Skyborne is clearly prominent in the World of Warcraft Forever beta, but calling it one of the beta’s most popular races goes beyond the available evidence. A GamesRadar reporter said a “huge chunk” of the players seen during personal beta sessions were using Skyborne. That is a visibility observation, not an audited share of all beta characters. The race is also unusually contentious because access starts with a $29.99/€29.99 purchase while the wider game is available through a World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time.
What the $29.99 Skyborne purchase unlocks
The lowest listed purchase that unlocks Skyborne is the Skyborne Heroic Pack, priced at $29.99 in the United States and €29.99 in the euro region, according to Wowhead’s 2026 pack details. It unlocks the race and its Zephras Isle starting experience. The base World of Warcraft Forever game still requires an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time.

The Heroic Pack also lists early name reservation, cosmetics, the Cerulean Prideclaw mount, Shen’dorei cosmetics, a toy, housing décor and an invite code. Those extras are bundled with the race purchase; they do not change the separate subscription or Game Time requirement for the game itself.

Higher-priced editions change beta access
The Skyborne Epic Pack adds beta access beginning September 17, 2026, plus 30 days of Game Time beginning November 4. The Warcraft Forever Collection includes the Epic Pack benefits along with Warcraft III: Reforged and additional content. The Heroic Pack is therefore the lowest listed route to the race, but it is not the pack that provides the earliest beta entry.

When the beta and launch occur
Blizzard’s listed launch date for Forever is November 4, 2026. The beta window runs from September 17 through October 21, 2026. These dates matter when evaluating Skyborne reports: a player observed during the beta may have entered through a higher edition whose benefits include beta access, rather than having bought the race solely because of its gameplay or lore.
Is Skyborne really one of the beta’s most popular races?
There is evidence that Skyborne is highly visible. In an October 8 report, a GamesRadar writer said: “A huge chunk of the Beta players I see myself are playing as the race.” That supports the claim that Skyborne appears frequently in the sessions that writer observed.

It does not establish a population ranking. No official Skyborne sales total, complete beta population count or representative race-share survey has been published in the material available for this launch. Without those figures, “most popular” should be read as an impression of prevalence, not a measured statistic.

A Blizzard forum thread circulated a user analysis titled “59% Disapproval, Only 12% in Favor.” Participants in the same discussion challenged the method, noting that forum users with strong opinions are more likely to post and that some Skyborne purchases may have been motivated by beta access rather than approval of the race itself. The percentages are therefore community argument, not representative polling of players or purchasers.

Why Skyborne is controversial
A race behind a separate paywall
The unusual part of the monetization is the split between the game and the new race. Players already need a subscription or Game Time for Forever, yet Skyborne requires an additional shop purchase. Critics in the Blizzard forum thread objected to paying $30 for a race they did not ask for and questioned whether a separately sold race fits the expectations of a classic-oriented Warcraft project. Those are player criticisms, not an official finding about the game’s value.
Questions about classic Warcraft fit
Some players also argue that Skyborne is insufficiently rooted in classic Warcraft. Blizzard has presented Forever as its own continuity rather than a simple extension of every later World of Warcraft storyline. That distinction explains why the studio can introduce a new race while still describing the project as focused on Warcraft’s foundations, but it does not remove the disagreement over what “classic” should mean.

HD characters beside SD environments
The visual presentation created a separate flashpoint. GamesRadar reported Blizzard acknowledging that the HD Skyborne could look out of place beside the game’s standard-definition models and world. The studio’s update said: “We have heard feedback that the HD Skyborne can be jarring by contrast when placed in the same world as the SD models and world, and we agree.”

Blizzard’s stated reason for adding Skyborne
TechRadar quoted Blizzard saying, “We have no plans to add races from WoW’s expansions at this time.” The studio also said, “Our main focus for the game is to build off the foundational lore of Warcraft,” and described Forever as operating in its own continuity. The stated approach is to draw from foundational Warcraft RTS material rather than simply import races introduced by later World of Warcraft expansions.
GamesRadar separately reported senior game designer Josh Greenfield saying the team “knew we wanted to add some sort of elves,” with the idea reportedly stemming from veteran Chris Metzen. That is interview reporting about the team’s creative process, not an independently established lore explanation.

Buy if the race itself is the point
The purchase makes the clearest sense for players who specifically want Skyborne’s starting experience, appearance or class fantasy and accept that the SD versions arrive after launch. The included mount, cosmetics and housing items may add value, but the pack’s defining functional benefit is the race and Zephras Isle access.
Skip if you are evaluating Forever as a whole
You can play the broader Forever experience without Skyborne. Waiting also avoids paying for a race while Blizzard’s visual revisions remain unfinished and while the popularity evidence remains observational. The game’s launch date is November 4, 2026, so a player who is undecided can reassess after the beta and before buying.
What the evidence supports
Skyborne is one of the most noticeable races in the beta reports available so far, and its visibility is consistent with strong interest. The evidence does not prove that it has the largest population or that most players approve of the paywall. The $29.99/€29.99 price, separate subscription requirement, disputed classic fit and delayed SD models explain why the race can dominate discussion while remaining divisive.
