The result is an association—not evidence that those chemicals caused autism, a way to diagnose an individual child, or proof that changing products can prevent autism.
What did the study find?
The study compared chemical concentrations in donated shed primary teeth from 38 children: 22 children with autism and 16 controls. Researchers identified 60 compounds detected in at least half of the participants. Of those 60, 57 had higher concentrations in the autism group, but only 19 differences were statistically significant. The other 38 were not reported as statistically significant differences.

The study is “A pilot autism case-control study of pesticides and plasticizers in shed baby teeth,” by Lynne P. Heilbrun, Inkyu Han, Anabel Rodriguez, L. Aubree Shay, and David Gimeno Ruiz de Porras. The number 19 refers to compounds whose measured concentrations were statistically significantly higher in the autism group within the set of 60 commonly detected compounds. It does not mean researchers established that 19 chemicals cause autism. Nor does a group-level difference predict an individual child’s exposure, health outcome, or diagnosis.

The University of Texas at San Antonio Health Science Center reports that the researchers measured about 300 chemicals per participant on average. That broader screening count is different from the 60 compounds selected for the group comparison because they appeared in at least half of participants. The university announcement describes the study and its findings.
How did researchers analyze the teeth?
The team analyzed donated shed primary teeth using two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with time-of-flight mass spectrometry, a laboratory method for separating and identifying compounds in a sample. Teeth form over time, so their chemical measurements can be used to study exposure during tooth formation. First author Lynne P. Heilbrun explained in the university release: “Teeth capture cumulative exposures over long periods of time, whereas blood or urine samples only show a specific window of time.”

This is a research method, not an established consumer test for autism or an individual child’s chemical-related health risk. The study does not provide a basis for using tooth analysis to diagnose a child.
Do the findings show that chemicals cause autism?
No. This was a small observational case-control comparison, and it cannot determine whether the measured exposures came before autism or contributed to it. It also cannot rule out the possibility that autism-related differences affected exposures, or that other factors account for the group differences. Larger studies are needed to test whether the pattern holds.

The study’s report classifies 39 of the 60 compounds as known developmental toxicants or endocrine-disrupting compounds. Such a hazard classification describes a potential kind of harm; by itself, it does not show that a child received a harmful dose or experienced an effect. The study’s group comparisons do not establish a harmful dose for any individual participant.
What should parents make of the bottle-related finding?
The university release says five of the nine compounds with the greatest differences were chemicals that can migrate from plastic bottles. That does not show that bottle use caused the measured levels, or that avoiding bottles would change autism risk. The findings do not justify blaming parents, bottle use, food packaging, or personal-care choices for a child’s autism.

ScienceAlert reported that benzyl benzoate concentrations were 722% higher in the autism group than in controls. That figure is ScienceAlert’s account of the study; it is not evidence that benzyl benzoate caused autism or harmed the children. The ScienceAlert report also quotes the study authors as saying that children may be “chronically and repeatedly exposed to a wider range of developmental toxicants than previously identified in short-term exposure studies.” That interpretation concerns exposure measurement, not proof of causation.
What remains uncertain?
The available journal abstract and university announcement establish the study design and headline counts, but do not provide a complete compound list, individual effect estimates, or the full details of statistical adjustments. Those details matter for assessing the strength and interpretation of individual chemical comparisons. The small sample and pilot design make replication in larger studies important.

The result is best understood as an early signal for further research into long-term chemical exposure—not a causal explanation of autism, an individual risk assessment, or a consumer prevention strategy.
