Did Meteorites Bring the Building Blocks of Life to Earth?

Meteorites contain organic compounds, including amino acids, and records of water-driven chemistry on the asteroids they came from. That makes them plausible carriers of some ingredients for prebiotic chemistry on early Earth—not evidence that they carried life or explain how life began. NASA says it remains unknown whether meteorites were an important source of materials for Earth life.

What does “organic” mean in meteorites?

In this context, “organic” describes carbon-containing chemical compounds; it does not mean that a sample is biological or was made by living things. Carbonaceous chondrites contain both insoluble organic material and a varied mix of soluble compounds, including hydrocarbons, acids, amino acids, amines, and nitrogen-containing ring molecules. NASA’s review explains that water alteration and heating on primitive asteroids could both form and break down these compounds (NASA Technical Reports Server review).

One proposed chemical pathway involves hexamethylenetetramine (HMT). NASA reports detections of HMT and related compounds in the Murchison, Murray, and Tagish Lake meteorites. Experiments discussed in NASA’s account found that water, ammonia, and methanol could produce HMT and other organics under extraterrestrial photochemical and thermal conditions. Because HMT can degrade during common analytical procedures, the researchers used an extraction method designed to limit that breakdown. This is evidence for a possible route to some organics, not a complete account of life’s origin (NASA on HMT in meteorites).

What evidence links meteorite organics to water?

Hillsborough records ancient brines

The Hillsborough meteorite fell on July 16, 2024, and was recovered quickly. NASA identifies it as a CM carbonaceous chondrite. Researchers found microscopic fractures containing sodium-rich material and fragile sodium-carbonate salts, interpreted as remnants of brines on the meteorite’s parent asteroid. They also reported a diverse set of amino acids and other organic compounds. The quick recovery helped limit the time these fragile materials were exposed to Earth’s environment (NASA’s Hillsborough report).

The findings show that salty water altered this asteroid and that complex organic chemistry was present in the sample. They do not show that the asteroid hosted life or that its compounds became life on Earth. Mike Zolensky, a meteorite researcher at NASA Johnson Space Center, said: “Following the history of water through the solar system is an essential part of understanding the origin of life.”

Water can change organic chemistry

Water on an asteroid is not simply a container for preserved ingredients. It can enable chemical reactions that make or alter organic compounds, while heating and other reactions can destroy some of them. The evidence therefore points to chemically active parent bodies, not a uniform storehouse of finished biological ingredients.

What do returned asteroid samples add?

Asteroid samples brought back by spacecraft provide a useful complement to meteorites. Meteorites have passed through Earth’s atmosphere and may have spent time in terrestrial environments; returned samples are collected and curated under mission procedures. The two kinds of evidence also have different limits: results depend on which material was sampled, how much was allocated, and what an analysis could detect.

Sample Reported evidence Important qualification
Hillsborough meteorite Ancient brine remnants, amino acids, and other organic compounds Recovered quickly, but it is still a meteorite that fell to Earth.
Ryugu returned sample Initial soluble-organics analysis found amino-acid results broadly consistent with some water-exposed carbonaceous meteorites. The analysis team received 30 milligrams. It did not identify sugars or nucleobases in that material; NASA noted they might have been below detection limits.
Bennu returned sample A 2025 NASA Technical Reports Server abstract reports 14 of the 20 standard amino acids used in terrestrial biology, all five nucleobases found in DNA and RNA, and about 10,000 nitrogen-bearing chemical species. The abstract’s counts describe the analyzed returned material; they do not show that Bennu and other asteroids had identical histories.

For Bennu, the 2025 abstract says isotopic enrichments indicate that some compounds or their precursors formed in a cold environment, such as a molecular cloud or the outer protoplanetary disk. It also describes the compound distributions as consistent with formation and alteration during low-temperature aqueous processing on Bennu’s parent body (NASA Technical Reports Server abstract on Bennu).

Genuine Campo Del Cielo 20-30 gram Meteorite Nugget
  • Starborn Genuine Campo Del Cielo Meteorite Nugget 20-30 gram - 1 per order. Each Meteorite nugget is unique and will vary slightly, but will be similar to ones pictured in the images. Size approx. 1 by 3/4 inch, 20-30 grams
  • These exciting meteorite fragments have a unique nugget shape caused by fractures in the natural crystalline structure of this Iron-Nickel Meteorite.
  • The Campo Del Cielo Meteorite was discovered by the Spanish in 1576; it struck the earth approximately 5000 years ago in what is today Chaco Gulamba, Argentina.

Ryugu’s initial analysis should not be read as proof that the asteroid lacks sugars or nucleobases: a non-detection in a small sample can reflect analytical limits. NASA also notes that different liquid-water histories are one reason direct comparisons between Ryugu and other bodies matter (NASA’s account of the Ryugu analysis).

Could meteorites have supplied ingredients to early Earth?

Impacts could have delivered some organic compounds and elements relevant to prebiotic chemistry. NASA’s educational resource says meteorites could have brought CHNOPS elements—carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and sulfur—for living things to use later. It also states plainly: “We don’t yet know if these meteorites were an important source of materials for Earth life” (NASA’s educational overview of life’s building blocks).

A NASA Technical Reports Server review abstract estimated that about 40 million kilograms of asteroid and fragment material impact Earth each year. That is an estimate for present-day delivery, not a measurement of how much material reached Earth during the origin-of-life era, and it does not establish how much of that material was useful to prebiotic chemistry (NASA Technical Reports Server review).

What the evidence does—and does not—establish

  • Established: Some meteorites and returned asteroid samples contain diverse organic compounds, including amino acids and, in Bennu analyses, nucleobases.
  • Established: Water-related alteration occurred on some primitive asteroid parent bodies and affected their chemistry.
  • Not established: The presence of these compounds means a meteorite carried organisms, that life existed on an asteroid, or that meteorite delivery was the decisive source of life’s ingredients on Earth.
  • Still open: How much meteorites contributed compared with other sources and chemical processes, and how nonliving chemistry ultimately led to life.
