A DeWALT 20V MAX battery that will not charge is usually responding to one of four conditions: it is not fully seated, the pack is outside the charger’s safe temperature range, the charger is reporting a pack or charger fault, or one component has failed. Start by unplugging the charger, inspecting both components, reseating the battery until it clicks, and reading the LED pattern for your exact charger model. Then cross-test the battery and charger one at a time. Do not bypass the pack’s protection or try to force current into it.
What the charger symptom usually means
LED behavior is useful, but it is not universal across every DeWALT charger. A normal charging indication on one model may use a different blink sequence on another. Treat the following as a first decision guide, then verify the exact pattern in the manual for the model printed on your charger.

Start with complete seating and a physical inspection
Seat the pack until it clicks
DeWALT states that the battery must be fully seated and clicked into a DCB118 charger before the charging sequence begins. A pack can look inserted while sitting slightly tilted, resting on debris, or failing to engage the latch. In that position the charger may show no useful response even when the cells are still usable.

- Look into the charger slot and around the battery rails. Remove loose, dry debris without pushing anything into the contacts.
- Slide the pack straight into the charger until the latch engages and you hear or feel a click. Do not hold it down by hand while testing.
- Reconnect the charger to the correct household supply and watch for the model’s charging indication.
Never continue if the casing is cracked, swollen, leaking, scorched, wet, or unusually hot. A damaged cord, plug, charger housing, or battery terminal is also a reason to stop and use service support rather than attempting a workaround.

Let a hot or cold pack recover naturally
Temperature protection can look like a dead battery or a defective charger. DeWALT’s published guidance says a hot pack can shut down above 70°C. The charger may delay charging or a reset procedure until the internal pack temperature falls below 60°C. These are internal thresholds, not temperatures you should try to measure by opening the battery.
What to do during a hot/cold delay
- Remove the pack from the tool and charger.
- Place it on a dry, nonflammable surface at normal room temperature.
- Wait until it no longer feels hot or cold, then retry charging.
- Do not put the pack in a freezer, refrigerator, water, or direct heat, and do not use compressed air or other forced-cooling methods.
A pack used heavily can need time before the charger will accept it. If the hot/cold indication clears and normal charging begins, the pause was protective rather than proof of a failed pack. If the indication persists after the battery has returned to room temperature, proceed to cross-testing instead of repeatedly inserting and removing it.
Use the charger’s exact LED pattern, not a generic chart
DeWALT chargers distinguish normal charging, full charge, hot/cold delay, and problem-pack or problem-charger states. The blink colors and timing depend on the charger model. Read the model number on the charger body and use that model’s current instruction manual; do not assume a pattern documented for another charger applies to yours.

On compatible models, a red charging indication means the charger is actively charging. Leave the pack in place and allow the sequence to finish. If the indication stops immediately, changes to a fault pattern, or appears with a pack that was just used in extreme conditions, remove the pack, allow temperature recovery, and test again.

Red and yellow or hot/cold indication
This indicates a temperature delay on chargers that use that combination. The charger is withholding charging until the pack reaches a safe range. Waiting is the correct response; forcing contact, bridging terminals, or moving the pack directly from a hot vehicle into a cold environment can create additional risk.
Immediate full indication
A full indication that appears as soon as an apparently depleted pack is inserted should be treated as a possible pack, charger, or communication fault. It is not enough evidence by itself to declare the battery bad. Cross-test the components and follow the exact manual’s instructions for the observed pattern.
No light at all
First verify that the outlet works, the charger plug is fully inserted, and the cord has no cuts or crushed sections. Confirm that the battery is clicked into place. If the charger remains dark with a known-good compatible battery, the charger or its power path is suspect. If the charger works with another battery but not the original, the original pack needs service evaluation.

Follow this safe troubleshooting sequence
Work through the checks in order so that you change only one variable at a time. That makes the result meaningful and avoids unnecessary stress on the pack.

