Yes, but only across a short window. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $134.4 million in net inflows over the first two October 2026 trading sessions, including October 2, the day the September payroll report was released. Bitcoin was reported near $85,000 on October 4 after briefly testing $87,173 on October 2. Those observations show continued buying over two sessions—not proof that ETF demand persisted or that it caused Bitcoin’s price recovery.
What the September jobs report said
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics published its September 2026 Employment Situation on October 2. The establishment survey showed nonfarm payroll employment increased by 29,000. The separate household survey put the unemployment rate at 4.2%.

The report also revised the prior two months: July payroll growth was changed from 21,000 to a decline of 10,000, while August growth was revised from 162,000 to 133,000. Together, the July and August estimates were 60,000 lower than previously reported. The figures describe different surveys and should not be conflated: payroll counts come from the establishment survey; unemployment comes from the household survey. ETF inflows: September versus the first two October sessions
| Period | Reported U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF net flows | What the figure establishes |
|---|---|---|
| September 2026 | $2.65 billion, as reported by The Block citing SoSoValue | A strong monthly net-inflow total; The Block described it as the second-largest monthly inflow since October 2025, below August’s $3.52 billion. |
| October 1, 2026 | $102.7 million, as reported by The Block citing SoSoValue | Positive reported flows on the first October trading session. |
| October 2, 2026 | $31.7 million, as reported by Decrypt | Positive reported flows on the payroll-release day. |
| October 1–2, 2026 | $134.4 million, as reported by Decrypt | Positive flows across the first two October trading sessions—not evidence about later sessions. |
The monthly September total and the two-session October total cover different periods, so they should not be read as like-for-like measures of momentum. The figures indicate that reported net buying continued into the payroll-release day, but the brief October window is not enough to establish a durable trend. What Bitcoin’s price did—and what that does not prove
Decrypt reported that Bitcoin briefly tested $87,173 on Friday, October 2, and traded around $85,000 on Sunday morning, October 4. These are dated reported observations, not a live quote. Positive ETF flows and a price near $85,000 occurred within the same short period, but timing alone does not show that ETF purchases caused the price move or will keep the price there.
A net-flow figure records reported fund activity over a stated period. It does not show that every ETF investor held onto shares, identify why the price changed, or establish that buying will continue. Newhedge’s documentation describes issuer-level flow series and a methodology version, underscoring why flow claims need a provider and measurement period. How much weight to give the recovery narrative
Dominick John, an analyst at Zeus Research, told The Block that ETF inflows suggested institutional demand “has not faded,” pointing to a more sustained recovery. That is an analyst’s interpretation of the flows, not an independently established explanation of Bitcoin’s price action. The available figures do not isolate the effects of payrolls, yields, Federal Reserve expectations, short covering, or ETF activity.

The practical test is whether positive daily net flows continue in subsequent sessions. The reported $134.4 million across October 1 and 2 supports a limited conclusion: buying continued for those two sessions, one of them on payroll-release day. It cannot answer whether demand stayed positive afterward or whether Bitcoin could hold around $85,000.
