-operated server because of a software misconfiguration. The server belonged to the Law Enforcement Enterprise Portal, not the bureau’s corporate email service.

According to the FBI, the incident did not involve an actor accessing or compromising FBI network data or personally identifiable information, and the vulnerability was remediated. The Washington Post described the messages as mass-distributed fake cyberattack alerts sent through that portal.

What the FBI recommends for suspicious email threats

The FBI’s general business-email-compromise guidance applies regardless of whether a particular warning is genuine. Criminals may spoof trusted senders, use spearphishing, or deploy malware to obtain access to email threads and account information.

  1. Do not click unsolicited links or attachments. Treat unexpected requests and warnings as untrusted until verified.
  2. Verify independently. Use a phone number or other contact method found separately, rather than replying to the message or using its links.
  3. Enable two-factor or multi-factor authentication. A second authentication factor can reduce the damage from a stolen password.
  4. Preserve relevant records when legal obligations apply. Security advice to protect an account does not, by itself, override litigation holds or evidence-preservation duties; organizations should involve qualified legal counsel.

The sources do not say which of these controls Jay-Z used, whether any were recommended to him in 2021, or whether his account showed signs of compromise.

What can responsibly be concluded

  • On November 10, 2021, Complex reported that an unnamed source described an FBI warning of an “imminent hack” and advice for Jay-Z to delete emails.
  • NME repeated the account the following day, but neither publication provided technical details or confirmation of a breach.
  • The report ran amid Parlux Fragrances litigation in which deleted emails were already disputed evidence.
  • The FBI’s November 13 fake-email incident involved a separate, misconfigured FBI-operated server and was not proof of an attack on Jay-Z.
