Futurism reported on October 2, 2026, that Elon Musk posted a reworded version of a joke machine-learning engineer Matt Hardy had made about sandboxing AI agents with Delta Wi-Fi. The report says Musk had reacted to Hardy’s post first. That sequence and the similar wording raise an attribution question, but they do not by themselves prove Musk intended to take credit for Hardy’s joke.
What was the Delta Wi-Fi joke?
Futurism attributes this post to Matt Hardy, a machine-learning engineer and Proof of Human co-founder: “we should just sandbox the [AI] agents by giving them Delta Wifi.” The joke links a technical idea—sandboxing an AI agent, or restricting what it can access—with the expectation that an airline’s in-flight internet will be limited.
What did Musk post, and when?
According to Futurism, Musk replied to Hardy’s post with a laughing emoji on September 30, 2026. The outlet says Musk posted this version a day later: “Best way to sandbox an AI is to put it on a Delta flight – it will have no chance of accessing the Internet!”
The two lines use the same central premise: put an AI agent on a Delta flight to keep it offline. Musk’s wording expands that premise into a punchline about having no internet access. Futurism described it as a light rewording of Hardy’s joke.

Did Musk steal the joke?
“Stole” is Futurism’s editorial framing, not an independently established finding about Musk’s intent. The report’s account of the earlier post, Musk’s reaction, and the later similar post supports asking whether Hardy should have been credited. But textual similarity and sequence alone cannot establish why Musk posted it, whether he believed he was repeating Hardy’s joke, or whether the episode amounts to legal plagiarism.

- The reported jokes share the Delta-flight-and-limited-internet premise, while Musk’s wording differs from Hardy’s.
- The report’s account makes attribution a fair subject for discussion, but does not establish Musk’s motive, a legal conclusion, or a broader pattern across his career.
