No public evidence currently confirms that the AFL instructed Sportsbet to stop using players in AI-generated content. The claim remains unverified as of 13 October 2026. Available official material confirms the AFL–Sportsbet partnership and documents other Sportsbet AI projects, but it does not establish an order, identify the content involved or show how Sportsbet responded.
What is actually confirmed
Sportsbet identifies itself as the official wagering partner of the AFL and AFLW. That commercial relationship is documented by Sportsbet, but the partnership page does not describe an arrangement allowing Sportsbet to generate advertising featuring player likenesses, voices or identities.

The available sources contain no AFL statement, Sportsbet announcement or reliable published report confirming that the league told the bookmaker to stop using players in AI-generated material. They also provide no date for an alleged instruction, wording of a demand, list of affected players or evidence that any content was removed.
Why the claim may be confused with other Sportsbet AI activity
A commentator chatbot is a separate example
The Australian Communications and Media Authority’s 2026 report on AI and interactive gambling says Sportsbet launched an AI chatbot in 2025 programmed to act like a specific AFL commentator. The report attributes Sportsbet technology executive Niall Keating saying, “to understand our customers, we use data and AI.” Neither point establishes that the chatbot used player likenesses or that the AFL objected to it.

A commentator-style chatbot, an advertisement using a player’s face, and synthetic video or audio of a player involve different material and potentially different permissions. Treating the documented chatbot as proof of a player-content dispute would go beyond what the report says.
Sportsbet’s AI Assistant terms do not settle the allegation
Sportsbet’s AI Assistant terms state: “Sportsbet AI Assistant has been developed for entertainment purposes only.” They warn that the tool has limitations and should not be relied on without independent verification before making betting decisions. Those terms govern the assistant; they do not explain whether Sportsbet may create promotional content depicting AFL players.

What the published Sportsbet rules do—and do not—show
Sportsbet’s rules and terms include provisions for user-generated content. They describe automated tools and human review to detect potentially contravening material. The search material does not establish that these clauses govern Sportsbet-produced advertising, social posts or other company-generated campaigns. It also does not address player likeness rights in the alleged situation.

What remains unanswered
- Whether the AFL sent any instruction, and on what date.
- Whether the material involved real player faces, names, voices, statistics or generic fictional representations.
- Which players or teams were allegedly shown.
- Whether the content was paid advertising, editorial material, social media, a product feature or another format.
- What contractual, consent or licensing basis was relied upon.
- Whether players, clubs or the AFL Players’ Association were consulted.
- Whether Sportsbet removed, edited or left the material online.
How to assess a future update
A credible confirmation should include an original AFL communication or an on-record statement from an AFL spokesperson identifying the recipient, date and requested action. Sportsbet’s response should say what content was affected and whether it changed or removed anything. Reporting should also distinguish the player’s likeness, voice and name, because each may raise different contractual or publicity-rights questions.
The platform and audience matter as well. A television commercial, a targeted betting promotion, an organic social post and an in-product chatbot are not interchangeable. A report that does not identify the format or show the disputed material cannot establish the scope of the issue.
Keep unrelated AFL statements separate
AFL CEO Andrew Dillon issued a statement on 18 August 2026 about a separate investigation involving Sydney Swans players. That statement is unrelated to the Sportsbet AI allegation and should not be presented as a response to it.
Bottom line on the headline
The headline “AFL tells Sportsbet to stop using players in AI generated content” is not established by the currently available evidence. What can be stated is narrower: Sportsbet is the AFL and AFLW’s official wagering partner; it has documented AI products, including a 2025 commentator-style chatbot; and its published assistant and moderation terms do not confirm how player imagery or likenesses are handled. Until the AFL, Sportsbet or reliable reporting provides a direct account, the alleged instruction should be treated as an unverified claim rather than a confirmed event.
