Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo avoid overselling, treat each seat as authoritative inventory and make the final claim a conditional state change—not a promise based on a seat map or earlier read. On AWS, a practical starting pattern is API Gateway and Lambda for request handling, DynamoDB for ticket inventory, and SQS for work that can safely finish asynchronously. The key architectural choice is whether the buyer gets an immediate claim result or a pending request that is resolved later.
Separate availability from ownership
A seat map helps buyers choose, but it is only a view of availability. Two buyers can see the same seat before either submits a reservation. A prior read, cached availability value, or UI lock cannot establish exclusive ownership.

Make the inventory write authoritative. Model a seat with an explicit state such as AVAILABLE, HELD, and SOLD. When a buyer attempts to reserve it, perform a conditional write that changes the state only if the stored item is still in the expected state. DynamoDB condition expressions support this pattern: a write is rejected when its condition is false. This makes the seat transition—not the earlier availability check—the point at which competing claims are decided. AWS documents conditional writes in its DynamoDB condition-expression example.
Keep browsing and claiming on different paths where useful. Read-heavy seat maps and show information can be served and scaled separately from the write authority. Whatever data powers the displayed map, the reservation operation must check the authoritative inventory at claim time.

A suitable AWS starting architecture
AWS’s ticket-oriented serverless example provides a relevant foundation, though it is an example architecture rather than a prescribed flash-sale design. It serves static website content from S3 through CloudFront, exposes ticket, show, and information services through API Gateway and Lambda, and uses DynamoDB for ticket and show data. Users authenticate through an external identity provider, with tokens validated by a Lambda authorizer; each Lambda function receives an IAM role for its data source.
For a reservation system, organize the request path around the business outcome:
- Browse: deliver the site and seat-map experience separately from the final inventory claim. Treat displayed availability as advisory.
- Request a seat: authenticate and validate the request, then attempt the conditional inventory transition.
- Return an outcome: either return a definitive result after the claim attempt or acknowledge durable receipt and report a pending request, depending on the chosen flow.
- Complete downstream work: publish or queue confirmed reservation events for tasks such as payment follow-up, notification, analytics, or ticket delivery when those tasks do not need to block the seat claim.
AWS’s lodging reservation guidance separates administration, inventory, search, dynamic pricing, and booking responsibilities. Ticketing is not lodging, but the decomposition is useful: isolate discovery and seat-map reads from the booking authority, and keep downstream consumers from becoming accidental owners of inventory correctness.

Choose the response contract before adding a queue
A queue is not just an implementation detail. It determines what the buyer can be told when the initial request is accepted.
| Request flow | What the buyer receives | Traffic and contention implications | Operational requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Synchronous authoritative claim | A definitive success or failure after the conditional claim is attempted. | The request path must handle sale traffic and contention; the claim happens before the response. | Monitor request failures and latency, and make client retries safe. |
| Asynchronous admission and processing | A request identifier and pending status first; the seat outcome arrives later. | A queue can buffer bursts and decouple acceptance from processing, but it does not make a particular seat successfully claimed at admission time. | Track queue delay, retries, idempotency, failed-message handling, result retrieval, and hold-expiry policy. |
Use synchronous claims when certainty matters immediately
If the interface promises that a named seat is reserved as soon as the buyer receives a response, perform the conditional claim in the synchronous path. A queue can still handle follow-on tasks, but should not sit between the buyer’s request and the seat claim unless the UI explicitly communicates that the outcome is pending.
Use asynchronous admission when pending is acceptable
AWS’s API Gateway, SQS, and Fargate example accepts a POST, returns a job identifier, processes a queue message, and lets a client retrieve the later result. The same pattern can absorb reservation intents, but it cannot truthfully promise a particular seat at acceptance time. The product needs a clear pending state and a way to retrieve the outcome.

That AWS guidance describes a 29-second hard integration timeout for the REST API case covered by that document. Treat it as configuration- and API-type-specific guidance, not a universal API Gateway timeout; verify the current quota and applicable API type before using it as a design constraint.
Make retries and holds part of the domain design
Network failures can leave a client unsure whether a request succeeded. A retry must not create a second hold, duplicate a ticket, or reverse a completed claim. Give reservation attempts an idempotency key or another durable way to detect that the operation has already completed. Apply the same rule to queue redelivery: processing the same accepted intent again must not produce a second reservation.
Define a deterministic hold-expiry rule. A hold that expires must release inventory in a way that cannot race with a successful payment or another state transition. Decide which state changes are valid, what event or process triggers expiration, and how a delayed or repeated expiration attempt is handled. These are ticketing-domain responsibilities; they are not guarantees provided by the AWS asynchronous sample.

Plan explicit recovery paths for work that cannot complete normally. AWS’s asynchronous example uses a dead-letter queue for failed processing, error handling that stores job parameters, and EventBridge archiving and replay for events that still fail. Applied to reservations, these patterns help make failures inspectable and recoverable; they do not remove the need to reconcile queue outcomes with the authoritative seat state.
- Claim succeeded, response was lost: a retry should find the prior result rather than create a second hold.
- Message is processed more than once: the worker should recognize the completed reservation and avoid duplicate side effects.
- Downstream notification or analytics fails: retry or replay that work without treating it as proof that the seat claim failed.
- Reservation processing repeatedly fails: route it to an inspectable failure path and provide a controlled recovery procedure.
Keep the seat claim independent of downstream work
Payment, notification, analytics, and ticket delivery may follow a successful reservation, but they have different failure modes from the inventory write. Publish or enqueue confirmed reservation events for those consumers where appropriate. Unless the business transaction explicitly requires otherwise, a notification or analytics outage should not silently undo a successful seat claim.
Be precise about what “reserved” means in the product. A conditional transition to HELD is not necessarily the same as a paid, issued ticket. Define the later transitions—such as payment completion, sale confirmation, or hold release—and make each transition check the expected current state. This avoids treating asynchronous follow-up as if it were part of the initial atomic claim.
What this architecture cannot decide without workload requirements
The AWS examples establish useful building blocks and patterns, not a capacity guarantee for a particular event. Expected arrival rate, sale duration, venue and seat count, payment sequence, hold duration, acceptable queue delay, deployment geography, and recovery objectives all affect admission control, data layout, queue policy, and multi-region decisions. Without those inputs and a workload test, a numeric throughput or latency promise would be speculative.
AWS’s broader Lambda design guidance also distinguishes queues, event buses, and orchestration as patterns for different kinds of work. Choose among them according to whether a task is a buffered work item, an event for multiple consumers, or a workflow that needs coordination; do not add components before the business flow requires them.
