Verdict: The Denon AH-C840NCW is worth considering when strong noise cancellation, wireless charging and a sealed in-ear fit matter most. It is a less convincing buy if you want highly audible transparency, a very secure fit for walking or running, or a feature-rich package at this price.
What the Denon AH-C840NCW is
The AH-C840NCW is Denon’s true wireless in-ear earbud with adaptive hybrid active noise cancellation (ANC). It combines sealed ear tips with 12 mm dynamic drivers, a transparency mode, Bluetooth 5.3, multipoint pairing for two devices and an adjustable equalizer in the Denon Headphones app. Denon also lists Google Fast Pair, Windows Swift Pair, touch controls, AAC, SBC and LC3 codec support, IPX4 protection, USB-C charging and wireless charging for the case. The official product information is available from Denon.

That specification gives the AH-C840NCW a credible everyday feature set, but the buying decision turns on three practical questions: whether the supplied tips stay secure in your ears, whether you prefer strong isolation or an open-feeling transparency mode, and whether the rest of the feature package justifies the asking price in your market.
Key specifications
| Specification | Denon AH-C840NCW | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Design | Sealed in-ear true wireless earbuds | Ear tips create a physical seal that supports passive isolation and ANC. |
| Driver | 12 mm dynamic driver | A relatively large driver for this class; driver size alone does not predict sound quality. |
| Noise control | Adaptive hybrid ANC and transparency mode | Designed to reduce outside noise or pass some environmental sound through. |
| Bluetooth | Bluetooth 5.3 | Current-generation wireless connectivity; the phone and computer still determine which features are available. |
| Codecs | AAC, SBC and LC3 | Codec use depends on the source device and operating system. |
| Multipoint | Two devices | Lets the earbuds remain connected to two sources, subject to device compatibility. |
| App controls | 5-band EQ, control customization, wear-detection settings and firmware updates | Settings are managed in the Denon Headphones app. |
| Broadcast audio | Auracast support enabled by an update | Check the app and firmware version on your pair before relying on this feature. |
| Protection | IPX4 | Suitable for splashes and sweat as Denon describes it, not submersion. |
| Charging | USB-C and wireless charging case | A wireless pad is optional; USB-C is the wired charging method. |
| Finishes | Black or white | Colour availability can vary by region. |
Battery life: read the conditions, not just the headline number
Denon quotes up to 10 hours from the earbuds with ANC off and up to 7 hours with ANC on. Including the charging case, the figures are up to 35 hours with ANC off and 24 hours with ANC on. These are manufacturer estimates from a January 2025 test using a production AH-C840NCW, a smartphone, a stereo AAC track and 50% volume; Denon states that actual use varies. The official manual lists the same approximate figures at Denon’s specification page.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The seven-hour ANC-on estimate is the useful planning figure for commuters and office users. It leaves room for a normal workday with charging during a break, but long flights or several consecutive days away from a charger require the case. Since playback depends on volume, codec, call time, temperature and other settings, treat the numbers as a ceiling rather than a guaranteed runtime.
Denon says five minutes of charging provides about one hour of playback. The case can charge over USB-C or on a compatible wireless charging pad. Neither the five-minute figure nor the total-runtime figures are independent laboratory measurements.
ANC and transparency performance
TechRadar reviewer Tom Bedford used the earbuds for two weeks in a home, office, public-transport and gym routine, as well as on walks and runs. He described the ANC as impressive and wrote that it was “meaty, wiping out annoying background noises without a trace.” That is his listening assessment, not a published attenuation measurement; no independent decibel test is established in the available material. His full review is at TechRadar.

A good ear-tip seal remains important because ANC cannot compensate fully for sound entering around a loose tip. The AH-C840NCW’s sealed design gives it a physical-isolation advantage over open-fit earbuds, but the benefit depends on your ear shape and the tip you select.

Bedford’s main reservation was transparency mode. He found it sounded more like weaker ANC and let in less surrounding sound than he expected. That makes the mode less suitable when you need a natural conversation or clear awareness of traffic. It may still be adequate for brief announcements or a quick exchange, but his result shows why buyers who prioritise environmental awareness should try the mode before committing.
Fit and comfort: four tip options, but no guarantee of security
The box includes S, Long S, M and L ear tips. The Long S option is useful when a conventional small tip does not reach far enough to seal, while the larger sizes can improve isolation for wider ear canals. Denon’s inclusion of four choices gives you a reasonable starting range, but it does not remove the need to test each side independently; many people have slightly different left and right ear shapes.
Bedford reported that the earbuds slipped from his ears even during walks. That is one reviewer’s experience and may not generalise to every listener, but it is a significant consideration for anyone planning to run or exercise in them. A loose fit can reduce bass, weaken passive isolation and make ANC seem less effective, so fit is not merely a comfort issue.
A practical fitting routine
- Start with the pre-installed medium tips and insert each earbud while gently twisting it until the body feels supported.
- If the seal feels weak or bass sounds thin, try the larger tip. If the earbud feels pressured or works loose, try the smaller tip.
- Test the Long S tip if the standard small tip does not seal deeply enough.
- Walk, turn your head and speak for several minutes before judging stability. A fit that works while seated may loosen during movement.
- After choosing tips, check that both earbuds charge correctly in the case and that wear detection behaves as expected.
Replacement tips are worth considering only if the supplied sizes cannot provide a seal or if an original tip is lost. Verify compatibility with the AH-C840NCW before buying replacements.

