The episode coverage available by October 3, 2026, does not show one Traitor betraying another. The early shock was a recruitment twist: Maya Jama and Richard E. Grant had to choose between James Acaster and Amol Rajan, and episode-two reporting says Acaster joined the Traitors while Rajan was murdered.
What was the early twist?
In the October 1, 2026 premiere, Claudia Winkleman selected Maya Jama and Richard E. Grant as the initial Traitors. The series began with 21 celebrity players, and the contestants could win up to £100,000 for charities of their choice, according to Goss.ie’s premiere report.

The twist came when the pair were allowed to put forward two candidates to plead to join their team. The selected candidate would become a Traitor; the other would be murdered. They chose James Acaster and Amol Rajan. Episode-two coverage says Acaster was recruited and Rajan was murdered, as The Standard reported.

Why did viewers think there had been a betrayal?
Some of the surprise appears to have been about the number of Traitors, not a betrayal. The previous season had begun with three, while this premiere started with two. Goss.ie quoted viewers asking, “Only two Traitors?” and “Am I missing something or did we only see two people picked for Traitors?” Those posts illustrate reactions reported by the outlet; they are not a poll of the audience.

Richard E. Grant also told Joe Lycett, “I am a traitor,” and later appeared to backtrack, according to The Standard’s premiere coverage. That reported in-game disclosure and reversal may have added to the confusion, but the report does not describe it as one Traitor betraying another.
How did James Acaster react to being recruited?
The Standard reported Acaster saying, “I can’t believe I’m a Traitor, I’m gutted to not be Faithful anymore, I don’t like lying, but if I don’t join, then they kill me.” The outlet also quoted a viewer saying, “I really feel for James Acaster, he wanted so badly to be a faithful and have fun being a detective”. These are reported remarks, not evidence of a Traitor-on-Traitor betrayal.

After a mission, Jerry Hall and Hannah Fry were vulnerable to murder. The Standard’s episode-two report ends with the round table on a cliffhanger, leaving the banishment unresolved in that coverage. It does not establish what happened after that point, so the result should not be inferred from the report.
