Design Once, Reuse Forever? What a Reconfigurable Analog Front End Can—and Can’t—Do

A reconfigurable analog front end (AFE) lets one hardware design serve more than one supported signal mode by switching or programming parts of its signal path. That can reduce duplicated circuitry and let equipment accommodate different sensors, but it does not make one circuit electrically compatible with every sensor. Reuse ends at the design’s limits for voltage, current, common-mode range, source impedance, bandwidth, noise, protection, isolation, calibration, and ADC range.

What does “reconfigurable analog front end” mean?

An AFE conditions a sensor’s analog signal before conversion or further processing. Depending on the design, it can include amplifiers, gain stages, filters, switches, sensor-excitation sources, protection, isolation, and an analog-to-digital converter (ADC). Reconfiguration means that some of these resources can be selected or adjusted for different supported signals, rather than building a separate fixed signal path for every mode.

The term covers several different levels of flexibility. A board can switch among circuits intended for particular sensor types; an integrated AFE can program settings such as gain and filter corner; or a field-programmable analog array (FPAA) can configure a wider analog-and-digital fabric. These approaches are not interchangeable: a programmable setting in a fixed-function chip offers a different scope of reuse from a broadly configurable fabric.

How can one industrial AFE support multiple sensors?

Analog Devices’ CN0209 process-control reference design is a concrete example of board-level reconfiguration. Its documented input modes include 2-, 3-, and 4-wire resistance temperature detectors (RTDs), thermocouples with cold-junction compensation, unipolar or bipolar voltage inputs up to ±10 V, and 4–20 mA current loops. A serially controlled octal switch selects the measurement configuration. Conditioning feeds an AD7193 sigma-delta ADC; the design also includes an RTD excitation source, a temperature sensor for thermocouple cold-junction compensation, isolation, and external protection. Analog Devices’ CN0209 circuit note describes the design and its modes.

Adjustable Breathing Light Set Analog Circuit Board for Beginners Education Without Programming Required Design Learn Electronics Soldering
  • Heart shaped appearance+practical layout: LEDs form a heart shaped pattern, with clear component layout. The front emit light and the back is soldered, balancing aesthetics and ease of operate
  • Low welding difficulty, suitable for beginners: without precised components, complete accessories, low voltages (4-6V) power supply, welding is not easy to damage, friendly for beginners to practice
  • Lightweight and cost-effective: compact in size, lightweight (approximately 130g), powered by USB/battery, suitable for or e-learning bulk purchases
  • Adjustable breathing rate gameplay activity: equipped with potentiometer, adjustable breathing speed, supports component replacement to explore different effects, and expands learning space
  • Easy to learn analog circuits: With LM358 operational amplifier as the cored part, without programming is required, and analog circuits are used to achieve breathing effects, suitable for beginners to learn basic electronic principles

The reuse is possible because the board routes and conditions each supported input in a way suited to its measurement mode. For example, an RTD needs excitation to measure resistance, while a thermocouple’s small voltage depends on cold-junction compensation. Switching among modes changes how the available circuitry is used; it does not erase those sensor-specific requirements.

CN0209’s reported effective resolution by mode

The following figures are from Analog Devices’ 2011 circuit note, based on 1,000 samples. The note reports them for the listed output data rates and modes; they are not universal resolution figures for other configurations or AFEs.

CN0209 input mode Output data rate Reported effective resolution
±10 V input 50 Hz 19.15 bits
4–20 mA 2.63 Hz 22.24 bits
RTD 2.63 Hz 20.29 bits
Thermocouple 2.63 Hz 19.23 bits

Because the data rates differ, the values should be read in the context of their respective modes and ADC setups, not as a direct ranking of sensor types.

How do integrated biomedical AFEs reconfigure?

Biomedical examples illustrate another kind of reuse: tuning an integrated signal path for different signal characteristics or acquisition needs. The reported evidence spans a simulated ECG design, a fabricated neural AFE with separate signal bands, and a later simulated design that varies bandwidth and power with clock frequency. Their numbers describe different designs and test conditions, so they do not establish a common performance ranking.

