Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The best Destiny 2 settings are the ones your PC can hold in the game’s hardest activity, not the ones that produce the highest number in an easy area. Start at your monitor’s native resolution, choose a frame cap your system can sustain, keep textures high when your VRAM allows, and lower foliage distance, ambient occlusion and shadows before sacrificing render resolution. A Field of View (FOV) near 90–95 balances peripheral awareness with readable targets. Disable Motion Blur for clearer Crucible fights. On compatible NVIDIA graphics cards, leave Reflex enabled; use Boost only when you accept higher GPU power use for potentially slightly lower latency.
Check that your PC has a supported baseline
Destiny 2’s settings cannot compensate for an unsupported operating system or hardware that is already below the game’s floor. Bungie lists Windows 10 64-bit, 6 GB of system memory and a graphics card around the GeForce GTX 660 or GTX 1050 class as minimum requirements. Its recommended baseline is 8 GB of RAM and graphics performance around a GeForce GTX 970 or GTX 1060 class. These are entry points, not guarantees of a particular frame rate: your processor, driver, resolution, background applications and the activity on screen all affect frame time.

Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 support ended on June 4, 2024. If you are still using one of those versions, upgrade to a supported 64-bit Windows installation before spending time tuning graphics options. Close browsers, recording tools and other heavy applications while testing so that a memory or CPU spike is not mistaken for a graphics-setting problem.
Choose a stable target before changing graphics options
Decide what “smooth” means for your monitor and your PC. A high refresh display does not require an equally high cap if your system cannot maintain it in raids, public events or busy Crucible encounters. A lower cap that the computer holds consistently usually feels better than a peak number followed by repeated drops.

- Change one setting at a time and retest the same type of scene.
Do not treat any universal FPS figure as a promise. NVIDIA’s published measurements were made in a specific test scene, so use their gains as directional evidence. Your CPU, GPU, resolution, driver and activity can change both the size and the location of a bottleneck.
Use this tuning order
The order below protects image clarity first, then removes settings that commonly consume GPU time. It also makes each change easy to evaluate.
1. Keep the monitor and render output sensible
Use the display’s native resolution and begin with the game’s normal render scale. An image rendered below native resolution can look soft even when the frame counter is high. If your PC is already meeting its target, do not lower resolution merely to create a larger headline number.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →2. Preserve texture quality when VRAM permits
Texture quality controls surface detail rather than the number of objects drawn. Keep it at High or Highest when your graphics memory can accommodate it. NVIDIA measured approximately 2.6 GB of VRAM usage at 1920×1080 with maximum settings and recommends at least 3 GB for highest textures at 1080p. That figure is a measurement from its test conditions, not a universal allocation limit; other applications, higher resolutions and later content can require more.
3. Set FOV around 90–95 as a starting point
FOV is both a visibility and a performance decision. Raising it shows more peripheral space, which can help you notice a flanker, but it also makes objects at the center of the screen appear smaller. NVIDIA measured a saving of about 2.4 FPS when changing FOV from 105 to 95 in its scene. Start near 90–95, then raise it only if the additional peripheral view is worth the smaller central targets for you.

4. Lower Foliage Detail Distance before image resolution
When frames dip outdoors, change Foliage Detail Distance from High to Medium. NVIDIA measured approximately 4.1 FPS recovered by making that change, with much of the gameplay-critical detail preserved. The option mainly affects how far foliage remains at its highest detail, so it is a safer first reduction than making the entire image blurry.
5. Select HDAO for ambient occlusion when GPU-limited
Ambient occlusion adds contact shading around surfaces and objects. If the GPU is the limiting component, choose HDAO rather than the more expensive ambient-occlusion option. NVIDIA measured about 5.4 FPS recovered in its test scene. Look for overly flat contact shadows after changing it; if the visual difference is unacceptable, restore the higher option and reduce another effect instead.

