Verdict first: the De’Longhi Icona Capitals CTOC4003.Y (also written CTOC4003Y) is a four-slot toaster in New York Yellow with six browning levels, separate controls for each pair of slots, and bagel, defrost, reheat and cancel functions. It is a well-specified family toaster on paper, but the public evidence does not establish a score-based recommendation for this exact yellow model. De’Longhi’s UK pages showed a £114.99 price in an indexed snapshot, while stock information conflicted, so check a live seller before buying.
What the CTOC4003Y is
The model name identifies the yellow version of De’Longhi’s Icona Capitals four-slice toaster. De’Longhi styles it as CTOC4003.Y; some listings omit the dot and use CTOC4003Y. The same UK range includes London Blue (CTOC4003.BL) and Sydney White (CTOC4003.W). Confirm the suffix and colour before ordering: colour variants can have separate listings, and independent test information is not interchangeable automatically.

The basic proposition is capacity and flexibility. Four slots let you toast a family batch at once, while two independent control panels allow each side of the toaster to run a different setting. De’Longhi specifies six progressive browning positions and four dedicated functions: bagel, defrost, reheat and cancel.
Those are manufacturer features, not a guarantee of evenly browned toast. The accessible independent pages confirm that the yellow model was tested by CHOICE, but the rating and individual scores are restricted to members. No public result supports calling the CTOC4003Y a tested winner.

What a four-slot layout changes in daily use
A four-slot toaster is most useful when several people eat at once or when you want to prepare toast and another item in the same batch. The two control panels are the important distinction here. Rather than forcing all four slots to use one dial, the toaster is designed so each pair can be set separately. One pair can be lighter for a child while the other is darker, or one pair can use a different function.
That flexibility does not necessarily mean every slot can be programmed individually. De’Longhi describes dual independent controls, so treat the appliance as two two-slot sections unless the manual says otherwise. If you usually make only one slice, a four-slot model may use more counter space than necessary; if you regularly make three or four slices, the extra capacity can avoid running successive cycles.
Four slots also create more crumbs and a larger heated surface than a compact two-slot toaster. Leave clearance around the body, keep the area above it unobstructed and avoid storing it immediately beneath low cabinets while it is operating. The yellow finish is a visual choice as much as a specification, so check that the colour shown in a retailer’s photograph matches the New York Yellow suffix.

The electrical figures are nameplate specifications, not measurements of actual energy use or heating speed. A 1,800 W appliance on a 220–240 V supply draws substantial power while operating, so use a suitable UK socket and avoid sharing an overloaded extension lead.
For a rough running-cost comparison, multiply 1.8 kW by the number of hours the toaster is actually heating, then apply your electricity tariff. A short toast cycle uses far less energy than leaving the appliance powered continuously, but the published 1,800 W figure does not tell you the exact duration or consumption of a particular programme.
How the controls work
Six browning levels
The six-position dial provides a progressive range from light to dark. “Progressive” describes the control system; it does not mean every slice will receive identical colour under all conditions. Bread thickness, moisture, sugar content and whether the bread is frozen can change the result. Start at a middle setting, inspect the first batch and adjust one position at a time.
Keep notes for the bread you buy most often. A dense seeded loaf, a thin white slice and a sweet brioche-style bread can brown at different rates even when they are the same size. If you change from fresh to frozen bread, begin with a conservative setting and use the defrost function rather than assuming the previous dial position will transfer perfectly.

Independent controls for two pairs of slots
Each control panel operates a pair of slots. This is useful when two people want different browning levels or when one pair is reheating while the other is toasting. It also means you can run fewer than four slices without committing both sides to the same programme. Independent operation is a functional advantage over a single-control four-slot toaster, but the public sources do not publish comparative timing or evenness measurements.

