India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has prohibited the MOBIKINS MK-PB-04 power bank from being carried or transported on any flight to, from or within India. The ban covers passenger cabin baggage, checked baggage and cargo, and follows a reported fire involving the model on an IndiGo service.
What the DGCA order prohibits
The restriction is model-specific. Anyone travelling on a flight covered by the order must not bring a MOBIKINS MK-PB-04 on board or place it in freight. The wording reported by The Times of India covers “passenger baggage (including checked-in and cabin baggage)” as well as cargo, so moving the power bank from a carry-on to a suitcase does not make it acceptable.

Contemporaneous reporting says a power-bank fire occurred on an IndiGo flight travelling from Delhi to Chennai on 11 October 2026. The aircraft diverted to Hyderabad after the incident. The subsequent DGCA direction named the MOBIKINS MK-PB-04.

The regulator’s rationale, quoted by The Times of India, refers to “the recent fire incident involving the MOBIKINS MK-PB-04 power bank” and “the potential safety risks associated with it.” Published reports do not establish a failure rate, fire temperature, casualty figure or a wider defect affecting every unit. Those details should not be assumed from the prohibition alone.
Is India banning all power banks?
No. The DGCA action reported in September 2026 bans one identified model. Other power banks remain subject to ordinary dangerous-goods, airline and airport rules. A different model is not automatically approved simply because it has another brand or capacity: passengers must check the operating carrier’s latest instructions and the applicable route rules.

Can any power bank go in checked luggage?
Do not treat a checked suitcase as a safe workaround. Spare lithium batteries and power banks are commonly controlled as dangerous goods, and the operating airline may require them in the cabin rather than the hold. The exact allowance can vary by carrier, itinerary and local implementation. Check the airline’s baggage page before travelling, and follow any instruction about keeping the device accessible or out of an overhead bin.

Can I charge my phone with a power bank on a flight?
India’s DGCA separately advised airlines, in a Dangerous Goods Advisory Circular dated 11 November 2025, to prohibit using power banks to charge portable electronic devices during flight. This no-use direction is broader than the MK-PB-04 ban: it concerns using power banks in the aircraft, not just carrying the named model.
ICAO’s 2026 specifications, effective 27 March 2026, limit passengers to two power banks and prohibit recharging them during flight. Airlines can apply stricter procedures, so follow the crew’s instructions even if your device appears to meet the general quantity limit.

What passengers should do before an India flight
- Identify the model: Read the label on the power bank and confirm it is not the MOBIKINS MK-PB-04.
- Check the operating airline: Review the current restricted-items and spare-battery page for every carrier on a connecting itinerary.
- Pack permitted units correctly: Keep allowed spare lithium batteries in the cabin when the airline requires it, and do not place them in checked baggage against that instruction.
- Limit quantity: Prepare for the ICAO limit of two power banks per passenger, while allowing for stricter airline limits.
- Inspect condition: Do not travel with a swollen, cracked, leaking or heat-damaged battery; ask the airline how it should be disposed of.

India’s dangerous-goods framework is tied to the International Civil Aviation Organization’s Technical Instructions through the Aircraft (Carriage of Dangerous Goods) Rules, 2026. The model-specific DGCA order, the no-use advisory and ICAO’s passenger specifications address different risks: the first removes one identified product from the transport system, while the latter controls how permitted power banks are carried and handled.
As of the October 2026 reports, no published source establishes that every MOBIKINS unit or every power bank is defective. The practical rule is narrower and clearer: never carry the MK-PB-04 on an India flight, and treat all other power banks as conditional items subject to the latest airline and regulatory instructions.
