Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For identifying an unknown typeface from an image, Illustrator’s Retype and Photoshop’s Match Font can suggest visually similar fonts. Figma’s cited font tools do a different job: they make fonts installed on your computer available inside Figma, but do not identify a font from image pixels. In all cases, treat a visual match as a candidate to verify, not proof of an exact match.
Which design tool should you use?
| Tool | What you give it | What it does | Selection and availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Illustrator Retype | A raster image or outlined text | Detects text regions and suggests visually close fonts | Attempts automatic detection; you can draw a marquee if needed. Suggestions can include Adobe Fonts and fonts on the device, with filters. |
| Photoshop Match Font | A selected region of text in an image | Suggests similar fonts | You select the text with the Rectangular Marquee tool. The dialog can hide Adobe Fonts suggestions to show locally available fonts. |
| Figma font installer | Fonts installed on your computer | Makes those fonts available to use in Figma | It does not identify type from an image. Browser users need the installer for additional fonts; the desktop app includes it. |
The practical choice is straightforward: use Retype or Match Font when you have an image containing unknown lettering. Use Figma’s installer when the font is already installed but missing from Figma’s font list.
Identify lettering in Illustrator with Retype
Illustrator’s Retype is the most automated of these documented image-based workflows. It can analyze raster images and outlined text, detect text regions, and show matching-font suggestions ordered by visual closeness. Adobe’s help page for Retype was last updated October 27, 2025.
- Select the source. Select the raster image containing the lettering, or select the outlined text.
- Open Retype. Use Window > Retype. Depending on your workspace, you can also access Retype from the Type menu, the right-click menu, or Quick Actions in the Properties panel.
- Choose Find Matching Fonts. Retype marks detected text with dotted outlines and shows suggestions for the highlighted region.
- Inspect the suggestions. The panel shows 10 matching fonts by default, ordered by closeness. Choose to request five more if none of the initial suggestions is suitable.
- Refine if necessary. If the lettering was not detected, draw a marquee around the text. Adobe says marquee selection works best for horizontally aligned text set in a single font.
- Adjust the font sources or script. Retype provides Roman or Japanese script selection and filters for including or excluding Adobe Fonts and fonts on your device.
- Apply a candidate. If the match is an Adobe Font, you can add it to Illustrator from the panel. Then compare it against the original lettering before treating it as the answer.
How to improve the selection
Retype needs a legible sample of the characters you want to match. Select the relevant text region rather than unrelated graphics or neighboring lettering. When automatic detection groups several elements together, use the marquee to isolate the target line or word. For the documented marquee workflow, horizontal alignment and one font per selection are the favorable conditions; mixed-font or rotated text may require narrower selections or manual comparison.

Retype searches Adobe Fonts and a local font library. Its suggestions are ranked by visual closeness, not by certainty that the original font has been recovered. For context, Adobe’s Illustrator product page describes Adobe Fonts as including “more than 30,000” typefaces, but the page does not show a publication year for that figure, so it should not be read as a dated or independently verified count.
Find a similar font in Photoshop
Photoshop Match Font is a selection-first workflow: you identify the lettering in the image, then ask Photoshop for similar fonts. Adobe’s help page for Match Font was last updated February 23, 2026.
- Open the image in Photoshop and choose the Rectangular Marquee tool.
- Drag a selection around the text whose typeface you want to investigate.
- Choose Type > Match Font.
- Review the similar-font suggestions in the Match Font dialog.
- If you want to restrict results to fonts already available locally, configure the dialog to hide Adobe Fonts suggestions.
- Select the closest candidate and compare it with the source. If it is not convincingly close, adjust the selected region and run the match again.
Unlike Retype’s automatic region detection, Photoshop’s documented process begins with a region selected by you. Keep the selection focused on the lettering you care about so the sample is not diluted by background details or other text. A result is still a similarity suggestion: the closest item in the list may not be the exact original typeface.

Use fonts in Figma—and understand what it cannot identify
Figma’s font installer, also called FigmaAgent, runs in the background and detects fonts installed on the computer so they can be used inside Figma. That is font availability, not image-based font recognition: the cited Figma documentation does not describe a tool that examines a screenshot and names the typeface in it.

