Not in the way the phrase suggests. CD PROJEKT RED did not document a major Adam Smasher health or damage nerf in the September 2022 Edgerunners Update. The encounter changed through two later stages: Update 2.0 broadly rebalanced the game’s main bosses and enemy AI, while Update 2.1 specifically upgraded Smasher with improved AI and a Sandevistan inspired by his anime appearance. “Major nerf” is therefore a player comparison, not an official, measured patch description.
What changed after Cyberpunk: Edgerunners?
The timeline matters because three different updates are often compressed into one claim.

Patch 1.6: the anime tie-in, not a documented Smasher nerf
Released on September 6, 2022, the Edgerunners Update added secrets, equipment, free downloadable content and Photo Mode features inspired by Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. CD PROJEKT RED’s published notes describe gameplay fixes and improvements, but do not list a reduction to Adam Smasher’s health, damage, defenses or artificial intelligence.

It changed the surrounding game and added Edgerunners-related content, while leaving no published Smasher-specific before-and-after numbers.

Update 2.0: systemic changes to every main boss
On September 21, 2023, Update 2.0 overhauled core systems and made “numerous improvements to enemy AI.” The notes also state that CD PROJEKT RED “rebalanced the base game’s main boss fights.” Enemy reaction time and the way enemies counter Sandevistan were among the AI changes, and main bosses received armor penetration.
Those changes altered the context of the Adam Smasher battle. A rebalance can make an encounter feel easier or harder depending on a character’s build, difficulty setting and equipment, but the official notes do not provide a Smasher-only health, damage or time-to-kill comparison. Calling this a numeric nerf would go beyond the documented evidence.

Update 2.1: the direct Smasher adjustment
In December 2023, Update 2.1 made the clearest Smasher-specific change after the anime’s release. CD PROJEKT RED announced improved AI for the late-game fight and gave Smasher a Sandevistan ability modeled on his appearance in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
This is an upgrade to his behavior and mobility, not a nerf. It is intended to make the boss more dynamic and closer to the character viewers saw on screen.

Why does game Smasher seem weaker than anime Smasher?
The difference is not explained by one published stat reduction. It comes from how the two versions are designed.
| Comparison | Anime portrayal | Game encounter |
|---|---|---|
| AI and mobility | Presented as an overwhelming, relentless combatant with highly aggressive movement. | Earlier versions were widely perceived as more predictable; Update 2.1 improved his AI. |
| Sandevistan | A signature time-dilation ability associated with his Edgerunners appearance. | Added to the boss fight in Update 2.1. |
| Fight structure | Staged for dramatic storytelling and a power gap between Smasher and his opponents. | Built as a playable boss battle with readable attacks, phases and opportunities for different builds. |
| Player context | Characters face a threat written to dominate the scene. | V can arrive with optimized cyberware, weapons, perks and a difficulty setting that substantially changes survivability and damage. |
| Version differences | Fixed animated portrayal. | Behavior depends on whether the game is running the original systems, Update 2.0 or Update 2.1 and later. |
A player who remembers the pre-2.0 or pre-2.1 fight may therefore describe Smasher as “nerfed” relative to the anime, while a player on the current post-2.1 ruleset encounters a more mobile and reactive boss.

Is Adam Smasher harder after Update 2.1?
Update 2.1 makes the fight more dangerous in specific situations because Smasher can use improved AI and Sandevistan behavior. The change does not establish a universal difficulty increase for every player: build strength, game difficulty, armor, cyberware and familiarity with attack patterns still determine the result.

What can be stated confidently is that 2.1 made the encounter more active and more faithful to the anime’s depiction. It did not publish a single difficulty multiplier or a percentage increase that applies to all players.

Which platforms received these changes?
The post-1.6 new-content updates were aimed at PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One did not receive the later new-content updates, so players on those older consoles should not assume that the 2.0 and 2.1 encounter changes are available there.
For a current comparison, first identify the platform and installed patch, then check the game’s update history. Comparing an older console build with a post-2.1 PC or current-generation build can produce apparently contradictory impressions of Smasher’s behavior.
What the official record does—and does not—prove
- Patch 1.6 added Edgerunners-inspired content but does not document a direct Adam Smasher nerf.
- Update 2.0 rebalanced the main boss fights and changed enemy AI systems that affect Smasher.
- Update 2.1 specifically improved Smasher’s AI and added a Sandevistan.
- No official before-and-after figure establishes a percentage change to Smasher’s health, damage or time to defeat.
The most accurate answer to “Did Adam Smasher get a major nerf after Edgerunners?” is therefore: the anime made the game version look underpowered by comparison, Update 2.0 changed the broader boss-fight rules, and Update 2.1 strengthened Smasher directly. “Major nerf” describes a perception of the contrast, not a documented single patch event.
