Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose the configuration, not just the badge. Dell positions XPS as its premium consumer range, while current U.S. listings use newer everyday names such as Dell 15, Dell 14 Plus, Dell 16 Plus, Dell 14S and Dell 16S. “Inspiron” still appears in searches and in a Dell comparison reference, but it no longer maps automatically to one current replacement model.
For a highly portable system, a premium display and the lightest current XPS option, start with the XPS 13. Choose the XPS 14 or XPS 16 when screen area and creator-oriented positioning matter more than entry price. If your priority is a conventional everyday or home-learning laptop, compare the exact Dell Plus, S or numbered configuration against the same requirements rather than assuming every XPS is faster or every everyday model is cheaper.

What changed between Inspiron and today’s Dell lineup?
Inspiron was historically Dell’s familiar everyday-consumer family name. In the current U.S. catalog reviewed for 2026, Dell presents everyday notebooks under names including Dell 15, Dell 14 Plus, Dell 16 Plus, Dell 14S and Dell 16S instead. Dell also shows an internal comparison between the Dell 14 Plus (DB14250) and Inspiron 14 Plus (7440). That reference confirms that the names coexist in Dell’s documentation, but it does not establish a one-for-one successor for every Inspiron model.

A new Dell 15 might be the closest fit for one buyer, while a Dell 14 Plus, Dell 14S or another configuration could be more appropriate for someone else. Screen technology, processor generation, memory, storage, ports and support options can differ even when two laptops occupy a similar price band. Treat “Inspiron replacement” as a shopping question, not as a model number.

Current XPS models at a glance
The U.S. XPS listings retrieved for 2026 cover three screen sizes. The prices below were Dell’s listed starting prices at the time of retrieval, not permanent prices or quotes for a configured machine. Dell defines a starting price as the lowest available price for a preconfigured base or recommended starting configuration; custom hardware and service selections can change the total.
| Model | Display information | Listed weight | Dell battery claim | Retrieved U.S. starting price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| XPS 13 (DX13260) | 13.4-inch 2.5K touch display | 2.2 lb (1 kg) | Up to 17 hours | $699.99 |
| XPS 14 (DA14260) | 14-inch display; battery figure uses a specified 2K display at 250 nits | 1.36 kg | Up to 31 hours of streaming under Dell’s specified test conditions | $1,849.99 |
| XPS 16 (DA16260) | 16-inch display; battery figure uses a specified 2K display at 250 nits | 3.65 lb (1.65 kg) | Up to 31 hours of streaming under Dell’s specified test conditions | $2,249.99 |
All three are listed with Series 3 Intel Core Ultra processor options and Windows 11 Home or Pro in Dell’s U.S. materials. The XPS 13 is the lightest example in this sourced lineup. The XPS 14 and XPS 16 trade additional mass and cost for larger working areas and Dell’s creator-oriented positioning.
How to read the XPS numbers
The number primarily signals class and screen size, not a guaranteed performance tier. A higher-numbered XPS can have a larger panel and a different thermal or graphics configuration, while a lower-numbered model can be the better choice for travel. Compare the processor, graphics, memory, SSD, panel and service selections on the exact stock-keeping configuration before drawing a performance conclusion.
What the current everyday Dell models offer
Dell’s everyday catalog includes the Dell 14 Plus (DB14250), Dell 16 Plus (DB16250), Dell 14S (DS14260), Dell 16S (DS16260) and Dell 15 (DC15250). Dell presents the Dell 15 as an everyday-computing and home-learning laptop. The Dell 16 Plus listing includes options for a QHD+ Mini LED screen and a battery claim of up to 20 hours. Those examples show why the everyday range cannot be dismissed as uniformly basic.

