Verdict: The De’Longhi HFX85W20C is a tall, 2,000 W room heater that also provides fan-only cooling and particle filtration. Its 3D Multi Air design is attractive if you need one appliance for seasonal heating and basic air cleaning, but the evidence does not justify treating it as a proven whole-room purifier. The model is listed as discontinued, so availability, warranty support and replacement-filter access matter as much as the specification sheet.
The headline purification figure—up to 99.9% efficiency—applies only to 5 μm particles at 60 m³/h on cooling-fan speed 5 in a third-party test to EN 1822:2010. It is not a blanket result for every particle size, fan mode, room or health outcome. Independent public testing is limited, and detailed CHOICE results are reserved for members.

What the HFX85W20C is
De’Longhi describes the HFX85W20C, also called 3D Multi Air, as three appliances in one: a heater, a cooling fan and an air purifier. That combination explains its tall tower form and broad controls. In winter it is intended to provide space heating; in warmer weather it can move room air without heating; and its filter is intended to reduce airborne particles as air passes through the unit.

This is a room-comfort appliance, not a substitute for ventilation, source control or a medical-grade infection-control system. A purifier can only treat air that reaches its intake, while a heater or fan changes temperature and circulation. Results therefore depend on room size, doors and windows, furniture, placement, fan speed, filter condition and how long the unit runs.

Key specifications and the figures you should trust
| Specification | Published figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum power | 2,000 W | Figure from De’Longhi’s 2018 Comfort brochure; actual electrical use varies with thermostat cycling and mode. |
| Brochure dimensions | 270 × 270 × 850 mm | Regional brochure specification. Measure the actual unit and clearance at home. |
| Weight | 7.4 kg | 2018 brochure specification. |
| Electrical rating | 220–240 V, 50 Hz | Use only where the rating on your regional unit and local supply agree. |
| CHOICE heater listing | One heat setting; six fan settings; claimed maximum 2,000 W; 7.3 kg; 1.7 m cord | CHOICE’s public listing; publication date is not visible in the accessible record. |
| CHOICE air-purifier listing | Ten fan settings; claimed room size “more than 4 m²”; 84 × 19 × 23 cm; 7.3 kg | Another public listing with different dimensions and fan-count wording. Treat it as a separate source/context rather than a replacement for the brochure. |
| Purification claim | Up to 99.9% efficiency | Only for 5 μm particles at 60 m³/h, cooling-fan speed 5, in a third-party test to EN 1822:2010. |
The conflicting dimensions and weights are a reminder to check the rating plate, packaging and local manual for your exact regional version. The brochure is dated 2018, while public listings may describe a different measurement convention or listing context. Neither source establishes a current production revision.
How the purification claim should be read
It is a particle-efficiency result, not a room-removal guarantee
“Up to 99.9%” sounds like a room-wide reduction, but the stated test is narrower. The brochure identifies 5 μm particles, an airflow of 60 m³/h and cooling-fan speed 5. Those conditions describe how the filter performed in that test setup. They do not establish the percentage removed from every room, the result at all ten listed fan settings, or performance against gases, odors, smoke components or microorganisms.
Why the test standard matters
EN 1822:2010 is a filter-efficiency standard that uses a most-penetrating-particle-size (MPPS) test approach. The brochure attributes the figure to a third-party test against that standard. That attribution is useful, but it still does not provide a clean-air-delivery rate, noise measurements, energy measurements or an independently verified room-size recommendation.

- It does not say how quickly a particular bedroom or living room reaches a target particle concentration.
- It does not cover every particle size or pollutant type.
- It does not establish health benefits or protection from infection.
- It does not prove equal performance when the filter is loaded, installed incorrectly or overdue for replacement.
Use the number as a description of a controlled filter test, not as a promise that 99.9% of particles in your room will disappear.
Heating: what to expect from 2,000 W
The HFX85W20C’s heating capacity is listed as 2,000 W, with CHOICE describing one heat setting and a claimed maximum of 2,000 W. That is typical of a portable electric space heater: it can add heat directly to the room while its fan distributes warmed air. A thermostat or automatic control may cycle the heater rather than drawing maximum power continuously, but the available sources do not provide measured duty cycles, warm-up times or temperature accuracy.