Before a busy breakfast, identify which lever and dial belong to each pair. Loading both sides and then adjusting the wrong control is an easy mistake on any split-control toaster. If one side finishes first, use its cancel button rather than reaching into the slots or trying to stop the mechanism by hand.
Bagel mode
Bagel mode is intended for bagels rather than ordinary sliced bread. Insert the bagel according to the diagram supplied with the appliance, with the cut face oriented as instructed, then select the desired browning level. Because the exact heating pattern is a design feature rather than an independently scored result in the public material, check the first bagel and adjust from there.
Bagels are thicker than standard sliced bread, so do not force one into a slot or use a damaged item that can shed large pieces. If a bagel does not rise freely, cancel the cycle and wait for the toaster to cool before attempting removal.
Defrost and reheat
Use defrost for bread taken directly from a freezer. Reheat is for warming already toasted bread without starting a full browning cycle. These functions are separate from the six browning positions: select the relevant button, then choose a sensible browning level where the control layout requires one.
Defrost is not a substitute for checking the bread after the first cycle. Frozen slices vary in thickness and ice content. Reheat is likewise a warming function, not a way to crisp a slice that has gone completely cold; use a normal toast cycle if you need fresh browning.
Cancel
Cancel stops the cycle early. Use it if the colour is already right, if a slice is caught, or if you selected the wrong programme. Never insert a knife or other metal object to retrieve bread while the toaster is connected to power; unplug it first and allow it to cool.
Small slices, crumb removal and everyday handling
Extra-lift position
De’Longhi says, “The exclusive extra-lift position is designed for easy and safe removal of small slices.” This is the manufacturer’s description of the design purpose, not a third-party safety test. Raise the lever fully before reaching for a short slice, and keep fingers away from the slots and heating elements.

Removable crumb tray
The crumb tray is intended to contain loose debris and make routine cleaning easier. Unplug the toaster, wait until it is completely cool, pull out the tray, empty it into a bin and wipe it before replacing it. Do not immerse the toaster body in water, pour liquid into the slots or use abrasive cleaners on the finish. Frequent emptying reduces accumulated crumbs, but it does not remove the need to keep the surrounding worktop clear.
Clean the tray often if you toast seeded bread, pastries or heavily crumbed items. A full tray can spill when the toaster is moved. Check that it is fully seated after cleaning; operating the toaster with a loose tray can allow crumbs onto the work surface.
Dimensions and slot fit: what is and is not confirmed
Which? lists slot dimensions of 14.1 × 3.3 × 12.4 cm and a 72 cm cable for the related blue CTOC4003.BL variant. Those figures are useful planning references, but they are not confirmed specifications for the yellow CTOC4003.Y. If your bread is unusually thick, long or artisan-shaped, verify the seller’s measurements for the exact suffix before purchase.
Slot dimensions alone do not predict performance. A slice can fit physically yet toast unevenly if it is positioned off-centre or extends above the heating area. For oversized bread, use the first cycle to check coverage rather than assuming the maximum listed dimension guarantees uniform browning.
The listed cable length for the blue model is also a planning reference rather than a guarantee for the yellow one. Measure the distance to your socket and leave enough slack for safe positioning without stretching the lead across a hot surface or walkway.
Independent testing and what the public evidence can support
CHOICE listing for the yellow model
CHOICE lists the CTOC4003Y in its expert toaster testing. Its test categories include performance, evenness, consistency, cleaning, safety and ease of use, but the accessible page hides the overall rating and scores behind membership. The listing also shows an Australian price of A$209, a one-year warranty and China as the country of origin. Those are Australian listing details and should not be applied to a UK purchase without checking the local seller’s terms.
The existence of a test entry is still useful: it shows that the exact yellow model was evaluated within that service. It does not reveal whether it scored well or poorly in any category. Do not infer a ranking from the product’s presence on the site, and do not quote the Australian price as a UK deal.

Which? lists the blue CTOC4003.BL, not the yellow model, and associates it with a 2013–2019 testing programme. Which? warns that results from that programme should not be directly compared with tests conducted before December 2013 or after September 2019. The colour and suffix difference, plus the dated programme, make this a useful reference for features and dimensions only—not proof of CTOC4003Y performance.

