Verdict: The De’Longhi Rivelia EXAM440.55 is most compelling for households that want one automatic machine to handle different beans, personal drink settings and hands-off milk drinks. Its two-hopper workflow is genuinely useful for switching between regular and decaffeinated coffee, but it is not instantaneous: the grinder must clear its remaining beans. Hot milk drinks are built in, while cold milk recipes require the optional LatteCrema Cool set. Published drink counts and even the model suffix vary by region, so verify the exact listing and bundle before buying.
What the Rivelia EXAM440.55 is
The Rivelia EXAM440.55 is a fully automatic bean-to-cup espresso machine in De’Longhi’s Rivelia range. It grinds whole beans, brews the drink and automates milk frothing rather than asking you to dose, tamp and steam manually. The European product page identifies the white model as EXAM440.55.W; the US listing uses EXAM44055W. Those are not merely cosmetic naming differences: the regional pages publish different recipe counts and may package the machine differently.

De’Longhi positions the machine around convenience and choice. You can keep two bean varieties available, save preferences for up to four people, and select drinks from a 3.5-inch colour touchscreen. The US specification also lists a 13-setting burr grinder, Bean Adapt guidance and a 19-bar pump. These are manufacturer specifications and feature claims, not independent measurements.

The European page lists two 250 g hoppers, while the US page expresses hopper capacity as 8.82 oz per hopper. Those figures are approximately equivalent, but the safest approach is to check the capacity and included hopper count on the page for your exact SKU. Colour suffixes, stock status, warranty and accessories can all be market-specific.
Why the interchangeable hoppers matter
Bean switching is the EXAM440.55’s clearest differentiator. Instead of emptying one large hopper by hand whenever you want decaf, De’Longhi says the European package includes two interchangeable 250 g hoppers. You can dedicate one to a regular blend and the other to decaf, or use separate light and dark roasts.
The important limitation is the grinder-clearing step. In switch mode, the machine clears coffee left in the grinder by making a final drink or grinding the remaining beans away. The first cup after a change can therefore contain some of the previous variety, depending on how much coffee remained in the grinder and which clearing option you use. This is normal for a shared grinder; the hoppers do not create two completely isolated bean paths.
How to change from regular to decaf
- Pause before the change. Decide whether you are willing to use the beans already in the grinder. If avoiding any mixture matters, plan the change when you can sacrifice a clearing dose.
- Select the machine’s switch mode. Use the on-screen bean or hopper-change control rather than simply lifting out a hopper while the machine is configured for the other one.
- Follow the clearing prompt. Rivelia’s process uses a final drink or a grinding operation to remove the beans still inside the grinder. The machine is not claiming to erase the old beans instantly.
- Install the second hopper and confirm it on screen. Check that the displayed bean selection matches the hopper you just fitted.
- Make the first cup with the expected carry-over in mind. If the first drink needs to be strictly decaf, run the clearing operation before serving it.
This arrangement is practical for households that change beans regularly, but it adds a handling step compared with leaving one blend loaded. It also does not turn pre-ground coffee into a third, effortless bean channel; check the exact regional manual if access to ground coffee is important to you, because the cited product pages do not establish that workflow.
Personalisation, profiles and the Bean Adapt system
The 3.5-inch colour touchscreen is the control centre. De’Longhi lists up to four profiles, allowing different users to save preferred drink choices rather than reselecting them each time. Profiles are useful when one person wants a shorter, stronger espresso and another prefers a larger milk drink, but the manufacturer pages do not define every setting that can be stored or whether all menu items support identical profile controls.
The US listing also describes Bean Adapt. It guides you through settings for the bean type so the machine can adjust its brewing configuration to the selected coffee. Treat that as guided setup, not an automatic guarantee of your preferred flavour. No independent evidence here establishes that Bean Adapt eliminates the need for taste-based adjustment, nor that it produces the same result with every roast.

A sensible setup sequence
- Fill the water tank and install the hopper containing the beans you intend to use first.
- Choose the on-screen bean setup and enter the information requested by Bean Adapt.
- Make a test drink and adjust your saved preference if the result is not to your taste.
- Save the drink to the appropriate profile so the next user does not overwrite your setting.
- Repeat the process when you introduce a substantially different roast; a setting that works for one bean is not proof that it suits another.
Because the US page lists 13 grinder settings, there is meaningful room for adjustment on that regional version. The cited European page does not publish a grinder-setting count, so do not assume every market’s controls are identical.

