In a small sample reported by Listwright, all 22 external links in DEV article bodies appeared in anonymously fetched page HTML, while only 3 of 47 comments containing one external link appeared. Those figures concern different parts of the site; they do not show that DEV generally suppresses linked comments or establish why any comment was missing.
What the 22/22 and 3/47 figures mean
The counts come from a DEV Community post by Listwright, reporting checks made on September 21 and 22, 2026. The author says they examined 537 comments across 19 articles, comparing the public comment tree with article pages fetched without cookies or a session. The post reports that all 22 external links in article bodies appeared in the anonymous HTML, while 3 of 47 comments with one link to an external destination appeared there. Read the post on DEV.

These are not two measurements of the same thing: 22/22 counts external links in article bodies, whereas 3/47 counts comments that each contained one external link. A link’s presence in the fetched HTML also does not establish whether every logged-out reader sees the same page response.
How comment visibility differed by link category
For comments, the post gives these rendering counts from its 537-comment sample. “Rendered” means the comment’s anchor appeared in the anonymously fetched article HTML, according to the author’s method.

| Comment link category | Rendered in anonymous HTML |
|---|---|
| No outbound link | 194 of 490 |
| One link to DEV | 21 of 84 |
| One link to an external destination | 3 of 47 |
| Two or more links | 0 of 16 |
Every count in the table is reported by Listwright’s post, not independently verified. The pattern shows lower anonymous rendering in the linked-comment categories in this sample. It cannot establish that links caused the difference, that the groups were otherwise comparable, or that the result is a DEV-wide rule.
What the author checked—and what remains uncertain
Listwright says the comparison was also made using top-level comments and by considering comment length. The post additionally describes two comments from the same account in one thread—one with a Stripe link and one without—that had different anonymous visibility. These are author-reported checks and an example, not a controlled experiment or independent replication.

The post quotes a notice it says appeared on the affected pages: “Some comments may only be visible to logged-in visitors. Sign in to view all comments.” Listwright reports seeing it on all 19 articles where comments were missing and on none of the pages rendered in full. The wording and counts are attributable to the post; they do not independently confirm that the notice is universal or still current.
The post does not establish DEV’s mechanism for deciding what appears in anonymous HTML, nor whether the pattern applies beyond these articles and this measurement window. A comment absent from one anonymous page response should therefore be described as missing from that response, not as deleted or definitively suppressed.

How to check your own article
Listwright describes comparing the public comment tree with an anonymously fetched article page. The process requires the article ID and checks for each comment’s anchor in the returned HTML:
- Fetch the article page without cookies or a logged-in session and save or inspect its HTML.
- Request the public comment tree at
/api/comments?a_id=<your article id>. - For each comment in the tree, look for its
/comment/<id_code>anchor in the article HTML. - If a comment is in the tree but its anchor is absent from that response, record it as not rendered in that anonymous fetch. This method checks the response HTML; it does not explain why the comment is absent.
This is the comparison method described in the post, not an official DEV diagnostic or proof of a platform policy.

Practical takeaway for authors
For people sharing a paid offering, Listwright recommends putting the URL in the article or profile and using a comment to explain why a reader might want to visit. That is the author’s practical advice, not a guarantee that article or profile links will always be visible.