- Figma in a browser: Install the font installer to use additional fonts installed on your computer. The installer runs in the background.
- Figma desktop app: The installer is included.
- ChromeOS and Linux: Figma’s cited documentation says additional fonts are not supported on these platforms. Users are limited to Google fonts and the available Apple fonts noted in that documentation.
Using Adobe Fonts in Figma
- Add the desired font to your computer through Adobe Fonts.
- For browser-based Figma, make sure the font installer is installed as well.
- If the font does not appear, restart Adobe and Figma apps or reload the browser after installing it.
- For shared files, make sure collaborators have the same font and the same font version installed. Otherwise, the design may not render consistently for everyone.
Installing or activating a font can resolve a missing-font problem in Figma, but it will not reveal which font was used in an image. For that question, use an image-matching workflow such as Retype or Match Font, then install or activate the selected candidate in the app where you need it.
How to judge a suggested match
Neither workflow proves that a candidate is the exact typeface. Illustrator orders suggestions by visual closeness; Photoshop presents similar fonts and directs users to select the closest. A sensible verification pass is to compare the candidate with the source at the same scale, paying attention to distinctive letterforms rather than only the overall impression.

- Compare several characters, especially distinctive shapes and terminals, rather than deciding from one common letter.
- Check the weight and width as well as the basic letter design. A close family member or a different weight can look plausible at first glance.
- Look at spacing in context. Kerning, tracking, distortion, and image scaling can make a correct family appear different—or make another family seem closer.
- If the source has been stretched, warped, outlined, or heavily compressed, regard the shortlist as less conclusive and compare candidates manually.
- When the source is a logo or custom lettering, the original may be modified or drawn rather than set in an unaltered retail font. A close suggestion may therefore be the best available match without being the source.
The last checks are practical visual-comparison guidance, not a guarantee about what either app can infer. The documented output from both Adobe tools is a match or similarity suggestion.
Capture a web-page sample when the lettering is online
If the text you want to inspect appears on a website, first capture the relevant page or region as an image, then use an image-based font workflow. A screenshot API can provide that source image; it does not identify the typeface. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It can return a screenshot or PDF, but it is not a font-recognition tool.

Retype detects the wrong region—or no region
Make sure the image or outlined text is selected, then open Retype and choose Find Matching Fonts. If automatic detection misses the lettering, draw a marquee around it. Keep the selection to horizontally aligned text in one font where possible; that is the condition Adobe identifies as working best for marquee selection.
The closest font still looks wrong
Try a tighter selection around the target lettering, inspect the additional five suggestions, and check that the relevant font sources and script are enabled. Compare candidates at the source’s scale and account for weight, width, spacing, and any image distortion. A similarity result is not confirmation of the original font.
Photoshop offers candidates but not the font you expected
Recheck the Rectangular Marquee selection and run Type > Match Font again. If you want only fonts already available on the computer, hide Adobe Fonts suggestions in the dialog. If you need an Adobe Fonts candidate, do not filter that source out.

A font is missing in Figma
In a browser, confirm that the font installer is installed; the desktop app includes it. After adding a font through Adobe Fonts, restart Adobe and Figma apps or reload the browser. For a shared file, check that collaborators installed the same font version. Additional fonts are not supported on ChromeOS or Linux according to Figma’s cited documentation.
A shared design looks different on another computer
Check font availability and version on each collaborator’s machine. Figma notes that collaborators need the same font and font version installed. A matching name alone may not be enough if the installed versions differ.
Which workflow fits your task?
- Unknown type in a raster image or outlined lettering: start with Illustrator Retype if you have Illustrator; it can detect regions automatically and accepts a manual marquee.
- Unknown type in an image you are editing in Photoshop: select the text with the Rectangular Marquee tool and run Match Font.
- A known font is absent from Figma: set up the font installer or activate the font through Adobe Fonts, as appropriate to your platform.
- Need a screenshot of a web page as input: capture the page first, then use Illustrator or Photoshop for font suggestions. A screenshot service supplies the image; it does not replace font matching.
