Its strongest reasons to keep it are benefits you will actually use—especially the annual Companion Certificate and eligible checked-bag savings—not the face value of every advertised credit. The certificate is restricted, the bag benefits have separate eligibility rules, and the card’s screening credit covers either Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, not both in one four-year period.
What the card costs and earns

The basic cardmember receives one Companion Certificate after each account renewal, beginning in the second membership year. American Express describes eligible round-trip travel in Delta Main within the U.S. and to Mexico, the Caribbean, or Central America. The certificate may also cover the eligible flight portion of some Delta Vacations packages. It is not an unrestricted second ticket: eligible fare, route, travel dates, seat availability, and other terms apply, and Delta Basic experiences are excluded.

The exact amount depends on the itinerary, and the certificate has payment and expiration rules. Review the certificate terms and available flights before counting its value. The issuer’s Companion Certificate FAQ says it is issued in the renewal month starting in the second year of card membership; the benefits guide provides the eligibility and fee details.
Which checked bags are covered
The card advertises a free first checked bag on eligible Delta flights. Separately, the basic Platinum cardmember’s second checked bag is free on eligible domestic Delta flights. These are distinct benefits, not a promise of two free checked bags on every route.

The waiver is subject to the itinerary, operating carrier, check-in requirements, and any baggage allowance already attached to the ticket. Check the current baggage terms for every segment—particularly on international or mixed-carrier itineraries—rather than assuming the card covers bags throughout the trip. The American Express benefits guide sets out the restrictions.
What the TSA PreCheck and Global Entry credit covers
Once every four years, the card can provide one statement credit for a qualifying application fee: up to $85 for TSA PreCheck or up to $120 for Global Entry. You cannot receive both credits in the same period; the first qualifying application fee charged to the card determines which one applies. The credit reimburses an eligible fee through the qualifying process, not an approval decision. Global Entry approval includes TSA PreCheck access at no additional cost.

How to decide whether the $350 fee makes sense for you
There is no universal break-even amount: the card’s value depends on your routes, travel frequency, eligibility for the benefits, and what your SkyMiles redemptions are worth to you. Compare expected value you can realistically use against the $350 fee, rather than adding every advertised credit at face value.

- Estimate the certificate’s practical value. Identify a likely eligible round trip, check whether eligible fares and dates are available, and account for the companion’s taxes and fees and any fare restrictions.
- Count bag-fee savings only where they qualify. Use your actual Delta itineraries and bags, and apply the first- and second-bag rules separately.
- Include the screening credit only when usable. Count one qualifying Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application-fee credit in the four-year period when you expect to apply.
- Assess the remaining benefits on your own habits. Include credits only if you can use them under their terms without changing spending you would otherwise do.
- Weigh the result against the fee and alternatives. Consider whether another way of earning rewards or paying for your usual travel would serve you better, using your own redemption values rather than an assumed value for miles.