Test methods can change between programme periods, so even a score for the blue version would need careful context. Treat variant identity and test date as part of the evidence, just as important as the number itself.
What cannot honestly be claimed
- There is no publicly visible score for the exact yellow model in the accessible CHOICE listing.
- No public source supplied here establishes a measured browning-evenness, speed or single-slice result for CTOC4003Y.
- The presence of a CHOICE test listing does not by itself make the toaster a winner or a best buy.
- Blue-variant data should not be presented as yellow-variant test performance.
- The six-position dial and 1,800 W rating do not prove faster heating, lower energy use or better toast than a competing model.
Using the toaster for the first time
- Verify the label. Check that the box or product page says CTOC4003.Y or CTOC4003Y and New York Yellow.
- Inspect the appliance. Look for transit damage, a clean crumb tray and an undamaged cable and plug before connecting it.
- Position it safely. Set the toaster on a stable, dry, heat-resistant surface with clearance around the sides and above the slots. Keep it away from curtains and other flammable materials.
- Inspect the controls. Identify the two independent panels, six browning positions and the bagel, defrost, reheat and cancel buttons.
- Run a first batch at a middle setting. Bread varies, so use an initial cycle to establish the right level for your loaf rather than choosing the darkest setting immediately.
- Adjust one side independently. If one pair is too light or dark, change only that panel for the next cycle.
- Use the extra lift for short pieces. Raise the lever fully, but do not touch the metal interior.
- Watch the first frozen or bagel cycle. Confirm that the food rises freely and that the selected mode gives the result you expect.
- Finish with a cool-down and crumb check. Unplug when the toaster is not in use, let it cool and empty the crumb tray regularly.
Common pitfalls
- Buying the wrong colour suffix: CTOC4003.BL and CTOC4003.W are different listings from CTOC4003.Y.
- Assuming all four slots share one setting: confirm which controls operate each pair before loading the toaster.
- Treating the price snapshot as current: stock and price changed between indexed De’Longhi pages.
- Using blue-variant measurements as guaranteed yellow specifications: verify exact-model dimensions when counter space or bread fit is critical.
- Confusing a feature with a test result: bagel, defrost, reheat and extra-lift functions describe capability, not measured performance.
- Forgetting local electrical terms: voltage, plug type, warranty and returns can differ outside the UK.
- Reaching into a connected toaster: cancel, unplug and cool the appliance before clearing any obstruction.
Who should consider it
Good fit
- Households that regularly need four slices at once.
- People who want two pairs of slots set differently.
- Users who toast bagels or frozen bread and want dedicated modes.
- Kitchens where the yellow finish is a deliberate style choice.
- Buyers who value a removable crumb tray and a raised position for small slices.
- Shoppers comfortable making a feature-led decision when exact-model public scores are unavailable.
Think twice if
- You need a verified independent score before buying; the public yellow-model score is not available.
- You require confirmed slot dimensions for very large bread; the published measurements found are for the blue variant.
- You want a compact appliance; a four-slot toaster will generally occupy more counter space than a two-slot model.
- You mostly toast one slice and have no use for split controls.
- You are buying outside the UK; voltage, warranty, price and plug details must be checked for your country.
How to compare it with alternatives
Compare competing four-slice toasters using the same questions rather than relying on colour or feature count:
| Comparison axis | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Browning quality | Independent evenness and repeatability scores, not just the number of dial positions |
| Flexible loading | Whether two pairs can run independently and whether one or two slices can be used efficiently |
| Frozen and bagel use | Dedicated modes and clear operating instructions |
| Slice compatibility | Official slot length, width and depth for the exact model suffix |
| Safety | Outer-temperature and safety results from a named test programme |
| Cleaning | Removable trays, accessible surfaces and instructions against liquid ingress |
| Ownership | Local warranty duration, service arrangements, current price and replacement availability |
| Countertop practicalities | Overall footprint, cable length, lever clearance and access to the crumb tray |
This framework matters because the CTOC4003Y’s public specification sheet is strong on controls and capacity, while its exact-model performance scores are not public. A cheaper toaster with fewer functions could still be the better choice if independent testing shows more even browning, or if its slots and warranty suit your kitchen better.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