6. Use High shadow quality rather than the highest setting
Shadow quality can be expensive in scenes with many lights and geometry. NVIDIA measured approximately 4.1 FPS recovered when moving from the highest shadow setting to High, with little perceived gameplay loss in the tested scene. Keep shadows higher if their extra definition matters to you, but this is a useful compromise when frame time is unstable.
7. Disable Motion Blur for competitive readability
Turn Motion Blur off if you play Crucible or want clearer movement during rapid camera turns. NVIDIA reports no performance impact from this switch, so it is a visibility preference, not an FPS fix. Disabling it can make enemies and incoming attacks easier to distinguish without consuming the performance budget you need elsewhere.
8. Adjust Render Resolution last
Render resolution is a direct performance lever and a direct clarity lever. Raising it sharpens the image and reduces aliasing, but costs GPU time; lowering it can recover performance at the cost of softness. Make this the final change after foliage, ambient occlusion and shadows. If you must lower it, reduce it in small steps and stop as soon as the target becomes stable.

What the measured changes mean in practice
The following figures come from NVIDIA’s 2017 GeForce guide and one test scene. They show relative leverage, not guaranteed gains on every PC.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Change | Measured result | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| FOV 105 to 95 | About 2.4 FPS recovered | Trim a little GPU load while keeping a broad view | Less peripheral space and larger central targets |
| Foliage Detail Distance High to Medium | About 4.1 FPS recovered | Outdoor frame-time dips | Nearby and distant vegetation changes detail sooner |
| Higher ambient occlusion to HDAO | About 5.4 FPS recovered | GPU-limited scenes | Less expensive contact shading |
| Highest shadows to High | About 4.1 FPS recovered | Unstable frame times around complex lighting | Lower shadow detail |
| Five measured changes together | About 20 FPS in NVIDIA’s scene | Illustrates cumulative leverage | Not a promise for another system or activity |
Because the tests are scene-specific, avoid adding the numbers together as a forecast for your machine. Use them to prioritize testing: foliage, ambient occlusion and shadows generally offer more performance per visible compromise than immediately reducing render resolution.
Balance visibility for Crucible and other activities
There is no single competitive FOV that suits every player. A wider view helps you monitor the edges of the screen and react to threats entering from the side. The cost is that opponents at the center occupy fewer pixels, which can make distant head-level detail harder to read. A value around 90–95 is a practical starting point because it avoids the extreme target shrinkage of very high FOV while retaining useful peripheral context.
Keep textures high when possible because texture detail contributes to recognizing surfaces, armor and environmental cues. If you need performance, reduce the heavier distance, shading and shadow options first. Motion Blur should remain off for a clean view during strafes, turns and ability effects. After every change, test at the ranges where you actually lose fights; a setting that looks fine in a quiet patrol area may fail in a six-player engagement.
Configure NVIDIA Reflex and understand Boost
On compatible NVIDIA systems, Destiny 2 supports the NVIDIA Reflex SDK, and Reflex is enabled by default. Reflex coordinates CPU and GPU work to reduce the queue of rendered frames, which can improve input responsiveness when the GPU is busy.

