That is a finding from the watchdog’s own review—not an independently verified audit, and not proof that Apple intentionally hid coverage.
What MRC says its review found
MRC says it identified 78 potential stories about DNC debt published during the review window. It reports that none appeared in the top 20 stories it sampled. MRC also said 10 of the candidate stories were from outlets it routinely saw in Apple News’ top 20, and that at least 14 came from outlets it described as frequent Apple News features. Those counts are MRC’s, not independently reproduced results. MRC’s report describes its findings.

The distinction matters: the reported count concerns candidate stories and one specific Apple News placement. It does not establish that Apple News never carried DNC-debt coverage in other sections or that users could not find such stories.

MRC says it checked Apple News’ top 20 promoted stories at approximately 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time each day from January 1 through September 28, 2026. It searched using terms including “DNC,” “RNC,” “Democrat,” “Martin,” “Fundraising,” “FEC,” “Debt,” “Deficit,” and “National Committee,” then searched online for stories about DNC debt that might have been promoted. MRC says it confirmed that publishers behind some candidate stories were available on Apple News. Its report outlines the method.
#1 Best Overall
- 4K High Dynamic Range (Dolby Vision and HDR10) for stunning picture quality
- Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
- A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance
- Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
This is a morning snapshot of a top-20 list, combined with an online search for possible stories. It does not show what appeared in every user’s feed, how Apple’s selections changed during the day, or whether coverage appeared in placements outside the top 20. The available account also does not provide a complete selection log or an independent replication. MRC says only Apple can explain why a particular story was not selected.
What the allegation does—and does not—show
MRC frames the result as suppression. The observation it describes is narrower: its candidate list did not match the top-20 stories in the sampled morning checks. That discrepancy alone cannot establish Apple’s motive, prove partisan censorship, or show that the candidate list represents every story Apple could have considered. An allegation that the company intentionally hid reporting goes beyond the method described.

MRC cited outlets it said Apple News frequently featured, including Fox News, ABC News, The Washington Examiner, The Washington Post, The Guardian and Politico. It also noted that Apple News did not feature The New York Times itself, though the platform offered The Athletic, the Times’ sports section. These examples provide context for MRC’s argument; they do not independently verify the full count or establish why individual stories were absent.
What is reported about the DNC’s debt
AOL’s October 6, 2026 report said the DNC entered 2026 with $17.5 million in debt, citing The New York Times. AOL also reported a $15 million loan taken in October 2025 and a previous debt figure of $20.5 million. These are attributed figures: the underlying Federal Election Commission filings were not reviewed for this account. AOL’s report recounts the figures and MRC’s allegation.

MRC separately said the debt had ranged from $15 million to $18 million in recent months and that the loan was secured against DNC headquarters. Those claims are also attributable to MRC; the underlying filings and loan documents are not established by the material described here.

MRC president David Bozell told AOL, “Apple isn’t curating the news,” and described the platform as “a high-tech protection racket for the political left.” He also characterized the review as finding that Apple News suppressed coverage of Democratic fundraising problems while featuring stories damaging to Republicans. These are Bozell’s advocacy statements, not neutral findings established by the sampling method.

Whether that reflects editorial judgment, the limits of MRC’s search and sampling, or another factor cannot be determined from the described evidence.
