The Diadora Nucleo 2 is a neutral daily trainer that independent reviewers describe as stable, secure and firm. They also call it heavy and low on rebound, which makes it a better fit for easy and recovery miles than for racing or fast sessions. Its real drop is also higher than Diadora’s listed 5 mm. This review draws on Diadora’s product pages and on published findings from RTINGS, RunRepeat and Doctors of Running. It is not based on our own wear testing.
Who the Nucleo 2 is for
Diadora positions the standard Nucleo 2 as a neutral shoe for daily training and longer runs. Its own product copy says: “If you are looking for a neutral shoe and are familiar with a low drop, Nucleo is the choice for you.” That is manufacturer positioning, not an independent conclusion. RunRepeat and Doctors of Running both also class it as a neutral daily trainer.

The independent evidence points to a specific runner. This is someone who wants a planted, secure shoe for steady mileage and easy days, and who doesn’t need a lively toe-off.

- ANIMA midsole
- Special Duratech 5000 wear-resistant compound across the entire foot area
| Version | Intended use | Notes from Diadora |
|---|---|---|
| Nucleo 2 (standard) | Road, daily training and longer runs | Listed weight varies by regional page and size: 280 g / 9.8 oz (US men’s 10, ±3%) on one men’s page, 275 g on another regional listing |
| Nucleo 2 Wide | Runners who need more room | Offered for wider feet; Diadora’s pages don’t give a separate weight in the material reviewed |
| Nucleo 2 GR | Gravel roads, grass, clay and light trails | Reinforced, breathable upper and a tread aimed at mixed surfaces; 320 g / 11.3 oz (±3%) on the US page, with that page’s size reference |
Official specifications
- Upper: nylon air mesh and microfiber (as listed on the GR page; other pages show the same broad component set).
- Midsole: Anima foam.
- Insole: removable DDattivo insole.
- Outsole: Duratech 5000.
- Stated drop: 5 mm.
- Stated stack: 35 mm heel and 30 mm forefoot on one men’s page.
Diadora also makes technology claims, including “30% more midsole responsiveness” and a “20%” lower midsole weight. These are manufacturer claims, and no independent validation of them was found. RTINGS’ low-rebound finding sits uneasily beside the responsiveness claim.
The drop is not really 5 mm
This is the most useful correction for buyers. Diadora lists a 5 mm drop. RTINGS measured 8.1 mm heel-to-toe in its 2026 review. RunRepeat’s lab measurement, on a review page labelled 2025, was 8.0 mm against the 5.0 mm official figure. Two independent sources land at about 8 mm. The two numbers are separate claims, one stated and one measured, so treat the shoe as a moderate-drop trainer rather than a low-drop one. If you are moving from a higher-drop shoe, that is a gentler change than the spec sheet implies. If you were buying specifically for a true 5 mm, it is worth knowing before you buy.
Rank #2
- Surface: Road, Track, Trail Running Upper: Nylon Air Mesh and microfiber Insole: DDATTIVO (Removable) Midsole: ANIMA Outsole: Special Duratech 5000 wear-resistant compound across the entire foot area Drop: 5 mm
RTINGS also measured a 38.9 mm heel stack. That is taller than the 35 mm Diadora lists, though the two may not measure at the same point.

Ride, stability and pace
RTINGS, which reviewed the shoe on August 20, 2026 and updated its page on September 17, 2026, describes it as secure and stable underfoot with a firm ride. It also says the shoe feels heavy and has low rebound. RTINGS recommends it for easy and recovery runs rather than racing.
Rank #3
- Surface: Road, Track, Trail Running Upper: Nylon Air Mesh and microfiber Insole: DDATTIVO (Removable) Midsole: ANIMA Outsole: Special Duratech 5000 wear-resistant compound across the entire foot area Drop: 5 mm
That fits the rest of the picture. A stable platform and a firm feel suit long, steady, unhurried running. They are less suited to tempo work or race days, where you want the shoe to give energy back.
Weight
RTINGS weighed its sample at 283.8 g (10.01 oz). That is close to Diadora’s 280 g figure for the standard shoe at US men’s 10, so the standard version appears to match its claim. The GR is heavier at 320 g. Weight depends on version and size, so don’t carry one figure across all of them.
Rank #4
- Surface: Road, Track, Trail Running Upper: Nylon Air Mesh and microfiber Insole: DDATTIVO (Removable) Midsole: ANIMA Outsole: Special Duratech 5000 wear-resistant compound across the entire foot area Drop: 5 mm
Fit and width
The material reviewed gives no detailed independent verdict on sizing, toe-box volume or heel lock. The Doctors of Running coverage available discusses the Anima midsole but offers too little detail to support fit claims. What is established is that a Wide version exists. Reviewer impressions can’t substitute for trying your own size and width, so if standard width feels narrow in the forefoot, try the Wide before moving up a size. The removable DDattivo insole also leaves room to swap in a different insole if you need one. Check that the replacement fits before relying on it.

Standard Nucleo 2 or GR?
- Mostly roads and paths: the standard shoe is lighter and is the version the road-test findings above describe.
- Mixed gravel, grass or clay: the GR’s tread and reinforced upper are built for this, at about 40 g more weight.
- Wide forefoot: look at the Wide version first.
Limits of this review
No controlled head-to-head comparison against other brands’ trainers was found, so this review makes no claim that the Nucleo 2 beats or loses to any specific rival. Prices and stock vary by retailer and region and are not covered here.

The Bottom Line
The Nucleo 2 suits runners who want a stable, firm, neutral shoe for daily and easy mileage and who are fine with some weight. It is a poor choice if you want a lively shoe for racing or fast sessions, or a true 5 mm drop. Try your own size, and the Wide version if your forefoot is broad.