At the rated maximum, 2,000 W equals 2 kWh of electricity for each hour of continuous full-power operation. Your bill depends on the tariff in your location and on how often the thermostat cycles. To estimate cost, multiply 2 kW by the hours operated and your electricity price per kWh; do not assume the appliance draws 2 kW every minute of a normal session.
Heating strengths
- One appliance can provide immediate convected heat without installing a permanent heater.
- The fan can distribute warmed air rather than leaving heat concentrated beside the outlet.
- A tower footprint can be easier to place than a wide radiator, although the 850 mm height requires a stable, unobstructed position.
Heating limitations
- No independent test in the available public material establishes room-heating speed, temperature uniformity or thermostat accuracy.
- A 2,000 W rating is an input-power figure, not a guarantee for a particular room size or insulation level.
- Portable heaters still require clearances, a stable floor and an outlet suitable for the rated load. Follow the safety instructions supplied with your regional unit.
Fan-only operation and airflow
In fan mode, the HFX85W20C moves air without the heating element operating. De’Longhi’s support material covers fan mode and airflow direction, while the CHOICE air-purifier listing describes ten fan settings. The heater listing, by contrast, describes six fan settings. Because those public records disagree, check the control panel and manual on your unit rather than assuming a particular number of speeds.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFan-only airflow can improve comfort by increasing evaporation from skin and mixing warm and cool pockets. It does not lower the room’s actual heat the way an air conditioner does. The purifier also works only while air is being drawn through its filter; a higher setting may process more air but can increase sound and power use.
Controls, timer and operating workflow
The official support page documents heating, fan mode, timer use, cleaning, maintenance, display messages, airflow direction and operation without the remote. Exact button labels can vary by regional version, so use the labels printed on your appliance and the manual supplied with it.
- Check the rating first. Confirm that the voltage and frequency on the unit match your local electrical supply. The brochure’s 220–240 V, 50 Hz specification is regional, not universal.
- Place the tower upright. Set it on a stable, level surface with the air inlet and outlet clear. Do not cover the grille or place objects on top.
- Select the required function. Choose heating for warmth, fan for air movement, or the purification-capable airflow mode described in your manual. Start at a low setting and increase it only as needed.
- Set the timer when you need a defined run period. The support documentation includes timer instructions. Verify the countdown or indicator on the display before leaving the appliance unattended.
- Adjust airflow direction. Use the documented direction control to aim air away from faces, curtains and other heat-sensitive items.
- Operate without the remote if necessary. De’Longhi documents remote-free operation through the appliance controls. Keep the remote and manual together if you later need a function not exposed on the panel.
- Stop before cleaning. Switch off, unplug and allow the heater to cool before touching the grille or filter area.
Do not infer a safety feature, child lock, oscillation range or automatic shut-off behavior unless your regional manual explicitly lists it. Those details are version-specific and are not established by the public records available here.

Filter design, replacement and maintenance
De’Longhi Australia’s spare-parts catalogue lists a 360-degree, double-layer particulate air filter suitable for the HFX85W20C. That confirms that a model-compatible replacement is listed by the manufacturer, but it does not establish a universal part number, price, service life or availability in every country.
Before ordering a filter
- Match the complete model code, including any regional suffix shown on the rating label.
- Confirm that the seller’s filter is intended for the HFX85W20C rather than a visually similar tower.
- Check the return policy and packaging condition; a filter that has been opened or stored badly may not perform as intended.
- Verify delivery and warranty coverage in your country, especially because the appliance is listed as discontinued.
Cleaning routine
Use the cleaning and maintenance procedure in the official support instructions. In general, unplug the appliance before accessing the filter area, keep dust from falling into the motor housing, and reinstall every removable part exactly as shown. Do not wash a filter unless the manual specifically says it is washable; a particulate filter can be damaged by moisture, and a damp filter can create another maintenance problem.
The sources do not state a replacement interval. Replace the filter when the regional instructions, an indicator or a visible condition requires it, rather than applying an invented number of months. If airflow weakens, the appliance becomes unusually noisy or a display message appears, inspect the filter and consult the documented message meanings before continuing to run it.
Noise, airflow and energy: what is not independently established
Neither the brochure nor the public CHOICE summaries provide accessible independent measurements for sound level, clean-air delivery rate, energy use in each mode or thermostat cycling. That means the HFX85W20C cannot be ranked responsibly against another purifier or heater on those axes from the available evidence.
When comparing units in a shop or from a returnable retailer, listen at the speed you would actually use, not only at the lowest setting. Ask for the filter’s replacement cost and stock status, and check whether the manufacturer publishes a standardized airflow or CADR figure. A high fan count is not the same as a high clean-air-delivery rate.

