The Boardman SLR 9.8 Carbon has steep-climb-friendly gearing on paper, but the available evidence does not establish that it was independently tested on the Devil’s Staircase. T3’s October 2026 feature is labelled “Advertorial”; its accessible excerpt promotes the bike and gives the climb a 25% peak gradient. The Dragon Ride 2026 guide reports a 29% maximum. Those are separate publisher figures, not a verified result from a ride test.
What is established about the Devil’s Staircase?
The Dragon Ride 2026 climb guide, credited to Simon Warren, describes the Devil’s Staircase in Abergwesyn, Powys, as a 1,300 m climb with 151 m of height gain. It lists a 12.5% average gradient, a 29% maximum, an approximate climb time of eight minutes and a 10/10 rating in the event context. These are guide figures, not measurements made in a Boardman bike test. See the Dragon Ride climb guide.

T3’s accessible October 2026 advertorial excerpt instead calls the peak gradient 25%. The sources do not explain the difference or establish that they used the same measurement method, so neither figure should be presented as a universally settled maximum. T3’s page is labelled “Advertorial,” and the excerpt does not provide a detailed ride account, test method or evidence that the SLR 9.8 was ridden up the climb. Its title and promotional language are not proof of an independent hands-on test. See T3’s feature.
What gearing does the SLR 9.8 have for a steep climb?
Boardman’s current UK listing specifies a 46/33-tooth chainset and a 10–33-tooth SRAM Force cassette for the SLR 9.8 Carbon. The smallest listed combination is 33 teeth at the front and 33 at the rear, a 1:1 ratio. That gives useful context for a steep road climb, but gearing alone cannot establish how the bike performs: rider fitness, pacing, cadence, fit and road conditions all matter. Boardman lists these specifications on its SLR 9.8 Carbon product page.

- MIPS EVOLVE CORE — All Giro helmets are designed to reduce as much energy as possible while meeting and exceeding stringent safety standards. The goal of Giro's Mips Evolve Core-equipped helmets is to reduce rotational forces while enhancing fit and comfort by combining the Mips slip plane with the helmet's adjustable fit system. Giro believes that helmets equipped with this technology can reduce the amount of rotational force that may be transferred to rider's brain in certain impacts.
- IN-MOLD CONSTRUCTION — In-Mold Construction fuses a tough polycarbonate outer shell with the helmet's impact-absorbing foam liner. The fusion process allows for better ventilation systems, making in-mold helmets lighter and cooler than traditional helmets.
- ROC LOC SPORT FIT SYSTEM — The Roc Loc Sport fit system offers easy one-handed operation with a 7cm adjustment range. Its confident clicking feel and sound lets riders know that the helmet is adjusting to a comfortable fit. With comfort similar to Roc Loc 5 and ponytail compatibility, the new Roc Loc Sport fit system brings premium function to sport level helmets.
- DEEP INTERNAL CHANNELING — Combined with the massive vents, internal channeling forces air to flow over the scalp, providing remarkable cooling power.
What else is on the current SLR 9.8 specification?
Boardman lists a C10 carbon frame, SRAM Red AXS E1 12-speed rear derailleur, shifters and hydraulic brakes, Zipp 404 Firecrest carbon tubeless wheels, and Goodyear Eagle F1 R 700 x 30 mm tubeless-ready tyres. The maker gives an approximate weight of 8.0 kg. These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent measurements or results from the Devil’s Staircase.
The same listing includes hidden mudguard mounts, three bottle-boss mounting points, a two-position aero seatpost and a Universal Derailleur Hanger. Boardman says post-2018 models, including the SLR range, carry a full lifetime warranty for the original owner; check its current warranty terms for eligibility and conditions. Does the evidence show that the bike conquers Wales’ toughest climb?
No verified climb result is established by the available material. The component list can help a rider assess whether the gearing, tyres and equipment suit their needs, but it cannot substitute for a documented ride, comparison or test method. An older Boardman-hosted review concerns an earlier SLR 9.8 Disc generation; it is historical context, not evidence about the current SLR 9.8 Carbon or its performance on this route. See Boardman’s hosted review archive.

What should riders check before attempting the climb?
Use the route guide’s figures as event-guide context, then account for the actual road surface and conditions on the day. Warren’s guide says its climb ratings combine gradient, length, likely hostility of riding conditions and surface condition. The excerpted riding tip ends mid-sentence, so it does not provide a complete instruction to follow. Make equipment decisions from the exact bike setup: the broader SLR range is described as having clearance up to 36 mm tyres (32 mm with mudguards), but that does not mean the 9.8 is fitted with 36 mm tyres or that every tyre and wheel combination will clear. Verify the specific frame and setup before changing tyres.
