The same calculation—such as a mean or percentage—can serve either purpose. What matters is the question being answered and how far the conclusion reaches.
What is the difference between descriptive and inferential statistics?
Descriptive statistics organize and summarize observed data. OpenStax puts it simply: “Organizing and summarizing data is called descriptive statistics.” Inferential statistics use data and probability-based methods to draw conclusions about a population or process beyond the observations.
| Question | Descriptive statistics | Inferential statistics |
|---|---|---|
| What is the scope? | The data collected and observed | A wider population or process the data are intended to represent |
| What question does it answer? | What do these data show? | What can these data tell us about a wider group or process? |
| What might it produce? | Tables, graphs, averages, and other summaries | Estimates with uncertainty or a test of a specified claim |
| How does uncertainty matter? | It reports the observed data without generalizing beyond them | Sampling variability and assumptions matter when drawing conclusions beyond the sample |
A useful classification question is: Am I describing only the data I have, or using them to say something about a wider population?
Population, sample, statistic, and parameter
These four terms clarify what an analysis describes and what it may try to estimate:

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Population: the full collection of people, objects, or events under study.
- Sample: a selected subset of that population. Researchers often sample because examining the entire population would take substantial time or money.
- Statistic: a quantity calculated from sample data, such as the sample mean.
- Parameter: a quantity describing the population, such as the population mean.
A statistic can summarize its sample, or it can be used to learn about a population parameter. That second step is inference, and it depends on whether the sample and method support the conclusion.
Descriptive statistics: summarize what you observed
Descriptive work helps make a dataset easier to read. It can organize values, display them in graphs, and calculate numerical summaries such as an average. These outputs describe the data at hand; by themselves, they do not establish what is true of people or events outside those data.

Example: the average score in one class
If a teacher calculates the average score for every student in one class, that average describes the class’s observed scores. It remains descriptive even if the teacher used a formula that could also be used in an inferential analysis.
Inferential statistics: estimate or test beyond the sample
Inferential methods use sample data to estimate a population quantity or assess a claim about a population. The result does not automatically apply to the wider group: the sampling process and the method’s assumptions need to support that reach.

Example: estimating a school-wide average
A researcher who measures scores for a sample of students and uses those results to estimate the average score of all students in a school is making an inference. The sample mean still describes the sampled students; treating it as evidence about the school population is the inferential step.
Point estimates and confidence intervals
A point estimate gives a single estimated value for a population parameter. An interval estimate, such as a confidence interval, gives a range intended to capture the unknown parameter under the method’s assumptions. NIST describes interval estimates as a way to quantify uncertainty in a sample estimate. An interval communicates uncertainty; it does not turn the estimate into a certainty.

Hypothesis tests
A hypothesis test evaluates sample evidence in relation to a specified claim, often called the null hypothesis. It assesses whether the evidence is sufficient to reject that null hypothesis under the test procedure; it does not prove a claim true or false. NIST’s Engineering Statistics Handbook discusses interval estimates and hypothesis tests as methods for addressing uncertainty and claims about population parameters.

OpenStax illustrates inferential questions with estimating a town’s average two-bedroom rent from listed rents, estimating a basketball shooter’s true proportion of successful shots from attempts, and testing a claim about a truck’s average fuel economy. In each case, the analysis reaches beyond the observations. Whether the data actually support that reach depends on the sample and the relevant assumptions.

By contrast, calculating the percentage of successful shots in a recorded set of attempts is descriptive if the conclusion stops at those attempts. Using that percentage to estimate the shooter’s longer-run success rate is inferential. The arithmetic may be the same; the intended conclusion is different.
A quick way to classify a statistical result
- Name the data: Identify exactly which people, objects, or events were observed.
- Identify the target: Is the conclusion limited to those observations, or does it refer to a larger population or process?
- Check the output: A graph or summary can be descriptive; an estimate or test can be inferential. But output type alone is not decisive.
- Check the reach: If the conclusion extends beyond the data, ask whether the sampling and method assumptions justify it.
A mean, percentage, or graph computed from a sample is not automatically inferential. It is descriptive when it summarizes that sample. It becomes part of inferential work when used to estimate, predict, or test a claim beyond the observations.