The everyday names also do not guarantee a lower price than every XPS configuration. An everyday model with a high-resolution panel, more memory, a larger SSD or upgraded support can overlap an entry XPS price, while a discounted or lightly configured XPS can cost less than a heavily configured everyday machine. Use the final configured totals and specifications as your comparison.
Which family is right for your workload?
Students and general office work
For web applications, documents, video calls and coursework, portability and a comfortable display often matter more than the family label. Dell specifically positions the XPS 13 for students and everyday users. Its 2.2-pound listed weight and 13.4-inch 2.5K touch panel suit a small bag and frequent movement, provided the chosen memory and storage meet your software needs.
A Dell 15 or a 14S/16S configuration can be sensible when you prefer a larger keyboard or screen and do not need the XPS design or premium positioning. Compare panel resolution, touch support, processor, RAM and SSD capacity; do not infer those details from “15,” “Plus” or “S” alone.
Content creation and mobile professional work
Dell’s own comparison page describes the XPS 14 as suited to creators on the move and the XPS 16 as suited to creators who want more screen space. Those descriptions are product positioning, not independent performance testing. For photo, video, 3D or other graphics-heavy software, check the exact CPU and GPU combination, memory capacity and display characteristics against the application’s requirements.
Rank #3
The XPS 14’s 14-inch format can be a middle ground for someone who travels but wants more room than a 13-inch class device. The XPS 16 provides the largest panel in this lineup and a listed weight of 1.65 kg, so it is better evaluated as a portable workstation-style option than as an ultra-light notebook.
Home learning and shared household use
A Dell 15 is explicitly presented for everyday computing and home learning. A larger 16-inch everyday model may be easier to read at a desk, while a 14-inch model is simpler to carry between rooms or classes. Decide whether the household needs touch, a high-resolution panel, longer stated battery life or a particular port layout, then compare the actual configurations.
Travel and commuting
The XPS 13 has the lowest listed weight among the sourced XPS examples at 2.2 pounds (1 kg). That makes it the natural starting point for commuters who value low carry weight. The XPS 14 weighs 1.36 kg, and the XPS 16 weighs 1.65 kg; both remain portable, but the difference is noticeable in a bag alongside a charger and accessories.
Large-screen multitasking
If your work involves side-by-side documents, timelines or wide spreadsheets, the XPS 16’s 16-inch panel or an everyday 16-inch model may reduce scrolling. Screen size alone does not tell you resolution, panel type, refresh features or brightness, so verify those fields for the exact listing.

Compare the specifications that actually affect your decision
Processor, NPU and graphics
Dell’s buying guidance identifies the CPU, NPU and GPU as relevant components. The CPU handles general application work, the NPU can accelerate supported artificial-intelligence workloads, and the GPU matters for graphics-intensive applications. A premium family name does not guarantee a particular level in any of these components. Two XPS configurations can differ, just as two everyday Dell configurations can.
Write down the applications you use and their minimum and recommended requirements. Then check the processor model and graphics configuration on the product page. For office work, a balanced processor with adequate memory may be more useful than paying for graphics capability you will not use. For editing, engineering or other GPU-sensitive work, prioritize the specific graphics option and cooling design represented by the configuration rather than the badge.
Memory and storage
RAM affects how many applications and browser tabs you can keep active; the SSD affects capacity and how much local data you can retain. Dell’s buying guide calls out both memory and storage as comparison factors. Check the installed amount before comparing prices, because a low starting price can represent a smaller configuration than the one you actually need.
For a long ownership period, budget for the memory and SSD capacity your workload requires now. Do not assume that a similarly named model has the same configuration or upgrade path as an older Inspiron or another XPS generation; verify the current specification sheet.

