But the September 17 announcement gives no return date or first-wave list, while Bungie’s current store is reported to be retiring on October 19, 2026. Those are separate developments: one is a game-content commitment; the other is a reported change to merchandise access.
What Bungie means by bringing Destiny 2 back
In its September 17, 2026 statement, Bungie said it is beginning work to bring vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids back into the game for all players. The studio described Destiny as foundational to its future, with Studio Head Poria Torkan and Head of Product and Marathon General Manager Josh Deane writing, “All of this is to say, we are not done with Destiny.”

This is a commitment to restoration work, not a launch announcement or a dated relaunch. Bungie did not name which vaulted content will return first or provide a schedule. It said changes made to the game since Beyond Light mean the team needs to update lighting, encounters, combatants, and other systems so restored content meets current stability and gameplay standards. Bungie said it would share more details in the months ahead.
Is Destiny 2 shutting down?
No. Bungie Help says Destiny 2 remains playable after Update 9.7.0, which launched June 9, 2026. That update, titled Monument of Triumph, was announced as the final planned live-service content update. Bungie says it is not planning further content updates, while leaving open the possibility of hotfixes for game health and stability. See the Monument of Triumph and Update 9.7.0 Support Guide.
#1 Best Overall
- From the makers of the acclaimed hit game Destiny, comes the much-anticipated sequel
- An action shooter that takes you on an epic journey across the solar system
- Humanity’s last safe city has fallen to an overwhelming invasion force, led by Ghaul, the imposing commander of the brutal Red Legion
- To defeat the Red Legion and confront Ghaul, you must reunite humanity’s scattered heroes, stand together, and fight back to reclaim our home
The distinction matters: the game staying playable does not mean it will receive a continuing schedule of new live-service content. The September restoration statement adds a new commitment to work on vaulted material, but it does not replace the June update’s status or promise regular releases.
What is known about the Bungie Store retirement
A Reddit post dated October 3, 2026 reports that Bungie announced on social media that its current storefront will retire on October 19. The original social post was not available in the material supporting this report, so the closure claim should be treated as reported rather than independently confirmed here. Bungie’s store home page and policies do list October 19, 2026 at 9:59 a.m. Pacific Time as the end of current sale and retired-rewards windows, but those deadlines alone do not establish that every Bungie merchandise channel will end.

- Online only and requires a PlayStation Plus membership.
- An incredible story set within a newly-imagined, always-connected universe filled with action and adventure.
- Create your character, forge your legend by defeating powerful foes, and earn unique and customizable weapons, gear, and vehicles.
- Unprecedented variety of FPS gameplay that redefines the genre and breaks traditional conventions of story, cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes.
No successor shop or authorized retailer has been confirmed in the available statements. That leaves post-retirement access to official merchandise unresolved; do not assume that a current listing on another retailer is an official replacement or a Bungie Reward.

Store deadlines and regional limits
| Offer or access detail | What Bungie lists |
|---|---|
| Retired-rewards restock | Eligible players can access a limited restock through October 19, 2026 at 9:59 a.m. Pacific Time, while supplies last, according to Bungie Store policies. |
| Bungie Store x Bungie Foundation sale | Listed for September 28 through October 19, 2026 at 9:59 a.m. Pacific Time. Bungie says 50% of discounted sales proceeds before tax, shipping, and fees go to the foundation. |
| US storefront shipping | Bungie’s shipping page says the US storefront can no longer sell or ship orders to the EU or UK because of VAT regulation changes. This restriction is specific to that storefront; it does not establish the rules for another merchant or future channel. |
For the listed offers, the deadline is a cutoff, not a guarantee that a particular item is in stock. Check the relevant live product and policy pages before ordering.

What happened to the Monument of Triumph shirt?
Bungie’s June 4, 2026 This Week in Destiny described a physical Monument of Triumph shirt tied to the Immortal Title. To qualify, players had to complete the title by September 30 at 9:59 p.m. Pacific Time and order the shirt by October 2 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time; Bungie corrected an earlier October 31 order date. Those windows have passed. The same post announced a Sparrow Racing League jacket drop planned for later in June, but it does not establish current availability or stock after the reported storefront transition.

What players and shoppers should do now
- If you are waiting for vaulted content: treat the September statement as a real restoration commitment, but wait for Bungie to name the first returning content and its schedule.
- If you are deciding whether to buy from the current store: check the live item listing and deadline, and remember that the retired-rewards restock is limited and while supplies last.
- If you are in the EU or UK: the US storefront’s stated shipping restriction applies; do not assume it describes every regional store or a future retailer.
- If you want official merchandise after October 19: wait for Bungie to identify any replacement storefront or authorized seller rather than treating an unrelated third-party listing as an official channel.
