Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred is most appealing if you want the story to continue, want to play the Spiritborn, or are looking for more places and activities in the game. Its value is less obvious if you mainly want Diablo IV’s progression and system changes: Blizzard said many launch updates were available to all players, not just expansion owners. The expansion requires the Diablo IV base game.
What Vessel of Hatred adds to Diablo 4
Blizzard lists the expansion’s owner features as the Nahantu region and its dungeons, strongholds, side quests, Legion events and monster families; the Spiritborn class; the expansion campaign; Nahantu Renown; Runewords; the Dark Citadel; Mercenaries; Kurast Undercity; and trading for expansion-specific resources. Blizzard’s launch guide distinguishes these from system updates it said were available to all Diablo IV players.

That distinction matters when weighing the pros and cons: judge the expansion by the campaign, class, region, and activities it adds—not by every change that arrived around its launch.

The main story continues
Vessel of Hatred follows the base-game campaign and sends the player into Nahantu after Neyrelle. Blizzard recommends completing the base campaign first for the full experience. A new character can skip directly to the expansion campaign, but that option does not establish that the same story context will be preserved.

Spiritborn offers a new class to build around
Spiritborn is a new Diablo IV class associated with four Spirit Guardians: Jaguar, Gorilla, Eagle, and Centipede. Blizzard describes it as focused on close-range combat and highlights the glaive as its favored weapon. If trying a new class is your main reason to return, Spiritborn is a concrete expansion-specific draw. Blizzard’s Spiritborn announcement outlines the class’s theme and Guardians.
Nahantu adds a new region and activities
The expansion gives players a new region to explore, with its own dungeons, strongholds, side quests, Legion events, monster families, and Renown. This is a straightforward reason to consider it if you want more places to explore within Diablo IV.

Its activities support different play styles
Mercenaries give solo players a companion option, while the Dark Citadel is presented as a cooperative PvE challenge. Kurast Undercity offers a timed, multi-stage run that can be shaped toward particular rewards using Tributes; higher-quality Tributes also raise the challenge. These are distinct formats, though feature descriptions alone do not show how enjoyable or rewarding they are in practice. Blizzard’s feature overview describes these activities and their mechanics.

Reasons to hesitate
You need Diablo IV to play
Vessel of Hatred is an expansion, not a standalone game. Blizzard says the expansion campaign requires a purchase of Vessel of Hatred, and its later Lord of Hatred announcement states that Vessel of Hatred requires the Diablo IV base game. The Lord of Hatred announcement also describes packages that include Vessel of Hatred, but it does not establish present storefront availability or the best current purchase route.

Some launch changes are not expansion-exclusive
Blizzard said the launch also brought a new level cap and difficulty system, Paragon changes, an item-quality rework, additional character slots, class skills and passives, Party Finder, and seasonal content and rewards available to all players. Those changes should not be counted as reasons to buy Vessel of Hatred on their own.
The available feature descriptions do not settle quality or value
Blizzard’s announcements explain what the expansion includes, but do not establish whether its campaign is compelling, its activities stay fresh, how it performs, or whether its price is worthwhile. Those judgments require current independent reviews or clearly attributed firsthand reporting.

How to decide whether it fits you
| Your main reason to play | How Vessel of Hatred addresses it |
|---|---|
| Continue the story | The expansion includes the next campaign chapter, following the base-game story. |
| Try a new class | Spiritborn is included with the expansion. |
| Explore more of the world | Nahantu adds a region with its own activities and Renown. |
| Get help while playing solo | Mercenaries can join a solo player as companions. |
| Play cooperative or timed endgame activities | The Dark Citadel is presented as a co-op challenge; Kurast Undercity is a timed, multi-stage activity. |
| Get the launch-era system changes | Blizzard said many progression, difficulty, itemization, class, and Party Finder updates were available to all players. |
For newcomers, consider the story sequence: Blizzard recommends finishing the base campaign first, while allowing a new character to skip to the expansion campaign. For a purchase decision, check the live store for current regional terms and package contents rather than relying on an older announcement. Blizzard’s 2026 announcement gave April 28, 2026 as Lord of Hatred’s availability date and listed packages that include Vessel of Hatred, but its pre-purchase wording does not confirm today’s storefront status.
