To convert paper share certificates into demat holdings in India, open or use a demat account with a Depository Participant (DP), submit the DP’s Demat Request Form (DRF) with the original certificates, and wait for the issuer’s registrar to verify the request. Once confirmed, the equivalent securities are credited to your demat account. This converts the record format; it does not sell your shares.
Demat and physical shares: what changes?

Dematerialisation converts physical certificates into an equivalent electronic holding. It is an account service, not a sale or a change in the underlying number of securities. SEBI’s investor FAQ

What you need before starting
- A demat account with a DP. You can use an existing account if its holder details and ownership pattern match the paper certificates.
- The original certificates and the DP’s DRF.
- A separate DRF for each ISIN, as specified in SEBI’s FAQ.
- The issuer’s name and, if a certificate has an irregularity, the issuer’s RTA details so you can ask which service request applies.
The ownership pattern must match: for example, a certificate held jointly should correspond to a demat account with the same holders. If the holder configuration differs, ask the DP about the appropriate correction or service process before submitting a routine demat request. SEBI’s investor FAQ

How to dematerialise paper share certificates
- Check the certificate and identify the issuer. Confirm that the securities are eligible for dematerialisation. If the certificate is lost, damaged, disputed, or has stale holder details, contact the issuer or RTA about the correct service request; those cases may not follow the routine conversion path.
- Open or select your demat account. Use a DP and check that the names and ownership pattern match the certificate.
- Get and complete the DRF. Obtain the current form from your DP. Use a separate form for each ISIN.
- Submit the signed DRF and original certificates to your DP. Follow the DP’s current instructions for endorsements, submission and receipt; those operational requirements can vary.
- Allow the request to be verified. The DP sends the request through the depository, and the certificates and request go to the issuer’s registrar. The registrar checks the details and either confirms the request or raises an objection.
- Check the demat account after confirmation. Once the registrar confirms, the depository and DP update the electronic holding in your BO account.
SEBI describes this DP-to-depository-to-registrar sequence in its investor FAQ. Ask your DP about its current fees and expected processing time: the available official guidance does not establish one universal charge or completion deadline for ordinary dematerialisation.

If joint-holder names are in a different order
When the names on the certificate and demat account are the same but appear in a different order, ask the DP whether you can use transposition-cum-dematerialisation. SEBI Investor describes submitting the certificates, a Transposition Form and the DRF for this route. Confirm the current forms and requirements with your DP. When a service request is not an ordinary demat conversion
Requests involving matters such as duplicate certificates, transmission, transposition, or claims from unclaimed suspense accounts are distinct from the routine process of submitting existing certificates to a DP. SEBI’s January 30, 2026 circular sets a direct-credit process for specified service requests, following issuer or RTA due diligence and removal of objections. The required documents include a demat conversion request form and an attested Client Master List (CML) for the demat account, no more than two months old. SEBI says these provisions take effect on April 2, 2026. This process applies only to requests within the circular’s scope; it does not replace ordinary DP-submitted dematerialisation. What to do if the request is held up
- Ownership details do not match: Check the names and holder pattern on the certificate against the demat account, then ask the DP what correction or service route is accepted.
- Joint names are simply in a different order: Ask about transposition-cum-dematerialisation rather than treating the case as an ordinary mismatch.
- The certificate is lost, damaged or disputed: Contact the issuer or RTA before submitting a routine request. The appropriate process depends on the issue, and there is no single checklist that covers every case.
- The registrar raises an objection: Ask the DP or issuer/RTA for the specific reason and documents needed to resolve it; confirmation and credit occur only after the registrar accepts the request.
