Blizzard’s October 14, 2026 patch prevents the trigger, but it does not repair a character whose quest state is already affected. For that character, Blizzard’s documented recovery is to create a new seasonal character in the same partition, complete the Seasonal questline, and then use the unlocked Prime Evil Powers on every character in that partition.
The same procedure applies whether the partition is Normal or Hardcore and whether it is Normal or Solo Self-Found (SSF). If your quest stalled without the Splinter trigger, use the lower-risk checks in this guide and check Blizzard’s service notices before treating the problem as corrupted quest data.

The known Season 15 progression bug
The documented blocker occurs when a character uses a Splinter of a Prime Evil before the Seasonal questline is complete. That sequence can leave the questline unable to finish and prevent access to Prime Evil Powers. Blizzard identified the problem in its October 14, 2026 notes for Diablo IV 3.2.3, Build #73883.

This is a quest-state problem, not an objective that becomes available through extra farming. Killing more monsters, repeating the same activity, or abandoning and reacquiring the quest does not address the trigger described in the patch notes. First determine whether your character used a Splinter early; that single detail decides which recovery path is appropriate.

What the patch changes
- Version 3.2.3, Build #73883, blocks the premature Splinter use that caused the new progression failures.
- The change is preventative. A character already left in the affected state is not reset by installing the patch.
- Blizzard’s supported workaround is completion of the Seasonal questline on a new character in the same partition.
- When that questline is completed, Prime Evil Powers become available to every character in that partition.
Choose the correct path

Step 1: update and verify the installed build
Do this before creating another character. The patch that prevents new occurrences is Diablo IV 3.2.3, Build #73883, released in Blizzard’s October 14, 2026 notes. A later build also includes the fix, so the requirement is “3.2.3 Build #73883 or newer,” not an exact rollback to that build.
- Close Diablo IV completely rather than leaving it suspended in the background.
- Open the launcher or console update screen you normally use and run its update or check-for-updates command.
- Wait for the download and installation to finish. If the launcher offers a repair or scan option after an interrupted update, let that verification finish before starting the game.
- At the game’s title or login screen, confirm that the displayed version is 3.2.3, Build #73883, or later. If the build is older, do not test the quest yet; update first.
- Sign in again and load the intended seasonal character. Keep the partition details visible in your notes in case the next steps are required.
Updating protects characters that have not hit the trigger. It cannot retroactively rewrite an affected character’s quest state, so an already-stuck character may still need the same-partition workaround below.
Step 2: establish whether the Splinter trigger occurred
Look at the character’s history, not just the current objective marker. The relevant question is whether this character used a Splinter of a Prime Evil before the Seasonal questline was complete. The timing matters: using the item after the questline has finished is not the sequence Blizzard identified as the blocker.

Signs that match the documented bug
- The character consumed or otherwise used a Splinter of a Prime Evil while the Seasonal questline still had unfinished steps.
- The questline then stopped accepting progress, would not complete an objective, or failed to grant access to Prime Evil Powers after the expected step.
- The problem remains after updating to 3.2.3 or a later build.
Do not keep repeating an objective solely because its marker remains on the map. Once the trigger and symptom match, move to the recovery procedure instead of spending time on additional farming.
Step 3: recover an affected partition with a new character
Blizzard’s workaround is partition-specific. Create the replacement character in the same Normal/Hardcore category and the same Normal/SSF category as the affected character. A character in a different partition does not satisfy the wording of the workaround.
- Write down the affected character’s partition before leaving the game. Record both dimensions: Normal or Hardcore, and Normal or SSF.
- From the seasonal character-creation screen, choose the matching partition. For example, a Normal, non-SSF character requires a new character in Normal, non-SSF; a Hardcore SSF character requires Hardcore SSF.
- Create the new seasonal character in that exact partition. You are not trying to repair the original character by deleting it, and deletion is not part of Blizzard’s instructions.
- Enter the game with the new character and follow the Seasonal questline from its beginning.
- Complete every Seasonal questline step without using a Splinter of a Prime Evil before the line is complete. The patch should prevent the premature trigger, but following the intended order avoids introducing another uncertain state.
- After the questline completes, check the account’s seasonal progression with a character in the same partition and confirm that Prime Evil Powers are available.
The important outcome is partition-wide access, not a transfer of the original character’s individual quest step. Blizzard says that completing the questline on the new character unlocks Prime Evil Powers for every character in that partition, including the character that was previously affected.