| CVARS value | Behavior | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Reflex off | Only for troubleshooting or deliberate testing; disabling it can increase latency. |
| 1 | Low Latency | Normal Reflex operation for compatible hardware. |
| 2 | Low Latency with Boost | Use when you want the most aggressive latency behavior and accept higher GPU power draw. |
Boost overrides GPU power-saving behavior so the graphics card can remain at a higher performance state. It may reduce latency slightly, but it can increase power consumption, heat and fan noise. If your system already holds the target smoothly and temperatures or noise matter, the default Low Latency mode is the sensible baseline. If responsiveness is your priority and cooling is adequate, test Boost in the same demanding activity rather than assuming it will improve every system.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reset corrupted settings with CVARS.xml
A bad custom value can cause graphics glitches, input problems or an unstable launch. Reset the configuration instead of guessing which line is responsible.
- Exit Destiny 2 completely.
- Open
C:UsersUSER_NAMEAppdataRoamingBungieDestinyPCprefs. - Delete
CVARS.xml. - Launch Destiny 2 again and allow it to create a fresh file with default values.
- Reapply settings gradually, testing after each major change.
Replace USER_NAME with your Windows account name. Deleting the file removes the custom CVARS configuration, so record any deliberate changes before resetting. Bungie’s CVARS guide also documents that a cap value of 0 means the default 200 FPS limit. That is a configuration default, not a recommendation that every PC should target 200 FPS.
Troubleshoot drops by identifying the type of limit
GPU-limited behavior
If reducing resolution or render scale immediately improves frame rate, the graphics card is likely saturated. Restore textures first if VRAM allows, then lower foliage distance, ambient occlusion and shadows in that order. Keep Motion Blur off for visibility, since it does not provide a performance gain.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCPU- or activity-limited behavior
If lowering resolution barely changes the result, the processor, simulation load or a particular activity may be limiting performance. Keep the resolution and textures that preserve clarity, and use a cap below the worst observed frame rate. A stable cap prevents the system from repeatedly chasing a peak it cannot sustain.
Best Value
Stutter after changing several options
Return to a known state, change one option, and repeat the same route or encounter. If the game behaves abnormally after a custom CVARS edit, use the documented file reset rather than stacking more changes. Check temperatures and background programs before blaming a single graphics setting.
Compare presets using four useful axes
When deciding between two configurations, compare more than the average FPS number:
- Sustained frame time: how stable performance remains in your hardest activity, not an empty destination.
- Resolution and render scale: whether the image remains sharp enough for your monitor and viewing distance.
- Peripheral awareness versus target size: the FOV trade-off that affects positioning and aim.
- Responsiveness versus power draw: Reflex mode, Boost behavior, temperatures and fan noise.
A preset that wins on an uncapped peak but produces frequent dips is usually worse for aiming and movement than one with a lower, steady cap. Keep a short note of the cap, resolution, FOV and the three heavy effects you changed; that makes later driver or game updates easier to diagnose.
Three practical starting profiles
Clarity-first
- Native monitor resolution.
- High or Highest textures, provided VRAM is sufficient.
- FOV 90–95.
- High shadows, with foliage and ambient occlusion reduced only if necessary.
- Motion Blur off.
- Reflex Low Latency on compatible NVIDIA hardware.
This profile protects detail and is appropriate when the PC already meets its target.
Balanced competitive
- Native resolution with a cap the PC can sustain in busy Crucible matches.
- High textures.
- FOV around 90–95.
- Foliage Detail Distance Medium, HDAO ambient occlusion and High shadows.
- Motion Blur off.
- Test Reflex Boost only if extra power use and heat are acceptable.
This is the sensible first profile for most systems that experience occasional dips but do not need a large resolution reduction.
Performance-first
- Keep native resolution initially, then lower render resolution in small steps only if heavy effects are not enough.
- Retain textures until VRAM pressure or stutter shows that they must be reduced.
- FOV near 90.
- Medium foliage distance, HDAO and High shadows.
- Motion Blur off.
- Use a conservative cap rather than chasing the maximum possible FPS.
This profile prioritizes consistent frame time while preserving as much image detail as the GPU budget permits.
Quick Recap
Final checklist
- Windows 10 64-bit or newer supported Windows version is installed.
- Your system meets at least 6 GB RAM and GTX 660/GTX 1050-class minimum guidance; 8 GB RAM and GTX 970/GTX 1060-class graphics are the recommended baseline.
- Native resolution and a sustainable cap are selected.
- Textures remain High or Highest when VRAM permits.
- FOV is tested around 90–95 rather than set solely for a large number.
- Foliage, ambient occlusion and shadows are reduced before render resolution.
- Motion Blur is off when competitive readability matters.
- Reflex remains enabled on compatible NVIDIA hardware, with Boost chosen only after considering power and heat.
- CVARS.xml is reset if a custom configuration causes instability.
