Verdict up front: the De’Longhi Magnifica Start ECAM220.31.SB is a compact automatic bean-to-cup machine for espresso-style coffee, with an integrated grinder, a choice of four named coffee recipes and a traditional manual milk frother. It is a sensible fit if you want freshly ground coffee at the press of a button and do not mind steaming and texturing milk yourself. It is not an all-in-one automatic milk-drink system, and the manufacturer’s specifications and manual cannot establish its taste, speed, noise, reliability or value without independent hands-on testing.
What the Magnifica Start ECAM220.31.SB is
The ECAM220.31.SB is De’Longhi’s silver-finish Magnifica Start automatic coffee maker. It grinds whole beans, doses and brews coffee automatically, and also accepts pre-ground coffee. Soft-touch controls select the drink and expose settings for personalization. A traditional steam wand, rather than an automatic milk carafe, handles milk.

De’Longhi’s official listing names four coffee recipes: Coffee, Doppio+, Espresso and Long. The same listing describes five one-touch selections when steam is counted, so steam is a separate function, not a fifth coffee recipe. The machine can also dispense hot water through the frother.

Drinks and milk workflow
Four coffee recipes
| Selection | What it represents | What the machine does |
|---|---|---|
| Espresso | A short espresso-style coffee | Grinds beans (or doses pre-ground coffee), brews and dispenses automatically. |
| Coffee | A longer black coffee | Uses the automatic brewing cycle for a larger drink than espresso. |
| Long | A still longer coffee profile | Runs the programmed long-coffee recipe. |
| Doppio+ | A stronger, larger double-style coffee | Runs De’Longhi’s Doppio+ recipe; the exact liquid volume depends on the programmed setting and cup. |
The listing does not establish a fixed millilitre volume for each recipe, nor does it claim that the drinks match a café’s recipe. Treat the names as machine programs rather than guaranteed café-style standards.
Steam, hot water and milk
The fifth one-touch option is steam. To make a cappuccino, latte or similar drink, you brew coffee, purge and heat the manual frother, then place a milk jug under the wand and introduce air until the milk reaches the texture and temperature you want. You pour that milk into the coffee yourself. The machine therefore supports milk drinks, but it does not automatically draw, heat and dispense milk at the press of a single milk-drink button.
The frother can also provide hot water. Because the same outlet is used for steam and hot water, follow the manual’s purge and cleaning instructions to prevent milk residue from remaining in the system.
Counter space, capacity and electrical requirements

| Specification | Published value | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Width × depth × height | 240 × 440 × 350 mm | Allow roughly 24 cm of side-to-side width and 44 cm of front-to-back depth, plus clearance to open the service areas and fill containers. |
| Water tank | 1.8 L | Refills are less frequent than with a small single-serve brewer, but actual cups per fill vary with drink size, rinsing and steam use. |
| Bean container | 250 g | Holds a substantial quantity of whole beans; consumption depends on dose and the number of drinks. |
| Maximum cup height | 140 mm | Check the height of your travel mug or glass before buying; a tall vessel may not fit beneath the outlet. |
| Pump pressure | 15 bar | A published pump specification, not a guarantee of extraction quality in the cup. |
| Power | 1450 W | Use a suitable outlet for the machine’s electrical rating. |
| Voltage | 220–240 V | Do not assume compatibility in regions using a different mains voltage. |
| Weight | 8.99 kg on the product page; 8.8 kg in the manual | The documents differ slightly; confirm the exact regional unit if shipping weight or a comparison matters. |
The 44 cm depth is easy to underestimate. Leave enough room to remove the water tank, access the infuser and open the bean hopper. Keep the top and sides reachable rather than wedging the machine beneath a low shelf.
Whole beans, pre-ground coffee and adjustments
Using whole beans
Fill the bean container with espresso-suitable whole beans, select a recipe and let the integrated grinder dose the brew. The manual recommends coffee intended for espresso machines. It also warns that an opened pack can lose flavour when it has been open too long, so keep beans sealed and use them while fresh.
Using pre-ground coffee
The ECAM220.31.SB can brew pre-ground coffee. This is useful for decaffeinated coffee, a different roast, or an occasional cup without emptying the hopper. Follow the manual’s dosing instructions and add grounds only when the machine prompts you; adding too much or adding it at the wrong stage can cause a failed cycle or a blocked path.
What you can personalize
De’Longhi says the machine allows aroma and temperature personalization. The controls let you select the desired strength or aroma level and adjust the beverage setting available for that recipe. Temperature choice changes the programmed brewing preference; it does not make the machine a manual espresso setup.