Why the partition match matters
Normal and Hardcore are separate gameplay partitions, and Normal and SSF are separate progression contexts. Treat each combination as its own bucket. If the affected character is Normal SSF, a new Normal non-SSF character is not the same partition; likewise, Hardcore and Normal should not be mixed when following the workaround.

If your symptom does not match the Splinter trigger
Not every stalled marker is the documented Season 15 bug. If you never used a Splinter of a Prime Evil before finishing the Seasonal questline, use these checks before creating a replacement character. They are low-risk troubleshooting steps, not a Blizzard-guaranteed reset procedure.
Restart the session cleanly
- Leave the current game and return to the title or login screen.
- Exit Diablo IV completely. On a console, close the application rather than leaving it suspended; on a PC, also close the launcher if it is holding a failed update session.
- Start the game again, confirm the current build, and load the intended seasonal character.
- Open the quest journal and select the Seasonal questline entry again before traveling to the objective.
A clean session can clear a temporary display or synchronization mismatch. It does not change the documented Splinter-trigger diagnosis.

Confirm character and partition selection
Season 15 can present several characters with similar names or roles. Verify that you are loading the character whose quest is stalled and that its partition is the one you intended. If you created or selected an SSF character by mistake, a quest state from a non-SSF character will not appear there.
Retry without a party when state looks inconsistent
If the objective behaves differently when another player is present, leave the party and attempt the step alone after restarting. This is a diagnostic test for a party-state mismatch, not an official cure for the Splinter bug. Record whether the objective completes solo and whether the marker, journal text, and reward all change.

- The full quest name and the precise step that remains incomplete.
- Whether a Splinter of a Prime Evil was used before the Seasonal questline ended.
- Character name, platform, Normal or Hardcore status, and Normal or SSF status.
- The installed Diablo IV version and build number.
- Whether the failure occurs solo, in a party, after a relog, or after a full restart.
- What the quest journal says immediately before and after the failed attempt.
These details make a Blizzard Support report actionable and help separate a reproducible quest-state issue from a temporary session problem.

Blizzard documented a separate login delay on September 15, 2026 and followed it with a hotfix. A login outage can prevent a character from loading or make progression appear unavailable, but it is not evidence that the Season 15 Splinter bug occurred.
- Check Blizzard’s current service notices before deleting, recreating, or substantially changing a character.
- Compare the notice’s date and symptoms with your own: a broad login delay affecting many players points to service availability, while one character failing after early Splinter use points to the documented quest blocker.
- After a service incident is marked resolved, restart the game and retest the original character before escalating.
If other players can log in normally and only one character remains stuck after the Splinter sequence, use the same-partition recovery rather than waiting for an outage hotfix.
Common approaches that do not solve this specific state
- Repeatedly farming the objective: the blocker is the quest state created by premature Splinter use, not a low drop rate or an objective that needs extra kills.
- Only installing the patch: 3.2.3 prevents new occurrences; it does not rewrite an already affected character.
- Creating a character in another partition: the documented unlock is tied to the same Normal/Hardcore and Normal/SSF partition.
- Deleting the affected character: deletion is not part of Blizzard’s workaround and can remove a character you may still want to keep.
- Assuming every delay is an outage: the September 15 login incident was separate from the quest progression bug.
- Using third-party utilities or hardware: a quest-state flag is held by the game service; controllers, repair utilities, merchandise, or a physical game copy do not perform the documented recovery.
When to contact Blizzard Support
Contact support when the character does not match the Splinter trigger, the same-partition completion does not unlock Prime Evil Powers, or the game reports an error that survives a restart and a current-build check. Include the evidence collected above rather than sending only “quest stuck.”

State clearly whether you followed the official workaround: identify the affected partition, identify the new character’s matching partition, and say whether the new character completed the entire Seasonal questline. Mention the date of the attempt and the build number shown at login. If a service notice was active, include its date and whether the symptom affected multiple characters.
