Susan Glass-Smith and her attorney say racial slurs were used; prosecutors have reportedly filed two misdemeanors against an 18-year-old woman related to leaving the crash scene, while a separate warrant request involving a 20-year-old man was denied for insufficient evidence. The allegations of threats and slurs have not been established as findings of guilt, and further charging decisions remain unresolved.
What happened after the Detroit crash?
Local reports place the collision near Paul Drive and the Southfield Freeway service drive in Detroit on September 12, 2026. WXYZ reported that Detroit police said an 18-year-old Arab American driver ran a red light and struck Glass-Smith’s vehicle. The reporting available as of September 30 did not establish the final findings of the police investigation. WXYZ’s account
Glass-Smith says that after the collision, people gathered around her car, opened its doors, took her purse and removed her license plate. She and her attorney, Johnny Hawkins, allege that people used racial slurs and threatened her. Hawkins says a bat was used to threaten her. These are attributed accounts and allegations, not adjudicated facts. WXYZ also reported that witness Mohamad Sallam said he did not know the people alleged to have yelled slurs, and that visitors had gathered at his home after his brother died. WXYZ’s report
Glass-Smith estimated that 20 to 30 men surrounded her car, according to WXYZ and FOX 2. That is her estimate of the crowd, not an independently verified count. FOX 2’s report

What charges have been reported?
As of September 30, 2026, WDIV and FOX 2 reported that prosecutors charged an 18-year-old woman with two misdemeanors related to leaving the crash scene. They also reported that prosecutors denied a warrant request for a 20-year-old Detroit man over an incident after the collision, saying there was insufficient evidence to prove a crime. Further investigation was expected. WDIV’s report · FOX 2’s report
The reports reviewed did not say that a hate-crime charge had been filed. Hawkins has urged prosecutors to pursue hate-crime charges and hold more people accountable; his request reflects his position on his client’s allegations, not a formal prosecutorial classification or charge. The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office said: “When the police complete the investigation and submit the warrant request, we will make a charging decision based solely upon the facts and the law.” FOX 2’s report