- Disconnect everything. Remove the battery and unplug the charger before inspecting either component.
- Inspect for unsafe damage. Check the battery casing, rails, contacts, charger slot, cord, plug, and housing for cracks, liquid, scorching, swelling, leakage, or heavy debris. Stop if any damage is present.
- Confirm the supply. Plug the charger into a suitable household outlet and ensure the connection is firm. If the outlet is controlled by a switch or protected by a tripped breaker, correct that condition first.
- Reseat the battery. Slide it into the charger until it clicks. A tilted pack or an obstructed slot may prevent the charging sequence from starting.
- Read the model-specific LED sequence. Compare what you see with the manual for that exact charger. Record whether the indication is charging, full, hot/cold, problem-pack, or absent.
- Allow temperature recovery. If the pack was hot from heavy use or exposed to cold, remove it and let it return to room temperature. DeWALT documents shutdown above 70°C and charging or reset only after the internal temperature drops below 60°C.
- Cross-test one component. Try the suspect battery on a known-good compatible DeWALT charger, or try a known-good compatible battery on the suspect charger. Perform one test at a time and note the LED result.
- Stop when the evidence points to service. If the charger refuses to light, repeatedly reports a problem, or the pack remains unusable after cooling and reseating, stop experimenting and contact DeWALT support or an authorized service center.
Cross-test to separate a bad battery from a bad charger
Cross-testing is the most useful practical diagnosis because it changes one part while keeping the other constant. The result below is a diagnostic inference, not a DeWALT laboratory test.

Use only packs and chargers that the charger documentation identifies as compatible. The DCB118 is specified for DeWALT 20V MAX and FLEXVOLT batteries and provides LED status indication, so it can be used as a comparison charger only when it is available in safe working condition and the pack is an approved match.
When the battery itself is likely at fault
A battery becomes the leading suspect when it fails on a known-good compatible charger while another battery charges normally on that same charger. A persistent problem-pack indication, an immediate full indication on a depleted pack, or visible swelling, leakage, scorching, or terminal damage also warrants removing it from service.

Do not open the housing to inspect individual cells. The pack’s protection and monitoring circuits are part of its safety system, and bypassing them can create fire, shock, or thermal hazards. Do not connect the pack directly to another battery, apply an improvised voltage source, or short the terminals to “wake it up.” Those actions can damage the pack and defeat the charger’s safeguards.

If the pack is still under warranty or service coverage, keep the model and date information available when contacting DeWALT. An authorized technician can determine whether repair, replacement, or disposal is appropriate without requiring you to dismantle the pack.

The charger is more likely to be defective when it shows no light with a known-good battery, rejects several compatible packs with the same fault indication, has a damaged cord or plug, or has visible scorching or cracks. Verify the outlet before reaching that conclusion; a dead outlet or loose connection can mimic charger failure.
Do not substitute an unapproved charger merely because its connector fits. DeWALT’s DCB1112 instruction manual explicitly says, “DO NOT attempt to charge the battery pack with any chargers other than a DEWALT charger.” Use a compatible DeWALT model and follow its manual’s LED definitions. If a charger becomes unusually hot, emits an odor, makes abnormal sounds, or repeatedly trips a protective device, unplug it and arrange service.

Replacement choices and what their specifications mean
Replacement makes sense only after seating, temperature, supply, and cross-testing have identified the failed component. Choose by compatibility and the capability you actually need, not by an unfamiliar LED pattern.

Capacity in ampere-hours describes the battery’s stored-charge rating; it is not a promise that every tool will run for a particular number of minutes. Charger output describes the charger’s rating, not a guarantee that every pack will charge at that rate under all temperature and protection conditions.
Service, warranty, and safe disposal route
Use DeWALT’s support resources for the exact manual, warranty information, repair and spare-parts options, service-agent lookup, and safety notices. Have the charger model, battery model, the LED sequence, and the results of your cross-test ready. Those details help support staff distinguish a seating or temperature event from a component fault.
- Keep a damaged or swollen pack away from tools, chargers, metal objects, and combustible materials.
- Do not mail or transport a visibly damaged lithium battery without following the carrier and manufacturer’s instructions.
- Do not place a battery or charger in household recycling unless local rules specifically allow it.
- If the equipment is safe but simply no longer serviceable, ask an authorized service location about the correct return or recycling process.
Preventing repeat charging failures
- Insert the pack straight and confirm the latch clicks every time.
- Keep charger slots and battery rails dry and free of loose debris.
- After demanding use, let a hot pack cool naturally before charging.
- Store packs and chargers where they will not be exposed to water, direct heat, or crushing forces.
- Use only approved DeWALT chargers for the battery family involved.
- When a fault appears, record the LED pattern and test one variable at a time instead of repeatedly cycling the pack.
Bottom line: the fastest reliable fix
Unplug the charger, inspect for damage, reseat the battery until it clicks, and let a hot or cold pack return to room temperature. Read the exact charger model’s LED pattern, then cross-test the battery and charger with known-good compatible equipment. If the fault follows the battery, remove the pack from service; if it follows the charger, stop using the charger. Never open, jump, bypass, or force-charge a damaged or rejected pack—use DeWALT support or an authorized service center.
