DeLonghi Magnifica S ECAM22.110.SB review: the short verdict
The ECAM22.110.SB makes the most sense as an entry-level bean-to-cup machine for black-coffee drinkers who value repeatable button-operated preparation more than a large recipe menu. It handles the grinding, dosing and brewing automatically, offers adjustable aroma and quantity settings, and can make a twin espresso or use pre-ground coffee. The trade-off is the milk system: the supplied traditional frother is manual, so every cappuccino-style drink requires a separate steaming and texturing step.

That distinction matters more than the advertised 15-bar figure. The pressure is a manufacturer specification, not an independently measured extraction result, and no public overall CHOICE score or detailed test breakdown was visible on the page reviewed. The available evidence supports a clear description of the machine and its workflow, but not a claim about its taste, temperature consistency or long-term reliability. Anyone considering one should verify local stock, the exact suffix, warranty coverage and included accessories before paying.
DeLonghi’s product page describes the fresh-grinding process as: “The machine grinds the perfect amount of beans right before brewing.” That is a manufacturer claim about the operating principle, not an independent assessment of cup quality.

What the machine can make
Espresso and espresso lungo from bean controls
The named coffee drinks on the manufacturer listing are espresso and espresso lungo. Dedicated controls start the grinder and brewing cycle, while aroma and quantity settings let the owner adjust strength and volume within the machine’s programmed range. A twin-shot function can prepare two espresso portions together, subject to the cup arrangement and the machine’s cycle.
Hot water and steam
The hot-water outlet is intended for tea, infusions or other hot-water uses. Steam is supplied through the same traditional frothing system used for milk. Because steam and hot water are listed separately from the espresso menu, the ECAM22.110.SB should not be described as automatically producing named milk recipes such as latte macchiato or flat white.
Pre-ground coffee option
A bypass route accepts pre-ground coffee. This is useful for decaffeinated beans or when a different roast is needed for one drink without emptying the hopper. The exact dose and selection procedure should be followed in the regional quick guide, because button labels and prompts can vary by market.
How an everyday coffee cycle works
- Fill the water circuit. Remove and fill the 1.8-litre water container, then seat it fully. Leave room for the tank to slide out without hitting a wall or cabinet.
- Add beans. Fill the bean hopper with whole coffee beans. Do not put beans into the pre-ground chute.
- Power on and allow the rinse cycle. Automatic machines commonly rinse during startup; place a cup or container under the outlets if the manual instructs you to do so.
- Select aroma or strength. Set the variable coffee-strength control before starting the drink. A stronger setting normally uses more ground coffee rather than creating a different beverage.
- Choose espresso or espresso lungo. Position one or two cups under the coffee spouts and press the relevant button. The machine grinds and brews automatically.
- Adjust the quantity if needed. If the programmed volume is too short or too large, use the quantity-customization procedure in the exact manual. Save settings only after confirming the required button sequence.
- Empty waste when prompted. Used grounds fall into the grounds container, while rinse water collects in the drip tray. The machine’s indicator lights determine when either needs attention.
This workflow is simpler than weighing and tamping each shot, but it is not maintenance-free. Rinsing, emptying and periodic descaling remain part of ownership.

Manual milk frothing: the main buying trade-off
The ECAM22.110.SB does not include an automatic milk carafe. Its traditional frother requires the user to hold a milk jug, introduce steam and stop at the desired temperature and texture. DeLonghi describes it as a “Traditional milk frother to easily prepare a creamy milk foam for your favourite milk beverages, or make hot water for tea or infusions.” That wording explains the capability, but it does not mean the machine will prepare a complete cappuccino without supervision.
A practical frothing sequence
- Pour cold milk into a suitable jug, leaving expansion room.
- Switch the control to steam and wait for the machine to indicate that steam is ready.
- Purge a small amount of condensation if the regional manual directs you to do so.
- Place the frother tip just below the milk surface to introduce air, then lower it slightly to create a smooth whirlpool.
- Stop steaming before the milk overheats, close to the temperature recommended in the manual, and wipe the wand immediately.
- Run the specified cleaning or purge cycle through the frother after use.
The result depends on technique, milk volume and cleaning. Buyers who expect one-touch cappuccinos should choose a machine with an automatic milk system instead; that comparison cannot be scored here because no competing model was researched to the same standard.

The manufacturer dimensions can look inconsistent with CHOICE’s figures because the former are presented without orientation and the latter explicitly use height × width × depth. Treat them as approximately 23–24 cm wide, 34–35 cm high and 43 cm deep, while confirming the exact regional manual or product label before designing cabinetry.

Counter space, capacity and electrical requirements
At roughly 43 cm deep, the machine may need more front-to-back space than its compact marketing suggests. Measure the counter with the water tank, drip tray and grounds container pulled out, not just the body. Leave enough overhead clearance to remove the bean-hopper lid and enough side or front clearance to lift the water tank and empty waste.
- Water: 1.8 litres according to DeLonghi and CHOICE. Frequent milk drinks, rinsing and hot-water use consume capacity faster than the espresso volume alone suggests.
- Grounds: DeLonghi lists a 14-serving grounds-container capacity. This is a manufacturer capacity figure, not a guaranteed number of drinks between emptying alerts.
- Pump: 15 bar stated pressure. It should be read as a pump specification, not proof that every cup is extracted at 15 bar.
- Power: 1,450 W at 220–240 V. Check the rating plate and local electrical requirements before importing a machine.
- Weight: 9.299 kg on DeLonghi’s page; CHOICE rounds it to 9 kg.
The dimensions, voltage and warranty make the regional version important. A machine intended for 220–240 V should not be connected to an incompatible supply, and a warranty may not travel with an imported unit.
Setup and adjustments supported by the manufacturer

Grind adjustment changes how quickly water passes through the coffee bed. Make changes only in the circumstances and direction specified by the manual, generally while the grinder is operating. Turning the dial arbitrarily or making several changes at once can make it difficult to identify the effect.

