Did HP Reject Steve Wozniak Five Times? Why He Says He Started Apple—and the $50 Paycheck Claim

Steve Wozniak says Hewlett-Packard turned down his personal-computer proposal five times. He has also said he did not begin the project to start a company or make money: he wanted to build an interesting computer and show his engineering work to other engineers. The often-repeated $50 figure is different: Fortune reported it as an approximate amount deposited weekly after savings and taxes, not Wozniak’s full salary or total compensation.

Did HP reject Steve Wozniak five times?

That is Wozniak’s recollection. In a 2026 Fast Company oral history, he said he wanted Hewlett-Packard to take on his personal-computer design, demonstrated its cost and capabilities, and was turned down. He described the first rejection as “the first of five turndowns from Hewlett-Packard,” then added that he and Steve Jobs had to go into business on their own: Fast Company’s 2026 oral history.

Fortune also reported five rejections in a May 22, 2026 story. These are retrospective accounts of Wozniak’s experience, not a published HP record independently documenting five separate proposal decisions. The careful answer is that Wozniak says HP rejected the idea five times.

Why did Wozniak want to build the computer?

Wozniak’s accounts emphasize the engineering project rather than a plan to found a company. In remarks reported by InfoWorld after his 2017 IEEE TechIgnite appearance, he said: “My motivation wasn’t to start a company, wasn’t to make money, it was actually just to show off my engineering excellence.” InfoWorld’s report also recounts his account of HP’s rejection.

In a 2026 commencement address at Grand Valley State University, as quoted by Fortune, Wozniak put the point plainly: “When we started Apple, did I want to make money? Start a company? Start an industry? No.” That is his retrospective description of his motive; it does not mean the business that followed was not intended to sell products.

His earlier account is consistent with that explanation. In a 1992 interview hosted by the American Archive of Public Broadcasting, he said: “I was not designing the computer for a company. I was just designing a computer to have, to use for my job, to play games.” The interview is available through the American Archive of Public Broadcasting.

How did Jobs turn the design into a business?

Wozniak’s account distinguishes making a computer from making a company. He had shared designs and ideas with the Homebrew Computer Club; Jobs saw commercial potential and encouraged them to produce boards and computers as a business. The HP proposal’s rejection was followed by the two working together independently.

The 1992 interview gives a concrete example of how they financed early printed-circuit-board work. Wozniak said he sold his HP-65 calculator for $500, while Jobs sold his van. Wozniak explained that parting with the calculator was manageable because a newer model was coming and he could obtain it at a lower employee price. These details come from Wozniak’s account in that interview, rather than a general accounting of Apple’s founding finances.

Was Wozniak’s paycheck really only $50?

Fortune’s May 22, 2026 story attributes the figure to a separate podcast interview Wozniak gave in 2020. In Fortune’s telling, he said that he remained an Apple employee and received a paycheck every week; after savings and taxes, “$50 a week or something” reached his bank account. The figure is approximate and describes the reported net deposit, not gross wages, annual salary, or everything he received in compensation.

Fortune also says Wozniak remained on Apple’s payroll after stepping back from full-time involvement in 1985. The $50 anecdote should therefore not be read as proof that Apple paid him only $50 in wages each week throughout his career. It is a recollection about what he said reached his account after deductions and savings, reported by Fortune from the 2020 podcast; Fortune’s account is the available basis for the claim.

What the accounts establish—and what they do not

The central story is supported by Wozniak’s own recollections in different settings: a 1992 archival interview, remarks reported in 2017, and a 2026 oral history. They consistently present the original design as an engineering pursuit, followed by a decision with Jobs to commercialize the work. The exact count of HP rejections and the paycheck detail remain attributed recollections rather than independently audited figures. Apple’s later success does not change what Wozniak says motivated him at the start.
