The account says Chapman first stood on a footbridge above the enclosure and asked a stranger to photograph him with the tiger behind him. Minutes later, he climbed into the enclosure. A City of Doncaster Council health-and-safety inquiry was planned.
What a witness reported
Anthony Hunt, identified as a 22-year-old zoo-goer, told the newspaper that Chapman had his arms wide open, “like he was saying: ‘Come here, tiger. Kill me’.” That is witness testimony about what Hunt believed he saw; it does not establish Chapman’s intention or explain why he entered the enclosure.

What is known about Chapman’s health and care
The report says Chapman had schizophrenia and bouts of psychosis and was receiving mental-health services while living in Doncaster. His family raised concerns about that care. A family statement described him as “a bright, warm and engaging young man whom his family dearly loved – and William loved them back.” It also said he had suffered from “significant mental illness over a number of years” and had consequently been prescribed strong medicine. The report said the full inquest hearing was expected in March 2027. That timetable can change, so the date should be confirmed through the coroner before publication or relied on as a firm schedule.
