AI can produce a useful website draft in minutes, but it does not replace planning, editing, fact-checking or launch checks. The reliable process is a loop: define the site’s purpose and audience, write a detailed brief, generate a starting structure, refine it in the builder, verify every important claim and asset, test the visitor journey, then publish under the plan and domain conditions of your chosen platform.
What designing a website with AI actually involves
An AI website builder turns a description of your business, project or organization into an editable starting point. Depending on the product, that starting point can include page structure, sections, headlines, body copy, calls to action, colors, fonts, imagery and layout suggestions. You then work in the builder’s normal editor to remove, rewrite and rearrange those elements.

That distinction matters. The documented workflows from Wix, Framer and Squarespace describe generation as the beginning of a site-building process, not proof that one prompt produces a finished, accurate site. A generated page may misunderstand your service, invent a detail, omit a necessary page or use an image whose licensing status you have not checked. Treat the first version as a draft that accelerates decisions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- AI is useful for: proposing an information architecture, creating placeholder copy, suggesting a visual direction and giving you something concrete to edit.
- You remain responsible for: business facts, prices, contact details, legal or regulated wording, accessibility checks, image rights, links, forms and the final publishing decision.
- The platform still controls: available editing tools, integrations, domain connections, payment features, hosting and the plan required to publish.
Write the brief before opening a builder
A vague request such as “make a modern website for my company” leaves the system to guess at the decisions that affect whether the site works. Wix’s guidance asks for purpose, style, target audience, pages or sections and desired features. Squarespace similarly asks about purpose, audience, visitor actions and the desired feel. Use those categories as the minimum brief for any builder.

State the site’s purpose
Describe the outcome the site must support: booking appointments, explaining a service, collecting inquiries, selling products, publishing a portfolio, promoting an event or sharing information for a community. A clear purpose helps the generator prioritize the homepage headline and primary call to action.
Name the audience and context
Specify who will visit, what they already know and what may prevent them from taking action. Include location when the service is local, industry knowledge when the audience is technical, and device context when visitors are likely to arrive on phones.
Define visitor actions
List the actions that matter most, in priority order. Examples include “call the office,” “request a quote,” “book a consultation,” “download the pricing guide” or “join the mailing list.” Tell the builder where those actions should appear, such as the header, hero section, service pages and contact page.
List required pages and sections
Give the generator a concrete outline instead of hoping it will infer one. A local service site might need Home, Services, Service Area, About, Reviews, FAQ and Contact. A portfolio might need Work, About, Process and Contact. Mention special sections such as opening hours, pricing tables, team profiles, case studies, a map or a newsletter form.
Supply factual source material
Put verified names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, opening hours, service boundaries, prices, credentials and product specifications in the brief or in a separate reference document. Mark anything that is only a placeholder. Never allow an invented phone number, testimonial, certification or guarantee to survive simply because it sounds plausible.
Describe the voice and visual direction
Give usable adjectives and boundaries: “calm and reassuring, plain language, no exaggerated claims” is more actionable than “make it nice.” Add preferred colors, typography characteristics, image style, contrast requirements and examples of layouts you want to avoid. If you have brand guidelines, state which colors, logos and wording are mandatory.
A prompt template you can adapt
Use a structured brief such as this, replacing the values in the code block with your own information:

Make the first version easy to edit and flag any missing information instead of inventing it.
This is prompt-writing advice, not a guarantee of a particular output. Review the generated result against the brief rather than assuming every instruction was followed.
Generate the first version in an AI website builder
Wix: conversational setup and an editable site draft
In Wix Harmony, you describe the business or site in an AI chat, review the suggested description, add detail and generate the site. Wix says this process can create pages, layouts, colors, starter content and images. Its documented Wix Editor flow also gathers site details before generating a design and allows you to edit the brief and site structure afterward.
Use the first pass to inspect whether the generated navigation reflects your actual business. If a page is missing, add it before polishing colors. If the structure contains generic sections that do not support a visitor action, remove them. The editor and its AI tools are for refinement, not a substitute for checking the facts you supplied.
Framer: prompt, brief or canvas, followed by visual editing
Framer describes several starting points: a prompt, a brief, a blank canvas or an existing idea. Its product description says the generated draft can include structure, sections, headlines, supporting copy, calls to action and content direction. The output is an editable visual starting point; you continue by adjusting the canvas and responsive behavior.
Framer also describes CMS, SEO, hosting and publishing features in its product environment. Confirm the current settings and plan limits in your account before relying on a feature for a launch-critical workflow, because product packaging can change.
Squarespace: guided multi-page generation and direct editing
Squarespace’s documented flow asks for the site’s purpose, audience, visitor actions and desired feel. It then creates a multi-page starting point with content, imagery, styling and relevant pages. You edit the result directly in its drag-and-drop editor, changing copy, images, pages, layouts, colors, fonts and supported sections.
Check the page list before spending time on visual details. A polished template with no clear contact path or with an irrelevant page is still the wrong starting structure.
Judge the draft before polishing it
Do a content-and-structure pass first. Open every generated page and ask the following questions:
- Can a first-time visitor tell what the organization does from the first screen?
- Is there one obvious primary action, and does it lead to a working destination?
- Does the navigation use terms your audience understands?
- Are the essential pages present, in a sensible order, with no duplicate or filler pages?
- Does each section answer a real visitor question or support a decision?
- Are locations, prices, hours, names and service descriptions taken from verified information?
- Are claims, testimonials, statistics and credentials supported by records you can stand behind?
Fix missing or misleading structure before asking the AI to rewrite individual paragraphs. Otherwise you can spend time improving copy that belongs on a page you later delete.

