Thomas Tuchel’s treatment of Trent Alexander-Arnold exposed a real tension in England’s World Cup campaign: prioritising defensive security and group cohesion can come at the cost of passing range and control. Tuchel questioned Trent’s defensive discipline, left him out of the squad, and later switched England to a back five while protecting a lead against Argentina. That pattern supports an argument that England became too cautious. It does not prove fear was Tuchel’s motive—or that selecting Trent would have changed the result.
Why did Tuchel leave Trent Alexander-Arnold out?
Tuchel’s doubts were specific, not a blanket dismissal of Alexander-Arnold’s ability. In August 2025, after leaving him out of a qualifying squad, Tuchel said he was a fan of Trent but had chosen Reece James and Tino Livramento for that right-back camp. He framed the decision as competition for places.

He also questioned the balance of Trent’s game. In a BBC Sport report published on August 29, 2025, Tuchel said: “I can see that sometimes he relies heavily on his offensive contributions and gives not so much emphasis on the defensive discipline and effort.” He stressed the stakes of a lapse: “Because when we are talking, especially about qualifying football, and then tournament football, the one defensive error, the one moment where you are not 100% awake, can be decisive.”
That is evidence of a manager placing a high value on defensive reliability. It is not evidence that Tuchel privately feared Trent, or that his concerns were unfounded. Nor does the record establish how Trent would have performed in the role Tuchel wanted.

What did Tuchel say about the World Cup squad?
In May 2026, Tuchel named a 26-player World Cup squad without Alexander-Arnold, Phil Foden or Cole Palmer. England Football’s squad announcement described the broader selection approach in terms of chemistry, trust, leadership and cohesion. Tuchel put it this way: “The best group is not necessarily the 26 most talented players.”
That general explanation should not be mistaken for a separate, specific reason given for each player’s omission. The public record supports the conclusion that Tuchel valued how the group fitted together; it does not establish that he cited the same factor in every individual case.
The trade-off behind the selection
| Priority | What it offers | What it may cost |
|---|---|---|
| Defensive security | A manager may prefer players he trusts to maintain their shape and avoid costly lapses. | More cautious choices can reduce passing range or the ability to progress the ball from deep. |
| Cohesion and role fit | A settled group can offer trust, clarity and reliable execution of assigned jobs. | Leaving out highly technical players can narrow tactical options, particularly when a team needs to keep possession or create chances. |
Trent’s distinctive passing made his omission relevant to the debate about England’s ability to progress the ball. But that does not make him a guaranteed solution: the sources do not show that his inclusion would have fixed England’s problems or altered a particular match.

Why did England switch to a back five against Argentina?
England lost 2–1 to Argentina in the semi-final after taking a second-half lead. As Argentina pressed, Tuchel changed England to a back five and defended the move as a response to the threat in front of him. Sky Sports’ match account describes England becoming more defensive in personnel as Argentina applied pressure.
There are two reasonable ways to read that decision. Protecting a lead by adding defensive cover can be a coherent response to an opponent’s pressure. But dropping deeper can also surrender territory and make it harder to retain the ball or continue threatening. The available account establishes Tuchel’s stated intention and the more defensive shift; it does not, on its own, settle whether the change was the right call.
Did England play too cautiously?
After the semi-final, Tuchel said possession mattered but suggested that controlling a match with the ball was less embedded in English football than in Spain or Argentina and Brazil. “I think ball possession plays a crucial role; it’s maybe not in our DNA like it is in our Spanish DNA or in our Argentinian-Brazilian DNA, to take the ball and control the game with the ball,” he said, as quoted by Sky Sports.

Gary Neville criticised the implication, arguing that Tuchel had left technically skilled players—including Trent—at home. The Guardian’s retrospective also identified tactical flaws and described England as relying on stout defending and moments of inspiration for much of the tournament, while noting debate about forward-passing options. Those are attributed assessments, not an official finding that one selection or tactical decision caused the loss.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe case for calling England’s approach fearful rests on a pattern: Tuchel warned that one defensive error could decide a tournament, excluded a high-profile attacking passer after raising concerns about his defensive work, and later made a more defensive change while England led. The counterargument is that each choice can be understood as an attempt to manage risk, build a cohesive group or answer the match situation. The evidence shows caution as a recurring priority; it cannot prove Tuchel’s private motive.

No available evidence establishes that. England’s 2–1 semi-final defeat followed a defensive shift, and critics argued that the team lacked technical options to control the ball. But no named statistical study or published figure in the cited accounts measures fear or shows that Trent’s omission caused the result. There is no sound basis for claiming that selecting him would have changed the score.
Tuchel described the Argentina game as England’s first defeat in 15 official matches under him—14 prior matches without defeat, excluding friendlies—in remarks reported by England Football. Before the bronze-medal match, he said: “We were deservedly in the semi-final, we are one of the top four nations and we wanted this place in the semi-final and we wanted more.” Those statements capture both the achievement and the disappointment, but do not resolve the tactical argument.
