The “a ton” poaching claim and the allegation that Tesla demanded “shitty terms” for its AI5 chip are not independently verified. What is documented is that Samsung’s Taylor, Texas, facility has begun prototype-wafer production for Tesla’s AI5 on a 2-nanometer process, with volume supply planned for 2027. Tesla is also recruiting semiconductor engineers in Korea, while Elon Musk says a separate Terafab project intends to use Intel’s future 14A process.
What Samsung’s Taylor fab is confirmed to be making
AI5 has reached prototype production
Yonhap reported on July 13, 2026, that Samsung had begun preparations to manufacture Tesla’s AI5 after a Samsung executive said the chip had completed tape-out. Tape-out is the final design handoff before a chip enters manufacturing.

Samsung said its Taylor, Texas, plant would use a 2-nanometer process. Initial operations were expected later in 2026, with mass production for major customers, including Tesla, targeted for 2027.
Seoul Economic Daily reported on September 15, 2026, that Taylor had started prototype-wafer production for AI5, was checking manufacturing yields and planned to provide full supply the following year. Prototype production and yield verification do not mean that high-volume commercial manufacturing has already begun.

AI5 is intended for several Tesla businesses
AI5 is Tesla’s custom processor for Full Self-Driving, Optimus humanoid robots and artificial-intelligence data centers. The reported vehicle programs include Model 3, Model Y and Cybercab, alongside Optimus and data-center workloads.
What the Samsung-Tesla contract reveals—and what it does not
Seoul Economic Daily put the value of the 2025 Samsung Electronics–Tesla contract at $16.5 billion. That is the disclosed contract value reported in September 2026; the public reporting does not provide a complete breakdown of per-chip pricing, payment schedules, yield guarantees, penalties or other commercial terms.
Consequently, the available record cannot establish whether Tesla asked Samsung for unusually unfavorable conditions. The phrase “shitty terms” is an allegation attributed to a Korean engineer, not a term published in the reported contract.

Poaching allegation: confirmed facts versus unverified wording
| Claim or fact | Status | What the public reporting supports |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Taylor is making AI5 prototypes | Confirmed by September 2026 reporting | Prototype wafers were reportedly in production, with yield verification under way. |
| Taylor will use a 2nm process | Confirmed as Samsung’s stated plan | Initial operations were expected in late 2026 and volume production in 2027. |
| Tesla hired “a ton” of Samsung Taylor engineers | Not independently verified | No reliable published count or personnel list establishes the scale of any move from Taylor to Tesla. |
| Tesla requested “shitty terms” for AI5 | Not independently verified | No source in the available record publishes the alleged terms or a direct transcript documenting the wording. |
| Tesla is recruiting Korean chip talent | Confirmed | Tesla Korea sought AI-chip design engineers and related technical staff. |
The distinction matters because a recruiting campaign demonstrates hiring intent, not that a particular group of Samsung employees accepted Tesla offers. Likewise, a large contract value does not reveal whether the underlying terms favor the buyer or the foundry.
Tesla’s Korean recruiting is real, but it is not proof of Taylor defections
The Korea Times reported on February 18, 2026, that Musk posted a Korean recruiting appeal: If you’re in Korea and want to work on chip design, fabrication or AI software, join Tesla!
Tesla Korea’s notice sought AI-chip design engineers and asked applicants to describe their three most challenging technical problems.
Those details show that Tesla is actively building semiconductor and AI expertise in Korea. They do not identify applicants’ current employers, confirm that Samsung Taylor staff moved to Tesla, or quantify any alleged talent loss.

What Terafab is supposed to be
Musk describes a different manufacturing route
In comments reported after Tesla’s April 23, 2026, earnings call, Musk said: We plan to use Intel’s 14A process, which is state-of-the-art and in fact not yet totally complete.
Intel 14A is therefore a planned process choice, not evidence that Terafab is already producing AI5 chips.

SpaceX would handle high-volume manufacturing under the plan. Public reporting did not define the licensing structure or provide a production start date.
Terafab and Taylor are not interchangeable
| Samsung Taylor | Terafab proposal | |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Contract foundry manufacturing Tesla AI5 | Tesla-led pilot research fabrication, with SpaceX described as the high-volume manufacturer |
| Process | Samsung 2nm | Intel 14A, which Musk said was not yet fully complete in April 2026 |
| Current status | Prototype wafers and yield verification reported in September 2026 | Proposed pilot plan; operating status and licensing details not established |
| Scale reported | Full supply planned for 2027 | A few thousand wafers per month for the pilot; high-volume scale assigned to SpaceX |
Based on those descriptions, Terafab would represent an in-house or affiliated manufacturing strategy, while Taylor is a contracted Samsung foundry operation. A Tesla employee moving between the projects would not, by itself, prove that Samsung’s Taylor workforce had been broadly poached.

Why the timing creates confusion
The announcements cover overlapping but different stages. AI5 completed tape-out before Samsung’s reported prototype work, so the chip design was ready to be manufactured. Taylor then moved into wafer production and yield checks, with 2027 volume supply as the stated target. Terafab, by contrast, was described in April as a future pilot using a process that Musk acknowledged was still incomplete.
That means a headline claiming that Terafab has already taken over AI5 manufacturing would go beyond the documented timeline. The available evidence supports parallel strategies: Samsung producing early AI5 hardware under contract and Tesla exploring additional internal capacity.

What would verify or disprove the stronger allegations
- A named employee list, hiring data or a direct statement from Samsung or Tesla would be needed to establish the scale of any Taylor-to-Tesla migration.
- A published contract, regulatory filing or on-record negotiation account would be needed to substantiate the alleged AI5 commercial terms.
- Production disclosures showing Terafab’s site, equipment, wafer starts and process qualification would distinguish a funded proposal from an operating fab.
- Updated Samsung or Tesla statements could clarify whether Taylor’s 2027 target covers all AI5 demand or only a defined portion.
Until those details appear, the defensible conclusion is narrower: Samsung’s Taylor fab is progressing toward 2nm AI5 production, Tesla is recruiting Korean semiconductor talent, and Musk has outlined a separate Intel 14A-based Terafab plan. The “a ton” and “shitty terms” phrases remain unverified allegations rather than established facts.