Refine layout, content and brand details
Reduce the navigation to useful choices
Keep the main navigation focused on the pages visitors need to compare, trust and contact you. Move secondary information to the footer or a relevant page. Use descriptive labels rather than clever phrases that hide the destination.
Rewrite the hero section
The opening section should identify what you offer, where or for whom you offer it, and what the visitor can do next. Replace generic AI phrases with a specific promise you can substantiate. If the site serves a defined area, name it. If the visitor must book, make the booking action visible without requiring a scroll through unrelated copy.
Edit every generated paragraph
Check tone, terminology, reading level and specificity. Remove repetition and unsupported superlatives. Replace placeholder text, invented examples and vague claims. Keep service names, product specifications and policy wording consistent across pages.

Make visual choices support the message
Use a restrained color system, readable type sizes and predictable spacing. Check text against its background, especially over photographs. Choose images that show the real setting, product or audience when authenticity matters. Crop and position images so that faces, products and important context are not hidden on smaller screens.
Check responsive layouts
Inspect desktop, tablet and mobile views. Look for clipped headings, buttons that wrap awkwardly, horizontal scrolling, oversized images, crowded navigation and forms that are difficult to complete with a thumb. Framer documents responsive visual refinement; equivalent checks are still necessary in any builder.
Verify AI-generated content and asset rights
Wix warns that its AI may produce unexpected or inaccurate results and advises reviewing suggestions before finalizing a site. Its content guidance also tells users to review and edit generated text for accuracy, brand fit and required rights or licenses. Apply that quality-control principle to the entire site, regardless of which builder you use.
Fact-check high-consequence information
Compare the draft with authoritative records for:
- business names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and opening hours;
- prices, discounts, delivery areas, availability and cancellation terms;
- medical, financial, legal, safety or regulatory statements;
- qualifications, memberships, awards, certifications and partner names;
- customer testimonials, case-study results and performance claims.
Rewrite or remove anything you cannot verify. Do not treat confident wording as evidence.
Confirm permission to publish images and text
Record where every non-original image, logo, illustration, font and quoted passage came from and what permission covers web publication. Check whether attribution is required, whether commercial use is allowed and whether editing is restricted. Replace an asset when the license is unclear. Keep permission records with the site’s project files.

Review links, forms and data collection
Open every internal and external link. Submit forms in a test environment or with a controlled address, confirm the notification recipient and make sure the visitor sees a success or error message. Explain what information a form requests and avoid collecting data you do not need. Platform-specific privacy and consent requirements should be checked against the rules that apply to your organization and audience.
Test the visitor journey before publishing
- Start as a new visitor. Open the homepage without relying on your knowledge of the business. Identify the purpose and primary action within a few seconds.
- Follow each main call to action. Test booking, inquiry, purchase, download, email and telephone actions on both desktop and mobile.
- Check navigation states. Confirm menus open and close, the current page is identifiable and the logo returns to the intended homepage.
- Submit forms deliberately. Use test data, verify required-field messages and confirm that notifications arrive where expected.
- Inspect media and text. Look for missing images, broken embeds, accidental placeholder copy, inconsistent capitalization and headings that skip logical levels.
- Review mobile behavior. Test a narrow viewport and a touch device if available. Confirm that buttons have enough space and that no essential information is hidden.
- Run a final factual pass. Recheck contact details, prices, hours, legal language and any time-sensitive announcement immediately before launch.
These checks improve confidence in the particular site you are launching; they are not a guarantee of accessibility, security, legal compliance or search performance. For regulated or high-risk services, obtain the appropriate professional review.
Understand publishing, domains and plan requirements
Publishing conditions differ by platform and can change. Wix states that you can start building with AI for free, but a Premium Plan is needed to connect a custom domain, collect online payments or access additional features. Squarespace states that its builder is available during a free trial but that a paid website plan is required to publish. The Framer product page reviewed for this guide describes hosting and publishing, but it does not establish current plan prices or limits.
Recommended Free Tools
Before committing to a platform, check its current plan page and account settings for the specific features you need. Verify:
- whether the site can be published on a temporary platform address or requires payment;
- the cost and renewal terms for a custom domain;
- whether payments, bookings, memberships, analytics or integrations require an upgraded plan;
- storage, traffic, CMS or form limits that could affect your expected use;
- how to export, duplicate, back up or transfer the site if your needs change.
Vendor plan pages are volatile. The conditions above were stated on the product pages accessed on October 13, 2026; verify them again when you publish.