ECG: programmable settings in a simulated design

A June 2023 Microelectronics Journal paper proposes an ECG acquisition AFE using a capacitor-coupled instrumentation amplifier, independent biasing, AC coupling, and a programmable low-pass filter. For its 0.13 μm CMOS design, the authors report post-simulation results of 48 μW whole-AFE power, 0.6 μV integrated noise, and selectable low-pass corners of 380 Hz, 451 Hz, and 1 kHz. These are simulation results, not measurements of fabricated silicon. The paper’s abstract and record describe the design.

Neural signals: separate LFP and action-potential modes

A fabricated neural AFE reported in an April 2024 IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Circuits and Systems paper uses tunable gain and filters for local-field-potential (LFP) and action-potential (AP) acquisition. In the reported test setup, it measured an LFP band of 0.5–200 Hz and an AP band of 300 Hz–5 kHz, with gains of 39.6 dB and 59.5 dB and input-referred noise of 2.2 μVrms and 6.3 μVrms, respectively. The paper reports 6.3 μW per-channel AFE power and a 1.4 mm × 0.25 mm die for that fabricated design. These are design-specific results, not general figures for neural AFEs. The IEEE paper record reports the design and measurements.

Clock-controlled bandwidth and power: a 2026 simulation

A July 2026 Microelectronics Journal abstract describes a 180 nm CMOS bio-potential AFE in which clock frequency reconfigures bandwidth and power. The authors report simulated bandwidth from 0.62 to 48.4 kHz and simulated power from 1.2 to 79 μW. Its stated 75× scalability is based on simulation; the abstract does not establish those ranges as measured behavior of a production device. The article abstract gives the reported figures.

What does an FPAA add?

A field-programmable analog array broadens the idea beyond selecting modes within a purpose-built sensor AFE. In a 2016 IEEE Transactions on Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) Systems paper, Suma George and co-authors describe a mixed-mode FPAA system-on-chip fabricated in 350 nm CMOS. Its fabric combines configurable analog blocks, digital logic blocks, routing, programming infrastructure, and an MSP430-class microprocessor.

The authors demonstrate compiled analog and digital circuits and report 23 μW system power for an experimentally demonstrated audio command-word classifier. That is a result for the paper’s particular system, not a general AFE power benchmark. The paper also discusses trade-offs involving area, density, routing, and programming; its comparisons apply to the architectures and baselines studied. The full FPAA paper details the fabric and demonstration.

What can be reused—and what still has to fit?

Reconfiguration can reuse some combination of amplifiers, switches, gain stages, filters, ADC paths, excitation sources, and control logic across specified modes. Software or digital controls select the available configurations. The benefit is fewer separately designed signal paths or a product that can adapt to several defined sensors or operating bands—not an unlimited universal input.

  • Signal levels: input voltage or current range, polarity, common-mode range, and ADC input range.
  • Source and sensor needs: source impedance, required excitation, biasing, coupling, and compensation.
  • Signal quality and speed: bandwidth, gain range, noise, linearity, resolution at the chosen bandwidth and data rate, and how quickly modes can switch.
  • System boundaries: protection, isolation, calibration and drift behavior, and any external components required for each mode.
  • Power accounting: whether a stated figure is per channel or whole system and whether it includes the ADC, control logic, and sensor excitation.

A design that supports multiple modes only solves the reuse problem within its documented limits. A sensor outside the input range, noise target, protection scheme, or bandwidth may need a different front end or additional circuitry.

How to choose a reuse approach

Compare candidate designs against the actual sensor set and operating requirements, rather than treating “programmable” as a performance guarantee. For each option, establish:

  • Which transducers and signal ranges are explicitly supported, including common-mode voltage and source impedance.
  • Noise and resolution at the required bandwidth and data rate, with measured silicon results distinguished from simulations.
  • Available gain, coupling, filter corners, and the granularity and speed of mode changes.
  • Power scope and external requirements for each mode, including excitation, protection, isolation, calibration, and board-level components.
  • The kind of reuse: a fixed-function IC with programmable settings, a modular reference board, or a broad FPAA fabric.
  • The development and test burden: configuration software, programming tools, evaluation hardware, supplies, sensor fixtures, and calibration procedures.

The examples here target different sensors, bandwidths, fabrication approaches, and test conditions. They show several real ways to reuse analog circuitry, but do not support a universal ranking of which architecture is best.
