Probably some did, but no evidence discussed here identifies a dinosaur with a preserved fleshy-fruit meal. Fossils show that fruits were available in some Cretaceous forests, and large dinosaurs may have helped disperse seeds. Availability and ecological plausibility are not the same as proof of what a particular dinosaur ate.
What does “fruit” mean in this question?
In everyday speech, fruit often means a sweet, fleshy food such as a berry. In plant biology, the term is broader: a fruit is a structure that develops from a flower and contains seeds. Fossils described as fruits or fruiting structures therefore do not necessarily resemble a modern grocery-store fruit, and they do not necessarily indicate a sweet or fleshy meal.

That distinction matters when interpreting dinosaur evidence. A fossil plant can establish that a fruit or seed-bearing structure existed. A dinosaur fossil containing identifiable plant remains can show that an individual swallowed those remains. Neither fact alone tells us that the dinosaur ate the equivalent of a modern berry, that it preferred fruit, or that fruit was a regular part of its diet.

What the Cretaceous fruit fossils establish
A New Mexico forest about 74 million years ago
A fossil forest near Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, preserves a snapshot of plant life from about 74 million years ago. In a report published July 9, 2026, the University of Kansas Biodiversity Institute and Natural History Museum described fruits, seeds, and other plant reproductive structures from the site. The largest fruits reported were about the size of grapes.
This is strong evidence that a diverse range of fruits was present in that particular Cretaceous forest. It is not a fossilized menu: the plant fossils do not show that a dinosaur ate any of those fruits. The report’s co-author, James Saulsbury, proposed that the fruits were likely dispersed by early mammals, large dinosaurs, and other animals. That is an ecological inference about what animals may have done in the forest, not a direct identification of a dinosaur meal.
Seed dispersal and fruit eating are related but distinct ideas. An animal that swallows a fruit and later deposits its seeds could disperse them, but the plant fossils at this site do not preserve that sequence. The inference is plausible in the context of a forest with fruits and animals, but the evidence cited does not identify which animal moved which seed or how often.
Fruit availability was not the same everywhere or at every time
The United States Geological Survey’s educational overview says fruit was available to the last dinosaurs. This supports the limited claim that fruit existed near the end of the dinosaur era. It does not justify projecting fruit availability across every dinosaur group, habitat, or earlier period. The 74-million-year-old New Mexico forest is one place and time, not a stand-in for all dinosaur environments.

Nor does knowing that a plant grew in an area prove that every animal there could or did eat it. Plant fossils, animal fossils, and feeding evidence answer separate questions. A co-occurring fruit fossil establishes local availability; an identifiable dietary remain can support ingestion; evidence of repeated consumption would be needed to argue for a recurring food source.
How scientists determine what dinosaurs ate
Gut contents: evidence of an individual meal
Plant remains preserved within an animal’s body can provide unusually direct evidence. If the remains are genuinely inside the body cavity and can be identified, they show what that individual swallowed during the preserved meal or feeding interval. They do not automatically establish the typical diet of its species, and they do not provide a complete account of the animal’s life.
In 2025, Poropat and colleagues described a cololite associated with Diamantinasaurus matildae from Queensland’s Winton Formation. The specimen is dated in the paper’s abstract to about 101–94 million years ago. Its preserved contents include conifer pinnules, angiosperm leaves, and seed-fern fruiting bodies, alongside chemical biomarkers consistent with gymnosperms and angiosperms.

The listed contents do not include fleshy fruit. Seed-fern fruiting bodies are reproductive plant structures, but their presence does not make this a demonstrated fruit meal. The careful conclusion is that this individual ate varied plant material; this specimen is not direct proof that it ate fruit.

Coprolites: clues in fossilized droppings
Coprolites—fossilized feces—can preserve undigested food remains and provide another direct route to reconstructing diet. Their limits are different from those of gut contents. It can be difficult to determine which animal produced a coprolite, and the contents document what was eaten by that individual rather than a species-wide menu. A coprolite containing a plant fragment is evidence about ingestion only as securely as the identification and attribution allow.
A 2017 study of large Late Cretaceous dinosaur coprolites interpreted their contents as evidence of recurring crustacean consumption and rotted-wood ingestion. That finding is not evidence of fruit eating. It does illustrate why broad labels such as “herbivore” should not be treated as a promise that every meal consisted only of conventional plant foods. Diet can include unexpected items, and individuals may differ.
Teeth, jaws, and feeding mechanics
Teeth and jaw structure help researchers infer what an animal could process. Tooth shape and wear, jaw movement, and likely feeding height can narrow the range of mechanically plausible foods. They are indirect evidence, however: a tooth does not preserve the identity of the last meal.
The Australian Museum describes sauropods as leaf-strippers that lacked grinding back teeth, while hadrosaurs had tooth batteries suited to grinding. Those contrasts help explain why dinosaurs with different feeding equipment may have handled vegetation differently. But even a mouth adapted to process plant material cannot, by itself, show that its owner ate fruit. To make a fruit-specific claim, anatomical clues need to be distinguished from preserved dietary remains.