Drink menu: why the regional count matters
De’Longhi’s European page says the machine offers 16 one-touch drinks. The US listing says 18+ presets. Those figures should not be combined into a single universal menu claim: recipe availability can change with region, software, language, bundle and model suffix.
Before ordering, open the product page for your country and look at the actual on-screen menu or recipe list. Confirm that the drinks you care about—such as a flat white, cappuccino, latte macchiato or iced recipe—are present on that SKU. The manufacturer’s headline count is useful for orientation, but it is not a substitute for checking individual recipes.
Milk drinks: LatteCrema Hot is included, cold drinks are an upgrade
The LatteCrema Hot system automatically froths milk and provides a one-touch cleaning function after use, according to De’Longhi. The US listing says it can froth dairy milk and plant-based alternatives. That makes the machine a better fit for people who want cappuccino-style drinks without learning manual steam-wand technique.
LatteCrema Hot and LatteCrema Cool are separate considerations. The hot system is the included milk solution on the LatteCrema version. The LatteCrema Cool set is an optional upgrade; De’Longhi says it enables six cold milk-based drinks. Confirm that the retailer’s bundle includes the cool carafe or accessory and that it is compatible with your regional EXAM440.55 before paying for it.

It can offer cold coffee recipes when the relevant accessory and recipe are available, but the cited material does not establish a cold-brew extraction method. “Cold coffee” or an iced milk drink should not be read as a claim that the machine produces traditionally steeped cold brew. Check the individual recipe method and the accessory requirements for the exact model.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
If most of your drinks are hot espresso, the included LatteCrema Hot system may be all you need. If cold milk drinks are a central reason for buying, price the LatteCrema Cool set as part of the machine rather than assuming it is in the box.
Daily ownership and cleaning expectations
The Rivelia is designed to reduce routine intervention, not remove it. You still need to refill water, keep beans available and follow the machine’s cleaning prompts. The specific pages cited here confirm a one-touch cleaning function for the LatteCrema Hot system after use; they do not establish a complete schedule for descaling, water-filter replacement, grinder cleaning or internal maintenance.
- After a milk drink: use the milk system’s one-touch cleaning cycle as prompted.
- When changing beans: allow for grinder clearing rather than treating the hopper swap as instantaneous.
- For longer-term care: use the manual for your region to identify the correct filter, descaler, intervals and removable parts. Replacement part numbers and schedules are not established by the product pages cited here.
Do not infer long-term maintenance effort from the automatic cleaning button alone. No evidence here measures how much milk-system cleaning is required over months of use, how easy the internal components are to access, or how often the machine needs service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIndependent review evidence—and what it does not prove
The available independent evidence is limited. A TechRadar article dated 14 July 2026 recaps an earlier 2024 Rivelia review by Josephine Watson, which received five stars. TechRadar’s summary credits the Rivelia with consistently well-extracted espresso, useful Bean Adapt guidance and thick, creamy foam from LatteCrema Hot.
That article is a later secondary recap, and it discusses the Rivelia range rather than establishing a new, controlled test of the EXAM440.55 configuration. It is reasonable context for the machine’s intended experience, not proof of category-leading performance. The cited evidence does not establish reliability, repair rates, lifespan, noise, drink-temperature consistency, repeatability across beans or the long-term burden of cleaning.
Size, placement and practical fit
For the US version, De’Longhi lists dimensions of 17 inches high, 9.75 inches wide and 14.75 inches deep, with a product weight of 21.39 lb. Measure the counter and the clearance above it before buying. A machine can fit within the stated footprint while still being awkward to refill if a cabinet blocks the top or if the hopper cannot be removed comfortably.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The US water tank is listed at 47.34 oz. Actual refill frequency depends on drink size, rinsing and milk use, so the capacity alone does not predict how many cups your household will make between fills. The European page does not publish a corresponding tank figure in the supplied information.

