Battery and kit-content confusion
The most important buying caveat is the mismatch between the product name and the included-items sections. The CEE page for DCMAS5713X1-QW specifies a 9Ah capacity, while both that listing’s included-items area and the UK DCMAS5713X1-GB page describe one 3.0Ah battery, a DCB118 charger and the grass-trimmer head. Those statements cannot safely be merged into one universal package description.
A 9Ah FLEXVOLT battery and a 3.0Ah battery represent materially different work sessions and replacement costs. They also change the tool’s balance and total weight. Before ordering, check the exact regional suffix, the “included in box” panel, the battery part number and the manual supplied with the seller’s package. Save a screenshot or copy of that specification if the listing is likely to change.
DeWALT’s “up to 60 minutes” runtime statement is associated with a 9Ah battery. It should be read as a maximum under unspecified conditions, not as a guaranteed mowing time. Tall wet grass, thick weeds, a wider cutting path, frequent stops, line advancement and the selected speed all reduce the time available. One owner reviewing the tool through ITS.co.uk reported roughly 45 minutes of heavy work while still having charge remaining, but that is a single personal account rather than a controlled test.
The 75-minute charging figure is likewise a published specification. If your kit really contains a 3.0Ah battery, its practical session length will not match a 9Ah configuration even though the power head is the same. A second compatible battery may be more useful than trying to make one pack cover a large property, but verify the correct battery and charging guidance for your regional model.

These heads are additional purchases, not evidence that every DCMAS5713X1 box contains them. Compatibility should be checked against the exact regional power-head variant, because suffixes can identify different market packages. Do not assume that a third-party attachment will lock into the shaft, transmit power correctly or remain within the manufacturer’s safety approvals.
The split shaft has a practical storage advantage: the tool occupies less length in a vehicle or shed when separated. The trade-off is another coupling point to assemble and keep clean. Inspect the connector, locking mechanism and drive interface each time the shaft is changed; a head that is not fully seated can create vibration, poor power transfer or a safety hazard.
Cutting setup and expected performance
The 38 cm swath is a sensible middle ground for general grass and weed work. DeWALT’s CEE page lists 2 mm line, while the UK page calls for 2.4 mm twisted line. Those are not interchangeable assumptions. A line that is too thick can overload the head or motor; one that is too thin may wear rapidly in rough vegetation. Use the diameter and winding instructions in the manual supplied with your exact tool.

Available owner comments consistently describe strong power, but they also describe weight as a recurring compromise. An ITS.co.uk customer said the trimmer and a separately purchased brush-cutter head delivered superb cutting power, while another said power and battery life were good but the complete tool was quite heavy. A ProductReview.com.au account found the brush-cutter capability useful, yet said thick, tall grass took longer and consumed more battery and line. These reports support a use-case judgment, not a laboratory performance score.

DeWALT lists 5.4 kg for the tool without a battery and 6.173 kg with a battery in the CEE specification. CHOICE’s public listing shows 7.3 kg, but it does not expose the configuration or measurement method behind that figure. The difference means you should not compare a bare-tool number with a fully equipped competitor without checking what each manufacturer weighed.
In practical use, the battery sits at the rear while the cutting head and shaft extend forward. That creates leverage even when the scale weight appears acceptable. A harness can transfer part of the load to your body, but fit is personal: one owner reported that the supplied harness did not fit well. Adjust the harness, handle position and shaft length before judging the tool, and stop if your wrists, shoulders or lower back begin compensating for poor balance.
Edging is the task most likely to expose the tool’s handling limits. A long split-boom tool is convenient for open grass and clearing, but it is less nimble than a short dedicated edger around tight corners. Keep the head parallel to the surface, use the lower speed for precise work and avoid forcing the line into hard edging. If your property is dominated by narrow borders, frequent vertical edging and small patches, the modular system’s flexibility may not offset its reach and weight.
How to assemble and use it safely
- Confirm the package: Match the full model suffix, battery capacity, charger and included head against the seller’s box contents before opening the kit.
- Charge the battery: Use the supplied DCB118 charger or the charger specified for your battery. Allow the pack to finish charging and cool as directed in the manual.
- Join the split shaft: Align the shaft sections and fully engage the locking mechanism. Do not operate the tool if the sections can twist or pull apart.
- Fit the trimmer head: Install the supplied guard, handle and head exactly as shown in the regional manual. Check that fasteners are tight and the line is wound evenly.
- Fit the battery: Slide the charged pack into the power head until it latches. Keep the trigger released while making this connection.
- Prepare the area: Remove stones, wire, glass, toys and other objects that could be thrown by the line. Keep people and pets outside the debris zone.
- Select a speed: Start on the lower setting for light grass and edging. Move to the higher setting only when the vegetation requires it, because load and speed affect runtime.
- Trim with controlled sweeps: Hold the head at the correct angle, advance gradually and let the line do the cutting. Do not use the shaft as a lever against fences, kerbs or trees.
- Advance line deliberately: Use the bump-feed action on a clear, suitable surface. If line releases unexpectedly after an impact, stop, remove the battery and inspect the head.
- Stop before changing anything: Remove the battery before changing attachments, clearing wrapped grass, servicing the head or transporting the tool.
These steps do not replace the safety instructions for your regional model. The manual controls when its instructions differ from a general operating sequence.

Look elsewhere for maximum lightness

Check the battery before relying on runtime