Sound quality and controls
The 12 mm free-edge bio-cellulose drivers are a hardware specification, not a promise of a particular tuning. Denon provides a five-band EQ in its app, allowing you to adjust the balance rather than accept the default profile. A listener who wants more vocal presence can reduce excessive bass or raise the relevant midrange bands; someone who prefers a warmer presentation can do the opposite. EQ changes are personal, so there is no universally correct setting.
Touch controls are customizable in the Denon Headphones app. The app also includes wear-detection settings, which can pause or resume playback when an earbud is removed if you enable the function. Control customisation is useful when the factory arrangement conflicts with how you normally pause, skip or change listening modes.
Connectivity, multipoint and Auracast
Bluetooth 5.3, Google Fast Pair and Windows Swift Pair simplify first-time pairing on supported Android and Windows devices. Multipoint allows connection to two devices, such as a phone and laptop, so you can move between music and a call without manually disconnecting each time. The exact handoff behaviour depends on the connected devices and their Bluetooth implementations.
Denon’s manufacturer announcement says Auracast broadcast audio support was enabled by an update. Firmware can differ between units, so open the Denon Headphones app and install any available firmware before assuming Auracast is active. The announcement and update context are documented by Denon’s parent company at this announcement.

Recommended first setup
- Charge the earbuds and case over USB-C before the first extended session.
- Pair through your phone or computer using Google Fast Pair, Windows Swift Pair or the normal Bluetooth device list.
- Install the Denon Headphones app and check for firmware updates.
- Set your preferred touch actions, EQ and wear-detection behaviour in the app.
- Pair the second device and test multipoint switching before relying on it for work calls.
- Recheck the app after updates because firmware may add or change feature availability, including Auracast.
Calls and microphones
Denon lists two microphones per earbud, but the supplied information does not include an independent speech-quality test, wind-noise measurement or a quantified call result. Expect call performance to depend on microphone placement, wind, traffic and the phone or computer used. If voice calls are a primary reason to buy, test the earbuds in the locations where you normally speak rather than assuming the microphone count guarantees clarity.
IPX4 protection: what you can and cannot do
IPX4 is splash and sweat protection as Denon describes it. It is appropriate for ordinary gym use, light rain and perspiration, but it does not make the earbuds waterproof or suitable for swimming, showering or submersion. Wipe away moisture and let the earbuds dry before storing them in the case.

The closest in-brand decision is about physical design rather than a simple feature-score winner. Denon describes the AH-C500W as open-fit and without ear tips, while the AH-C840NCW is a sealed in-ear model with ANC. The practical trade-off is isolation and noise reduction versus a more open fit and greater environmental awareness.

Alternatives mentioned in the review context
In its July 2025 review context, TechRadar placed the AH-C840NCW alongside the OnePlus Buds 4, Skullcandy Method 360 and Nothing Ear as same-price alternatives. Those models, prices and availability change by country and date, so the names are useful as comparison leads rather than a current buying table. Compare them on ANC effectiveness, transparency quality, fit security, sound tuning, ANC-on battery life, call performance, multipoint and app features, water protection and your local price.
Price and availability
Denon’s Great Britain product page showed the AH-C840NCW at £149 and in stock when retrieved on October 13, 2026: Denon Great Britain. TechRadar also used £149 as the UK price in July 2025 and noted modest discounts at that time. Neither figure should be treated as a global or permanent offer. Check your country’s Denon store or an authorised retailer immediately before purchase for the current price, stock, seller and warranty terms.
Strengths and weaknesses
What the AH-C840NCW does well
- Strong ANC according to Tom Bedford’s two-week hands-on assessment.
- Sealed in-ear design that can provide useful passive isolation when the tip fit is correct.
- Wireless charging case, USB-C charging and a five-minute quick-charge claim of about one hour.
- Multipoint for two devices, app EQ and customizable controls.
- Current connectivity features including Bluetooth 5.3, Google Fast Pair and Windows Swift Pair.
- Four supplied tip choices, including Long S, to improve the chance of a workable seal.
Where it falls short
- Transparency sounded too subdued for Bedford, who expected more outside sound.
- He experienced slipping during walks, making exercise security a personal risk to test.
- The feature set is relatively limited against some rivals at the same price, in his view.
- Battery numbers are manufacturer estimates rather than independent measurements.
- IPX4 protects against splashes and sweat but not immersion.
Who should buy the Denon AH-C840NCW?
Buy it if your priorities are effective ANC, a sealed ear-tip design, wireless charging and the convenience of two-device multipoint. It is especially logical for office and travel use when you can confirm that one of the supplied tips stays secure.

Bedford’s experience does not prove that every pair will move in your ears, but it is enough reason to test fit during the return period. Also look elsewhere if a natural transparency mode, extensive smart features or independently verified battery performance is more important than Denon’s core ANC and charging package.
Tom Bedford’s overall conclusion captures the trade-off: “I generally enjoyed listening to the Denon AH-C840NCW during my testing, but that’s not the same as recommending them to buy with your own money.” His assessment explains why these earbuds are an appealing shortlist option rather than an automatic recommendation: the noise cancellation is a clear strength, while fit, transparency and feature breadth determine whether the £149-class package works for you.
