Did a Teen Really Tweet From an LG Smart Fridge? What the 2019 Post Shows

In August 2019, a post from an account run by a teenager known as Dorothy appeared on Twitter as if it had been sent from an “LG Smart Refrigerator.” But the label did not prove that a fridge sent it: a researcher told The Guardian the post was manually created, while LG said only that Twitter could be accessed through the browser on select refrigerator models.

What happened with the “LG Smart Refrigerator” tweet?

Dorothy’s posts drew attention after she said her mother had confiscated her electronics. In one post, she wrote: “I do not know if this is going to tweet I am talking to my fridge what the heck my Mom confiscated all of my electronics again.” The post’s source attribution showed “LG Smart Refrigerator,” prompting people to wonder whether she had found a way to get online through the appliance. CBS News reported her explanation, while noting it had not independently confirmed that the post originated on a refrigerator.

Did the tweet really come from a refrigerator?

The available evidence does not establish that it did. The Guardian quoted computer researcher Igor Brigadir, who said, “The LG fridge [tweet] was definitely manually created.” Brigadir based his assessment on the post’s metadata, which differed from the device-origin patterns he observed in Dorothy’s Nintendo posts.

The source label is not conclusive on its own. The Guardian reported that custom apps can be renamed to make a post appear to come from a different device. Its reporting does not establish who changed the label or exactly how the “LG Smart Refrigerator” attribution was produced.

Could an LG refrigerator access Twitter?

LG said that using Twitter on a refrigerator was technically possible on some models. Company spokeswoman Taryn Brucha told the Guardian: “We don’t know if Dorothy actually used an LG smart refrigerator to tweet, but yes – it is possible to access Twitter via the web browser on select LG smart refrigerator models.” That statement describes a capability, not confirmation of the device used for Dorothy’s post.

LG’s January 2017 release about its InstaView refrigerator line described webOS and Wi-Fi-enabled features available on the refrigerator screen. It is historical context for connected LG appliances; it does not identify Dorothy’s refrigerator or show that her tweet came from one.

Was it an LG marketing stunt?

LG denied orchestrating the story. Brucha told the Guardian: “No marketing ploy here! We learned about this in real time with the rest of the world and joined in the fun by tweeting #FreeDorothy – that’s the extent of our involvement!”

What can be concluded?

  • The post appeared in August 2019 amid Dorothy’s account of losing access to her phone and other electronics.
  • The “LG Smart Refrigerator” attribution was not proof of the sending hardware, and Brigadir assessed from the metadata that the post was manually created.
  • LG said select refrigerator models could access Twitter through a web browser, but did not know whether Dorothy used one.