Display
Compare screen size, resolution, panel type, touch support, brightness and refresh features on the exact configuration. The sourced XPS 13 listing specifies a 13.4-inch 2.5K touch display. The XPS 14 and XPS 16 battery figures refer to a specified 2K display at 250 nits, while the everyday Dell 16 Plus listing includes QHD+ Mini LED options. These are different display choices, not interchangeable claims about every configuration in the family.
Higher resolution can make text and detailed creative work sharper, but it can also affect power use. Touch is useful for pen or direct-manipulation workflows but may be unnecessary for a desk-bound office setup. Choose based on how you work rather than assuming the most expensive panel is always the best fit.
Battery claims
Dell lists up to 17 hours for the XPS 13 and up to 31 hours of streaming for the XPS 14 and XPS 16 when paired with the specified 2K, 250-nit display. Dell describes these as manufacturer estimates and cautions that actual runtime varies with configuration, software, use and operating conditions. Streaming-test results are not promises of mixed-use battery life involving high brightness, video calls, compiling code or graphics work.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare an XPS with a former Inspiron-style choice
- Set a real budget. Record the total for the exact processor, RAM, SSD, display and support selection. Keep the retrieval date beside any advertised starting price, because discounts and inventory change.
- List your non-negotiable applications. Include creative, engineering, accessibility and peripheral requirements. Use those requirements to determine CPU, NPU and GPU needs.
- Choose a carrying and screen-size target. Decide whether a 13.4-inch, 14-inch, 15-inch or 16-inch class display is practical. Include the charger in your travel-weight decision.
- Match memory and storage to the ownership period. Select enough RAM for your normal multitasking and enough SSD space for applications and files, rather than comparing base configurations that you would immediately upgrade.
- Check the display specification. Verify resolution, panel technology, touch, brightness and refresh features. A model name does not provide those details by itself.
- Evaluate battery evidence carefully. Note whether Dell’s number is a streaming estimate, which display it uses and what configuration produced it. Expect real-world results to vary.
- Compare support and service selections. Dell states that service choices can raise or lower the displayed starting price. Include the coverage you actually want in both candidates before deciding.
- Recheck the model code. Record the code—such as DX13260, DA14260, DA16260 or DB14250—so a retailer or support representative is quoting the same machine.
Price: why the headline number can mislead
The retrieved U.S. starting prices were $699.99 for the XPS 13, $1,849.99 for the XPS 14 and $2,249.99 for the XPS 16. These figures describe Dell’s available base or recommended starting configurations at that time. They are not a promise that every XPS 13, 14 or 16 will cost that amount, and they do not include an assumption about the memory, SSD, display or support package you need.
Price the complete configuration twice: first with the minimum specification that meets your workload, then with the capacity you expect to need for the laptop’s intended life. Perform the same exercise for a current everyday Dell model. This prevents a low family starting price from hiding the cost of a required upgrade and prevents an expensive premium configuration from being compared with an under-equipped alternative.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming Inspiron has a single current successor. Current everyday listings use several Dell names. Compare by model code and specification.
- Using the family name as a performance shortcut. CPU, NPU, GPU, RAM and SSD vary by configuration. Read the component list.
- Treating maximum battery life as normal mixed use. Dell’s figures are estimates tied to test conditions. Video calls, high brightness and demanding software can reduce runtime.
- Comparing screen sizes without panel details. A 14-inch or 16-inch label does not establish resolution, touch, brightness or refresh behavior.
- Comparing base prices after selecting different support. Dell says configuration and service selections can change the starting price. Put equivalent coverage in both totals.
- Ignoring the weight of the larger option. The XPS 13 is listed at 2.2 pounds, versus 1.36 kg for the XPS 14 and 1.65 kg for the XPS 16. Include the charger and accessories when assessing portability.
- Assuming every everyday model is slower or cheaper. The Dell 16 Plus, for example, is listed with QHD+ Mini LED options and up to 20 hours of stated battery life. Evaluate the configuration rather than its category.
Practical recommendations by buyer type
Choose the XPS 13 when
- You want the lightest sourced XPS option for commuting or campus travel.
- A 13.4-inch 2.5K touch display suits your work.
- Your applications fit the selected Series 3 Intel Core Ultra, memory and storage configuration.
- You accept that the $699.99 figure was a time-sensitive starting price, not a configured quote.
Choose the XPS 14 when
- You need more screen area than the XPS 13 while remaining relatively mobile.
- Your creative or professional workflow benefits from the model Dell positions for creators on the move.
- You have checked the exact graphics, memory, storage and panel option rather than relying on the XPS label.
- The configured price is justified by your workload; Dell’s retrieved starting price was $1,849.99.
Choose the XPS 16 when
- A 16-inch workspace is more valuable than minimum carry weight.
- You want the model Dell positions for creators seeking more screen space.
- You are comfortable with a listed 1.65 kg weight and a retrieved starting price of $2,249.99.
- The selected CPU, GPU, RAM, SSD and display meet the applications you actually run.
Choose a current everyday Dell model when
- Your priority is straightforward home, school or office computing and a familiar larger-screen format.
- A Dell 15, Dell 14S, Dell 16S or Plus model provides the right configuration at a lower total cost for your needs.
- You prefer to spend on memory, storage, display or support rather than on the XPS family’s premium positioning.
- You have compared the exact model code and specifications instead of assuming it is a direct Inspiron replacement.
Bottom line
XPS is Dell’s premium consumer range, but “premium” is not a substitute for checking the specification sheet. The XPS 13 emphasizes low weight and a 13.4-inch touch display; the XPS 14 and XPS 16 add screen area and creator-oriented positioning at substantially higher retrieved starting prices. Current everyday Dell models use names such as Dell 15, Dell Plus and Dell S, so an older Inspiron name should be treated as a starting point for comparison rather than a one-model answer. Select the machine whose configured CPU/GPU, memory, storage, display, portability, battery expectations and total price fit your work.
