In late April 2024, reports said Tesla had eliminated its roughly 500-person Supercharger group. That supports a large team-wide layoff, but not the stronger claim that every employee in every Supercharger-related role at Tesla was dismissed. Tesla said it would continue expanding the network at a slower pace, with more emphasis on uptime and existing sites.
Did Tesla lay off its entire Supercharger team?
Associated Press reporting said team leaders told staff that the roughly 500-person charging group had been eliminated. Axios reported that charging executive Rebecca Tinucci and substantially all of her team were laid off. Elon Musk appeared to confirm the move, according to AP.

Those accounts describe the group responsible for the Supercharger network; they do not establish that literally every Tesla employee whose work touched Superchargers, across all roles, was dismissed. Former Tesla North America charging real-estate acquisition leader Lane Chaplin wrote, “Unfortunately the charging organization at Tesla is no more,” as quoted by the Associated Press.
Why did Tesla lay off the Supercharger employees?
The cited reports do not establish a detailed reason for the layoffs. Musk’s contemporaneous public statement described a change in the pace and emphasis of network growth, not a full halt. Reuters reported that he said Tesla would add to the network “just at a slower pace for new locations and more focus on 100% uptime and expansion of existing locations.”

That distinction matters: opening new sites and adding capacity at existing sites are different kinds of work. The statement outlined Tesla’s stated priorities at the time; it does not prove how the company carried them out afterward. Reuters’ April 30, 2024 report also recorded contemporaneous reactions from automakers and an analyst.
Would Tesla stop building Superchargers?
No such total stop was announced in the cited reporting. Musk’s stated plan was slower construction of new locations alongside a focus on uptime and expansion at existing sites. AP’s May 1, 2024 report described that as Tesla’s plan at the time; it is not evidence of the network’s current construction pace.

For scale, AP quoted U.S. Department of Energy figures showing 2,261 U.S. fast-charging stations and 25,491 plugs at the time of its 2024 report. Those are a contemporaneous count, not a current total, and the report did not establish how the layoffs later affected expansion or reliability.

The layoff reports did not announce that access for other automakers’ vehicles would be withdrawn. Automakers’ public comments were mixed in tone, but neither indicated an immediate change to their plans: Ford said its plans were unchanged, while GM said it was monitoring potential effects, according to AP and Axios.

That distinction is important because automaker access depended on integration and operating arrangements as well as Tesla’s own network work. In April 2024, the reports described concern about possible disruption; they did not document a measured decline in reliability or confirm that access plans had subsequently changed. Axios’ April 30, 2024 account reported that Tinucci and substantially all of her roughly 500-person team were laid off.

- Established: Musk’s contemporaneous statement called for slower new-site growth and more attention to uptime and existing locations.
- Not established by these reports: Tesla’s current Supercharger staffing or strategy, a post-layoff change in uptime or expansion, or a later change to other automakers’ vehicle access.
AP quoted an analyst warning of a reliability risk. That was a contemporaneous concern, not a measurement showing that reliability worsened after the layoffs. The reports are about an April 2024 workforce action, not a new announcement or proof of its long-term effects.