Comparisons with living animals can also help frame possible feeding behavior. Such comparisons are useful for generating or assessing an interpretation, but they are not direct observations of dinosaur behavior. A modern animal that eats fruit does not prove that a dinosaur with superficially similar anatomy did so.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the dinosaur diet examples do—and do not—show
The Australian Museum’s overview describes seeds and leaves in gut contents from the ankylosaur Minmi, as well as twigs, berries, and tough plants in the stomach region of a hadrosaur. These examples support the idea that some dinosaurs ingested a varied range of plant parts, including reproductive structures and material described as berries.
They do not establish that the berries were fleshy fruits in the modern everyday sense, that the hadrosaur routinely ate them, or that fruit was a dietary staple. “Found in the stomach region” is also a description of location; the strength of the dietary interpretation depends on how confidently the remains can be associated with that animal. The examples are useful evidence of plant consumption, but they should not be stretched into a claim about regular fruit eating.

It records a particular sauropod’s varied plant intake, including leaves and seed-fern fruiting bodies. It is geographically and chronologically distinct from the New Mexico fossil forest, and its contents should not be used to infer what dinosaurs at that forest ate. Together, such examples show why scientists must keep the animal, place, time, and specific preserved food in view rather than combining every plant fossil into one universal dinosaur diet.

How strong is each kind of fruit-eating claim?
| Claim | What would support it | What the evidence discussed here supports |
|---|---|---|
| Fruit existed in a place and time | Identified fossil fruits, seeds, or reproductive structures in a dated deposit | Supported for the New Mexico fossil forest at about 74 million years ago; the USGS also says fruit was available to the last dinosaurs. |
| Dinosaurs could have encountered fruit | Evidence of fruit in an environment where dinosaurs lived | Plausible for the New Mexico forest setting, but encounter does not prove consumption. |
| A dinosaur swallowed a fruit | Identifiable fruit remains preserved as gut contents or in securely attributable coprolites | Not demonstrated by the examples described here. The cited Diamantinasaurus contents do not report fleshy fruit. |
| A named species regularly ate fruit | Repeated, well-attributed dietary evidence that can support a pattern beyond one meal | Not established by the evidence discussed here. |
| Fruit was a staple or nutritionally important | Evidence sufficient to establish regularity and dietary significance | Not established by the evidence discussed here. |
| Dinosaurs dispersed fruit seeds | Direct traces of seed movement or a robust ecological case tied to the animals and plants involved | Proposed as a likely ecological role in the 2026 University of Kansas report, not directly demonstrated for a named dinosaur and fruit. |
The table separates claims that are often blurred together. Evidence can be convincing for plant availability and still be weak for a particular animal’s behavior. Direct evidence also has scope: one well-preserved meal can establish what one individual ate, but additional evidence is needed to describe what a whole species usually ate.
Why the answer remains qualified
Fossilization is selective. A plant structure or stomach content must be preserved, found, and identified before it can contribute to a diet reconstruction. As the Natural History Museum in London explains in its overview of fossil and anatomical approaches, researchers draw on evidence such as coprolites, tooth wear, and comparisons with living animals. Each method answers a different part of the question and carries its own uncertainty.
Direct diet evidence is particularly valuable because it records food remains rather than merely the ability to eat something. But even direct evidence has boundaries: a stomach-region find may be harder to associate securely with a particular animal than a clearly preserved cololite; a coprolite may not have a confident producer; and a single meal is not a lifetime diet. These are not reasons to dismiss the evidence. They are reasons to state exactly what it shows.

The New Mexico report adds an important piece to the ecological picture: fruits were present in a dinosaur-era forest, and large animals could plausibly have helped disperse them. It does not settle whether any named dinosaur ate a particular fruit. The Diamantinasaurus cololite shows that a sauropod ate several kinds of plant material, but it does not supply the missing fleshy-fruit meal. The two lines of evidence are complementary, not interchangeable.
So, did dinosaurs eat fruit?
It is plausible that some dinosaurs ate fruit, especially in environments where fruits were available, and large dinosaurs may have helped disperse seeds. Fossils currently described here establish fruit availability and varied plant eating, but they do not identify a dinosaur with a preserved fleshy-fruit meal. Claims about a particular species, how often it ate fruit, or fruit’s importance in its diet go beyond what these examples demonstrate.