The grinder has an adjustment mechanism. Make changes in small steps while the grinder is operating as directed, then brew at least two coffees before judging the result. The manual says the effect of a change may take two or more coffees to appear because old grounds remain in the pathway.
First-time setup: a practical sequence
Use the supplied manual for the exact button symbols and regional language. The following order reflects the manufacturer’s setup and commissioning guidance.
- Position the machine. Put it on a stable, level, water-resistant surface with access to the tank, bean hopper, drip tray and infuser.
- Check the electrical rating. The product listing specifies 220–240 V. Connect it only to a compatible supply.
- Rinse and fill the water tank. Use fresh drinking water and keep the tank below its maximum mark. Refit it fully so the machine can draw water.
- Fill the bean container. Use whole beans suitable for espresso machines. If you intend to use pre-ground coffee, leave the bean hopper as directed and use the dedicated pre-ground procedure instead.
- Switch on and follow the startup prompts. The machine performs initial rinsing and heating. Place a container under the outlets to catch water.
- Set the local water hardness. Use the supplied hardness test procedure, if included, and enter the result in the machine. This setting controls when the machine requests descaling.
- Fit a water-softener filter if you use one. Confirm that the filter is compatible with your regional model and follow the manual’s soaking and installation instructions. The exact replacement-filter part number was not established in the available documentation.
- Make the commissioning coffees. De’Longhi says that four or five coffees may be needed before the machine begins giving satisfactory results on first use. Those early cups are part of priming and calibration, not a reliable performance test.
- Set your preferred aroma and temperature. Adjust one variable at a time so you can tell what changed.
- Dial in the grinder gradually. If the coffee is running too quickly or tastes weak, make a small adjustment and wait at least two coffees before making another change.
How to prepare a milk drink
- Choose and brew Espresso, Coffee or another recipe into a cup that fits under the outlet.
- Pour cold milk into a suitable metal jug, leaving room for expansion.
- Select steam and wait until the machine indicates that steam is ready.
- Purge the wand briefly according to the manual, then place its tip just below the milk surface.
- Introduce air until the milk expands, then lower the tip slightly to create a smooth whirlpool.
- Stop before the milk overheats, close to the temperature you prefer, and wipe and purge the wand immediately.
- Pour the textured milk into the coffee and rinse the jug.
This process gives you control over foam, but it requires practice and an extra preparation step. Anyone seeking one-button cappuccinos should look for a model with an automatic milk system instead.
Cleaning, filter care and descaling
After each milk session
Wipe the frother immediately, purge it as instructed and remove any milk residue from the tip. Dried milk can obstruct the outlet and create a hygiene problem.

Routine removable-part cleaning
Empty and rinse the drip tray when indicated and clean the coffee-grounds container. The manual also instructs owners to remove and rinse the infuser at the prescribed intervals. Refit parts only when they are dry where the instructions require it, and make sure each component locks into place.
Water filter and hardness setting
The manual describes an optional water-softener filter and a filter-replacement indicator. Replace the filter when the machine requests it, using a part confirmed for your exact model and region. Even with a filter installed, keep the hardness setting accurate so the descaling schedule reflects your water supply.
Descaling
Run the built-in descaling cycle when prompted and use a coffee-machine descaler that the instructions and regional support materials identify as compatible. The cycle requires the tank to be filled with the prepared solution, a large container under the outlets and enough time for repeated rinse stages. Do not interrupt the cycle unless the manual tells you how to recover.

Troubleshooting the symptoms De’Longhi documents
| Symptom | Manufacturer-listed possible cause | Action to try |
|---|---|---|
| Coffee is weak or lacks crema | Grind is too coarse or the coffee is unsuitable. | Use espresso-suitable coffee and make a small finer-grind adjustment. Brew at least two cups before evaluating the change. |
| Coffee comes out very slowly | Grind is too fine. | Move the grinder a small step coarser while following the adjustment procedure. |
| Milk frother produces poor steam | Residue or a blocked tip can restrict steam. | Clean and purge the frother, then repeat the steam procedure. |
| Descaling requests seem frequent | Water hardness is set too high for the supply, or the machine is used heavily. | Verify the hardness measurement and setting; do not disable descaling prompts. |
| Water or grounds appear where expected | A removable component may not be seated correctly, or a rinse cycle may have run. | Switch off as directed, remove and refit the tray, grounds container and infuser, then check for an obstruction. |
These are troubleshooting directions from the manual, not controlled findings about every user’s coffee. If the machine still reports an error after the documented checks, use De’Longhi’s model-specific support channel rather than repeatedly forcing a cycle.
What the official material does not prove
There is no independent tasting panel, laboratory extraction measurement, noise test, durability study, customer survey or comparative value analysis in the sources used for this review. Consequently, it would be unjustified to claim a particular flavour profile, brewing speed, operating noise, long-term reliability or superiority over another machine.
The published 15-bar figure is the pump specification only. It does not by itself establish the pressure at the coffee puck or the quality of the extraction. Likewise, the 1.8-litre and 250-gram capacities do not translate into a fixed number of cups because drink size, rinsing, steam and grinder dose all change consumption.
Who should consider it
Good fit
- You want whole-bean grinding and automatic black-coffee preparation in one appliance.
- You mainly drink espresso-style coffee, Coffee, Long or Doppio+ and want those recipes available from dedicated controls.
- You are willing to learn manual milk steaming instead of paying for an automatic milk carafe.
- You have space for a machine approximately 24 cm wide and 44 cm deep and can use a 220–240 V supply.
- You are comfortable emptying, rinsing, filtering and descaling the machine on schedule.
Look elsewhere if
- Every milk drink must be fully automatic with no jug, steam wand or manual pouring.
- You need a very tall travel mug above the listed 140 mm cup clearance.
- Your electrical supply is outside the listed voltage range and no approved regional version is available.
- You want independently measured data on taste, noise, speed or lifespan before buying.
Price, availability and warranty checks
The regional De’Longhi store page accessed on 13 October 2026 showed the model as out of stock. That status can change and should not be treated as worldwide availability. Check that a listing identifies the exact ECAM220.31.SB suffix, the correct regional voltage, included accessories and local service arrangements.
The accessed regional listing stated a two-year included warranty. Warranty coverage, exclusions and registration requirements are market-specific, so confirm the terms with the seller in the country where you will use the machine. If you are comparing prices, compare those local warranty and service conditions as well as the headline amount.
Bottom line
The De’Longhi Magnifica Start ECAM220.31.SB is best understood as an automatic bean grinder and coffee brewer paired with a hands-on steam wand. Its documented strengths are the four named coffee programs, pre-ground compatibility, aroma and temperature personalization, a 1.8-litre tank, a 250-gram bean hopper and a relatively narrow 240 mm body. Its defining trade-off is the manual milk workflow and the owner’s responsibility for cleaning, filtration and descaling. Decide on those two points first; the official documentation alone cannot supply a verdict on flavour, noise, speed, reliability or value.