Water filter
DeLonghi lists a water filter as applicable to the machine. The filter can reduce the mineral load entering the water circuit, but the exact replacement part and availability depend on region. Confirm the compatible SKU through the local support page rather than buying a generic filter on the assumption that all versions fit.
Aroma and quantity programming
Use the strength control for aroma and the machine’s programming sequence for beverage quantity. Record the original setting before experimenting so it can be restored if a customized volume is unsatisfactory.
Cleaning, descaling and routine ownership
Automatic brewing does not eliminate cleaning. Coffee oils, milk residue and mineral deposits affect hygiene and operation if they are ignored.
After each milk use
- Wipe the outside of the frother immediately so milk cannot dry on the metal.
- Purge and rinse the milk path exactly as the regional manual specifies.
- Remove any detachable frother parts that the manual identifies as washable and allow them to dry fully.
Daily or frequent tasks
- Empty the drip tray before it reaches the machine’s full indicator.
- Empty and rinse the grounds container when prompted.
- Rinse the water tank with fresh water and refill it rather than leaving stale water for long periods.
- Wipe coffee residue from the dispensing area.
Periodic tasks
The removable drip-tray grid is listed as dishwasher-safe on DeLonghi’s product page. That does not automatically make every tray component or frother part dishwasher-safe; use the manual’s component-by-component instructions.

Descaling frequency depends on water hardness, filter use and local instructions. No universal interval was established for every region, so follow the exact ECAM22.110.SB manual and the machine’s indicator prompts. Use only the descaler specified for the model or an explicitly compatible product. Interrupting a descaling cycle or using an unsuitable chemical can leave residue or cause faults.

CHOICE lists the reviewed Australian package as including the machine, a water-hardness tester, measuring spoon, water filter, descaler and instructional DVD. This is CHOICE’s listing for that package, not a guarantee for every retailer or country. A newer regional box may replace the DVD with digital instructions, omit a filter or include different paperwork.
Potentially useful optional items are ordinary whole beans, a compatible replacement water filter, the descaler specified by the manual and a milk pitcher for manual frothing. None should be treated as universally required purchases until the local manual and box contents are checked.
Independent evidence: what CHOICE does and does not show
CHOICE has a dedicated page titled “DeLonghi Magnifica S ECAM 22.110.SB review”. Visible information includes the 1.8-litre reservoir, manual frothing, variable coffee-strength setting, stated 15-bar pressure, a 24-month warranty and Australian “Discontinued model” availability. The page also shows $849, but that figure is tied to the market and date of the listing and should not be presented as a current purchase price.
CHOICE’s expert rating, taste-test results, ease-of-use assessment, milk-frothing findings, temperature-consistency results and product pros and cons were member-only on the page inspected. The existence of a test page is therefore not evidence of a particular score. No public named sales, reliability, longevity or comparative-performance statistic was available for quotation, and no hands-on test was conducted for this article.

Who should buy the ECAM22.110.SB?
It suits buyers who:
- Mostly drink espresso or lungo and want beans ground immediately before brewing.
- Prefer pressing a button to dosing and tamping manually.
- Are comfortable learning a steam wand for occasional cappuccino-style drinks.
- Need a pre-ground bypass for decaffeinated coffee.
- Have counter space for a machine approximately 43 cm deep and can meet the local voltage requirement.
Look elsewhere if you need:
- One-touch cappuccino, latte or flat-white preparation.
- A broad menu of automatically programmed milk beverages.
- A verified independent score before purchase; the public CHOICE page does not expose the relevant results.
- Guaranteed current stock or a globally valid warranty.
Buying checklist for a used, old-stock or imported machine
- Confirm the full code. Match ECAM22.110.SB, including punctuation and suffix, against the seller’s label and manual. Similar Magnifica names do not guarantee identical voltage or controls.
- Check local stock status. The manufacturer’s English-language page was out of stock when checked, and CHOICE marks the Australian listing discontinued. Neither statement proves worldwide unavailability.
- Get the warranty in writing. CHOICE shows 24 months for its listing, but regional warranty terms, authorized-service coverage and importer support can differ.
- Verify voltage. The published specification is 220–240 V and 1,450 W. Do not assume an imported unit is suitable for local mains power.
- Inspect included parts. Ask whether the box contains the water filter, hardness tester, measuring spoon, descaler and current instructions; CHOICE’s Australian package list may not match another market.
- Price the maintenance path. Confirm access to the model-compatible filter and approved descaler before treating a low purchase price as a bargain.
- Measure the installation area. Allow room to remove the tank, tray and grounds container, plus overhead clearance for the hopper.
Bottom line on value
The DeLonghi Magnifica S ECAM22.110.SB is a straightforward automatic espresso machine whose value depends on the buyer’s tolerance for manual milk work and the local price. Its documented strengths are fresh-bean grinding, simple espresso and lungo controls, adjustable strength and volume, twin-shot brewing and a pre-ground option. Its defining limitation is equally clear: the frother is traditional and manual.