The comparison below describes documented starting points and editing models, not a hands-on performance test or a universal ranking.
| Criterion | Wix | Framer | Squarespace |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starting input | Conversational business or site details; Harmony lets you review and add detail before generation. | A prompt, brief, blank canvas or existing idea. | Purpose, audience, visitor actions and desired feel. |
| Generated starting point | Pages, layouts, colors, starter content and images in Harmony. | Structure, sections, headlines, supporting copy, calls to action and content direction. | A multi-page starting point with content, imagery, styling and relevant pages. |
| Refinement model | Edit the brief, structure, theme, layout and content in the editor. | Visually refine the generated design on the canvas and adjust responsive layouts. | Edit copy, images, pages, layouts, colors, fonts and supported sections directly. |
| Documented publishing condition | Building starts free; a Premium Plan is required for a custom domain, online payments or additional features, according to Wix. | Hosting and publishing are described; current plan prices and limits were not stated in the reviewed material. | A free trial is available for exploration; a paid website plan is required to publish. |
| Useful fit to investigate | A conversational, business-oriented setup with documented domain and business-feature steps. | A prompt-to-editable visual workflow with product-described CMS, SEO and hosting features. | A guided multi-page start followed by editor-based customization. |
Choose based on the amount and type of control your site needs. A business that depends on payments or bookings should verify those features and plan gates first. A design-led project may prioritize canvas control and responsive editing. A content-heavy site should examine its page, CMS and editing workflow. None of these distinctions establishes that one platform is best for every project.

Troubleshoot common AI website problems
The draft is attractive but says nothing specific
Return to the brief and add audience, location, services, proof points and a primary action. Replace broad adjectives with verifiable details, then regenerate only the affected section or rewrite it manually.
Best Value
The builder invented facts
Remove the unsupported statement, check the rest of the site for similar inventions and add a verified-facts list to the brief. Never leave an invented testimonial, credential, price or result as temporary copy if the site may be shared.
Important pages or actions are missing
Add the page or section explicitly and state where its call to action should appear. Recheck the navigation, footer and mobile menu after the change. Generation is not a reliable substitute for an information architecture you have already decided.
The visual style changes from page to page
Define a small set of approved colors, fonts, button styles, image treatments and heading rules. Apply those choices through the builder’s global theme controls where available, then inspect individual pages for overrides.

Replace them with original, commissioned or clearly licensed assets. Add useful alternative text for informative images and mark decorative images appropriately in the editor. Keep a record of source and permission.
The site cannot publish on the intended domain
Check whether the platform requires a paid plan for publishing or custom-domain connection, confirm that the domain is registered and unlocked for the required change, and follow the platform’s current connection instructions. Do not advertise the domain until the live version resolves correctly.
A form or integration fails after launch
Retest the form from the published URL, inspect notification settings and verify that the connected service still authorizes the integration. Provide a visible alternate contact method while the fault is being fixed.
A practical decision sequence
- Clarify the outcome. If you cannot name the main visitor action, do not generate yet.
- Write the brief and verified-facts list. Include audience, pages, voice, visual direction and constraints.
- Choose a builder by workflow. Compare the documented input method, editing model and features you actually require.
- Generate one starting version. Evaluate structure before investing in styling.
- Refine manually and with targeted AI help. Remove irrelevant sections, rewrite copy and standardize design.
- Verify claims and rights. Check facts, permissions, links, forms and sensitive wording.
- Test the complete journey. Use desktop and mobile views and the published address when possible.
- Confirm plan and domain conditions. Upgrade or connect services only after you know what the launch requires.
- Publish, then monitor. Recheck forms, contact routes and time-sensitive information after launch and whenever the business changes.
The result is not “a website made by a prompt.” It is a site whose first draft was accelerated by AI and whose structure, content, rights and launch conditions were deliberately checked by its owner.
