When should you seek urgent care for possible dengue?
Get medical help immediately if someone with suspected dengue develops any warning sign below. These symptoms can indicate severe dengue, which may cause shock, serious bleeding, or organ impairment and requires emergency treatment. Use your local emergency service for severe symptoms; emergency numbers and referral pathways vary by location.

- Severe abdominal pain or tenderness
- Persistent vomiting
- Rapid or difficult breathing
- Bleeding from the nose or gums, or blood in vomit or stool
- Marked fatigue, restlessness, or weakness
- Intense thirst, pale or cold skin, or other signs of becoming seriously unwell
WHO says, “People with these severe symptoms should seek care immediately.” Warning signs often appear around days 3–7 after symptoms begin and may emerge as the fever goes away. A lower temperature is not, by itself, evidence of recovery.
What symptoms can dengue cause?
Dengue symptoms commonly include high fever, headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, nausea, vomiting, swollen glands, and rash. They usually start 4–10 days after infection and last 2–7 days. Symptoms alone cannot establish whether someone has dengue; diagnosis involves clinical evaluation and may include blood testing and medical or travel history. See a doctor promptly if dengue is suspected, even before warning signs appear. WHO’s dengue fact sheet reported 14.6 million cases globally in 2024, the highest number in a 12-month period; that global figure does not indicate an individual’s likelihood of infection or severe illness.

How is the level of care decided?
Care setting depends on symptoms, ability to maintain hydration and urination, other health conditions, and access to reliable care—not on a temperature reading alone. WHO’s guidance describes these broad groups for clinical management; they are not a self-diagnosis tool.

Who should get individualized advice early?
Some circumstances can make dengue management more complicated. Contact a healthcare professional promptly for individualized advice if the person is pregnant, an infant, older, has obesity, diabetes, kidney failure, or chronic haemolytic disease, or faces barriers to reliable transport or access to care. Do not wait for a warning sign to seek advice in these situations.
What can you do while arranging care?
Rest, drink fluids, and follow medical advice. WHO advises paracetamol for fever and joint pain when appropriate, but advises against aspirin and ibuprofen because they can increase bleeding risk.