Who should buy it?
Choose it if you regularly rotate beans
The two-hopper design is strongest for a home that alternates between regular and decaffeinated coffee or keeps multiple blends in use. You gain a cleaner workflow than storing one variety in a single hopper, provided you accept the grinder-clearing step.
Choose it if several people want different drinks
Four profiles and a touchscreen make shared use more convenient than repeatedly rebuilding each drink. This is especially useful when drink size, strength and milk preference vary between users.
Choose it if automatic milk is a priority
LatteCrema Hot handles frothing and offers a one-touch cleaning action. It is suited to people who want milk drinks without manual steaming, while still requiring normal milk-system care.
Look elsewhere or budget carefully if cold drinks are the main attraction
Cold milk drinks require the optional LatteCrema Cool set according to De’Longhi. Include that accessory and its compatibility in the total cost, and verify the recipe list for your region.
Be cautious if you need proven long-term reliability
The available evidence does not cover lifespan, service rates or repeated performance over time. Those are unresolved buying questions rather than strengths you can safely assume from the feature list.

How to compare the Rivelia with another automatic machine
A meaningful comparison should use the same criteria rather than relying on a larger recipe number or a pump-pressure headline. Check each candidate against this list:
- Counter fit: compare width, depth, height and the clearance needed to remove the hopper or water tank.
- Bean changes: determine whether there are separate hoppers, how much purging is required and whether old beans remain in the grinder.
- Milk workflow: check whether automatic frothing is included, what the cleaning cycle does and whether plant-based alternatives are supported.
- Cold drinks: establish whether recipes are included in the base machine or require an accessory; verify the preparation method rather than assuming “iced” means cold brew.
- Personalisation: compare profile count, grinder adjustments and how clearly the interface explains bean setup.
- Maintenance: read the regional manual for filters, descaling, removable parts and required cleaning intervals.
- Ownership terms: compare local price, warranty, stock and the exact contents of the box, since regional bundles can differ.
No same-condition head-to-head test is established for the EXAM440.55, so there is no evidence-based category winner to declare. The right choice depends on whether bean switching, automatic hot milk or cold-drink capability is the feature you will use most.
Pros and limitations
| Strengths | Limitations and cautions |
|---|---|
| Two interchangeable 250 g hoppers are listed for the European model. | Changing beans requires clearing coffee remaining in the grinder. |
| Up to four profiles and a 3.5-inch colour touchscreen support shared use. | Published menu counts differ: 16 one-touch drinks in Europe versus 18+ presets in the US. |
| LatteCrema Hot automates milk frothing and offers one-touch cleaning. | LatteCrema Cool is an optional upgrade, not a standard inclusion. |
| US listing includes Bean Adapt and a 13-setting burr grinder. | Bean Adapt is guidance, not independently proven flavour optimisation. |
| Fully automatic fresh-bean drink preparation. | Independent evidence does not establish reliability, noise or long-term cleaning burden. |
Buying checklist for the exact SKU
- Match the model code to your market: EXAM440.55.W appears on the European listing, while EXAM44055W appears on the US listing.
- Confirm the colour suffix and whether two interchangeable hoppers are in the box.
- Read the regional drink menu instead of relying on the other market’s 16 or 18+ figure.
- Decide whether you need only LatteCrema Hot or also the optional LatteCrema Cool set.
- Measure the counter, overhead clearance and access to the water tank and hopper.
- Check the local warranty, stock status and bundle contents; these commercial details can change.
- Keep the regional manual available for maintenance instructions that are not specified on the product page.
At access time, the European listing showed the white model out of stock, while the US listing displayed a price. Both availability and pricing are volatile, so treat those page states as temporary rather than permanent specifications.
Final assessment
The Rivelia EXAM440.55 makes the most sense as a convenience-led bean-to-cup machine whose standout feature is controlled switching between two bean varieties. Its touchscreen, four-user personalisation and automatic LatteCrema Hot system round out a strong everyday workflow. The trade-offs are equally clear: the grinder must be purged when beans change, cold milk drinks need an optional accessory, regional pages disagree on the published menu count, and independent evidence does not yet answer long-term reliability questions.
If those conditions fit your household, the Rivelia’s feature set is coherent and practical. If you want cold brew specifically, zero carry-over between beans or proven durability data, verify the recipe method and bundle first and treat those requirements as reasons to compare other machines.