Footprint and placement decisions
The brochure’s 270 × 270 × 850 mm dimensions describe a tall tower roughly 85 cm high and 27 cm wide and deep. CHOICE’s air-purifier listing gives 84 × 19 × 23 cm, while its heater listing gives a 1.7 m cord and 7.3 kg weight. These figures may reflect different measurement methods or product-listing contexts, so measure the unit you are buying and leave enough surrounding space for unobstructed intake and discharge.
A tall body can fit beside a desk or cabinet where a broad heater would not, but the height makes stability important. Keep it away from water, wet floors, loose fabrics and traffic routes. Do not place it where curtains or furniture can block the intake, and avoid aiming hot air directly at a wall or heat-sensitive object.
Discontinued status changes the buying decision
CHOICE lists the HFX85W20C as discontinued in both its heater and air-purifier records. Discontinued does not mean every remaining unit is defective; it means you should treat stock, warranty and parts as questions to verify rather than assumptions.
Check these before paying
- Is the unit new, refurbished or used, and is the condition documented?
- Does the seller provide a local warranty, a valid return period and proof of purchase?
- Can you obtain the correct replacement filter in your country now, not merely see an old catalogue entry?
- Does the plug, voltage and frequency match your electrical system?
- Are all controls, the remote and the filter present?
Do not pay a premium simply because a listing calls the model “rare.” A discontinued appliance can be a sensible buy only when the price reflects its age and you have a realistic route to filters and service.

A dedicated purifier may offer clearer airflow and CADR data, while a simple heater may be easier to service. The HFX85W20C’s advantage is consolidation: one tower, one outlet and one set of controls for three functions. Its compromise is that the available evidence does not show whether it matches specialized products in any single function.
Troubleshooting guide
The unit will not start
Confirm that it is plugged into a live, correctly rated outlet and that the power switch or control-panel command has been activated. Check for a timer setting or display message. If the problem persists, unplug the unit and use the regional service instructions rather than repeatedly resetting it.
Airflow feels weak
Check that the inlet and outlet are unobstructed and inspect the filter according to the maintenance instructions. A loaded filter can restrict airflow. Do not run the appliance with a missing or incorrectly seated filter.
There is an unexpected display message
De’Longhi’s support material includes display-message guidance, but the available public summary does not identify individual codes. Record the exact message, switch off safely and follow the instructions for your regional version. Do not guess that a code means a filter reminder or a harmless status indicator.
The room is not warming as expected
Check that heating mode is selected, the outlet is clear and the room’s doors and windows are not defeating the heat input. A 2,000 W rating does not guarantee a particular temperature rise, especially in a large or poorly insulated room.
The fan runs but the air still feels hot
Fan-only mode circulates air; it does not provide refrigeration. Verify that the heating function is off and allow the element to cool. If heat continues when the controls indicate fan-only operation, stop using the appliance and seek service.
Who should consider it
A reasonable fit
- You want one tower for occasional electric heating, air circulation and basic particulate filtration.
- You can verify local voltage, a return policy and replacement-filter access before purchase.
- You are comfortable judging the appliance by its documented functions rather than by the 99.9% headline alone.
Look elsewhere if
- You need independently verified clean-air delivery, sound or room-size performance.
- You require guaranteed long-term parts availability or a current product warranty.
- You need true cooling, humidity control or pollutant-specific gas removal.
- You cannot confirm that a replacement filter is available for your region.
Bottom-line assessment
The De’Longhi HFX85W20C is best understood as a discontinued multi-function tower with a 2,000 W heater, fan-only operation and a replaceable particulate filter. Its documented 99.9% efficiency claim is specific and technically qualified, not a universal room-purification promise. The appliance may make sense when consolidation and a compact tower matter more than independently proven performance, but buyers should verify the exact regional specification, condition, warranty and filter path before committing.
