This is not a count of current Danish residents: the CPR contains about 11 million registered people, including people who have died or moved abroad. Authorities had stopped the company’s access, but the cause and responsibility remained under investigation in official notices dated 5–6 October 2026.
What happened in the CPR incident?
According to the Ministry’s 5 October 2026 announcement, unauthorized parties misused a Danish company’s access to search the CPR system. The Ministry said the access was lawful in principle: a business with a legitimate interest could request information about a larger, defined group of people it had identified individually in advance, subject to data-protection law. The reported incident was misuse of that access.

The Ministry said the accessed information included names, addresses, CPR numbers and other data. CPR administration became aware on Friday, 2 October, of irregular activity in the system during September; the Ministry said unauthorized access was established over that weekend. The company’s access was stopped.

The Ministry described the incident as serious. Minister Christina Egelund said, in translation, that it was “a deeply serious incident” and that she had informed Parliament’s Business and Digitalisation Committee.

How many people were affected, and what does that figure mean?
The Ministry reported access to information for about 8.8 million registered people. It also said the CPR contains about 11 million registered people, including people who have died and people who have moved abroad. The 8.8 million figure therefore should not be described as the number of current Danish residents.
The Ministry said the names and addresses of people registered with name-and-address protection were not included in the reported unauthorized access. That statement is limited to those names and addresses; it does not establish that every other kind of information about those people was unaffected.

What is known—and what remains under investigation?
Datatilsynet, Denmark’s data-protection regulator, said it received a report from the CPR register on 4 October. The report described a very large number of automated lookups intended to identify valid CPR numbers. In its 6 October 2026 notice, the regulator said it was examining what happened, how it could happen and who was responsible, and that it could not yet assess the specific facts.

The Ministry said the matter had been reported to Datatilsynet, specialists and authorities were mapping the incident, and police were investigating. At the time of the official notices, authorities could not say who was behind the activity. Those notices do not establish the exact technical cause, a particular credential compromise, a motive, or that the data was published online.

What should you do if you may be affected?
The Ministry’s guidance is to be alert to unexpected requests for information. A caller or sender knowing your name, address or CPR number does not prove they are legitimate. Do not provide passwords or other confidential information in response to an unexpected phone call, email or similar contact—even if the person appears to know personal details.
- End an unexpected conversation before sharing passwords, authentication codes or other confidential information.
- Use contact details you find independently through an official channel rather than replying to a suspicious message or relying on a caller’s instructions.
- Consult Sikkerdigital.dk for official digital-security guidance. The Ministry also directs people to the Cyberhotline for digital security at +45 33 37 00 37.
The Ministry’s announcement noted expanded Cyberhotline hours of 08:00–24:00 in the days following publication. Those hours were temporary; check current availability before calling.

Could a caller use the information in a scam?
Personal details can make an unsolicited call or message sound convincing, but familiarity is not proof of identity or authority. Treat requests for passwords and other confidential information as unsafe regardless of how much the contact already appears to know. The official guidance recommends vigilance and using public security resources; it does not recommend buying a product to address this incident.
What authorities said about affected users
The Danish Immigration Service and SIRI said their users may also be affected. They added extra identity-verification questions for telephone enquiries to Citizen Service. This is a measure those agencies announced for their own calls, not confirmation that a particular individual’s information was accessed.