De’Longhi’s UK material showed a £114.99 price in an indexed snapshot. One indexed product page showed the yellow model available to add to a basket, while a range listing showed it out of stock. These contradictory states can result from timing, regional inventory or separate catalogue records. Treat £114.99 as a historical snapshot, not a current offer.
Before paying, confirm all of the following on the live listing:
- The model code is CTOC4003.Y or CTOC4003Y, not merely “Icona Capitals.”
- The colour is New York Yellow.
- The seller states a current delivered price and dispatch estimate.
- The plug, voltage and warranty match your country.
- The returns policy covers an unwanted or faulty appliance.
- The listed dimensions and cable length apply to the yellow suffix if those details matter to your kitchen.
- The seller can provide support or replacement arrangements after the retailer’s return period.
Do not transfer CHOICE’s A$209 price or one-year warranty to a UK purchase. Those terms belong to its Australian listing and may differ by retailer and jurisdiction. If a retailer uses a generic Icona Capitals photograph, ask for the exact suffix in writing before ordering.
Bottom-line buying advice
The CTOC4003Y makes the most sense when you specifically want a yellow four-slice toaster with independent two-slot controls and dedicated bagel, defrost and reheat functions. Its 1,800 W specification, removable crumb tray and extra-lift design add practical appeal. The deciding uncertainty is toast quality: the exact yellow-model CHOICE scores are not publicly visible, and blue-variant Which? information comes from a different colour and dated test programme. Buy only after confirming live UK stock, price, warranty and the exact suffix, and treat the feature list as capability—not proof of superior browning.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the De’Longhi CTOC4003Y the same as CTOC4003.Y?
Yes. De’Longhi uses CTOC4003.Y for the New York Yellow model, while some retailers omit the dot and write CTOC4003Y. Check the full suffix and colour because the range also includes blue and white variants.

How many slices can it toast, and can the settings differ?
It has four slots arranged as two independently controlled pairs. Each pair can use its own browning setting or function, subject to the instructions for the appliance.
Does it have a bagel and frozen-bread setting?
Yes. De’Longhi lists bagel and defrost functions, as well as reheat and cancel. The first cycle should be monitored because bread size, moisture and freezing affect results.
What are the CTOC4003Y’s power and weight specifications?
The indexed De’Longhi technical page lists 1,800 W, 220–240 V and a weight of 3.046 kg. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements of speed or energy use.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Are the 14.1 × 3.3 × 12.4 cm slot dimensions confirmed for the yellow toaster?
No. Which? lists those dimensions, along with a 72 cm cable, for the related blue CTOC4003.BL variant. Verify measurements for CTOC4003.Y if unusually large bread or cable reach matters.
Does the toaster have a removable crumb tray and extra lift?
Yes. De’Longhi lists a removable crumb tray and an extra-lift position intended to help remove small slices. The extra-lift wording is a design claim, not an independent safety test.
What independent test score did the yellow model receive?
CHOICE lists the exact yellow model in its expert testing, but the accessible page restricts the overall rating and category scores to members. No public score should be inferred from the listing alone.
What should I check before buying in the UK?
Confirm live stock, the current delivered price, the CTOC4003.Y or CTOC4003Y suffix, New York Yellow colour, UK plug and voltage, warranty, returns policy, and any dimensions needed for your counter or bread.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: choose the CTOC4003Y for its four-slot capacity, split controls and New York Yellow design, not because a public test score proves superior browning. Verify the exact suffix, live UK price, stock, dimensions and warranty before ordering.
