Choose the 13-inch MacBook Air with M5 if you want macOS and value its listed display specifications, MagSafe charging, and Apple’s stated battery-life estimates. Neither is a universal winner: compare the exact memory, storage, ports, and price of the configurations available where you live.
Which laptop should you choose?
Start with the operating system and the applications you need. The current XPS 13 is a Windows laptop with 2026 Intel Core Series 3 and Core Ultra Series 3 options; the current 13-inch MacBook Air uses Apple’s M5 chip and macOS. If a required work or school application only supports one platform, that may settle the choice. The product specifications alone cannot determine compatibility for your particular apps or workplace.

- Choose the XPS 13 if you need Windows, specifically want a touch display, or want to select among Dell’s listed processor and memory configurations.
- Choose the MacBook Air if you want macOS, use Apple devices and services, or prefer its listed display, MagSafe charging, and Apple-stated battery estimates.
- Compare specific SKUs if neither operating system is a requirement. Memory, storage, processor, port standards, and local pricing can differ within each product family.

How do the screens and input differ?
XPS 13: touch and variable refresh rate
Dell lists a 2.5K LCD touchscreen with a variable refresh rate of 30Hz to 120Hz, plus a backlit keyboard. Touch may be useful if you prefer direct interaction with on-screen controls, but it is a preference rather than a universal advantage.

Check memory and storage before comparing prices
Configuration matters especially for the XPS 13. TechRadar reports that its reviewed US base configuration had 8GB of RAM; moving to 16GB also moved that reviewed configuration to a 512GB SSD. Dell lists options up to 32GB of memory and 1TB of storage, but the exact combinations and prices depend on the configuration.

Apple lists 16GB unified memory in current base configurations, with higher-memory options and storage choices that vary by model. Compare the memory and storage in the actual listings, not just the entry price or product-family name. A price for an 8GB XPS and one for a 16GB MacBook Air would not be a like-for-like comparison.

The published figures are not the result of a controlled XPS-versus-Air test. Apple states up to 18 hours of video streaming and up to 15 hours of wireless web use for the MacBook Air. Dell states up to 17 hours of streaming for the XPS 13, based on a Dell lab test conducted in May 2026 on a Core 5 320 system with 16GB memory and a 512GB SSD, at 150 nits with wireless enabled; Dell says actual battery life varies.

- Windows 11 PRO | Fingerprint Reader
Separately, Tom’s Guide measured 14 hours and 26 minutes on its XPS 13 review unit during continuous Wi-Fi web surfing at 150 nits. That result uses a different workload from Dell’s streaming test and does not compare the XPS directly with an Air under the same conditions. Use these figures as context, not as a reliable ranking of which laptop will last longer in your day.
Will your ports and accessories work?
Apple lists two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, a MagSafe 3 charging port, and a headphone jack on the 13-inch Air. The XPS 13 is described as having two USB-C ports, but the standard varies by configuration: TechRadar identifies USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 on its reviewed unit and Thunderbolt 4 on its Core Ultra 7 configuration.

If you connect external displays, use a dock, or need particular transfer speeds, check the port standard on the exact XPS SKU and confirm that the dock supports your display and accessory setup. Do not assume that every XPS 13 configuration has Thunderbolt 4. The Air’s MagSafe connection also leaves its USB-C ports available for other uses while charging.
Are they equally portable?
Dell lists the XPS 13 at 1kg (2.2lb) and 12.7mm thick. Tom’s Guide lists 2.2lb and 0.50 inches for its review unit. These figures support the XPS’s ultraportable positioning, but they do not establish that every regional SKU or configuration is identical. The cited Apple specifications do not provide a weight figure for the Air, so this comparison cannot settle portability by weight alone.

How should you compare price and value?
Dell’s 2026 article lists a US starting price of $699, or $599 for eligible students subject to Dell’s offer terms. Treat those as dated US examples, not guaranteed current prices or broadly available discounts. A current live price for a comparable MacBook Air configuration was not established.
For a useful comparison, select the processor, memory, and storage you would actually buy on each side, then check current prices in your market. Include any adapter or dock you genuinely need, especially if your peripherals depend on a particular port standard. The lower advertised starting price is not necessarily the lower price for a comparable setup.
A practical decision checklist
- Confirm your operating system. List any required apps and check their support for Windows or macOS before choosing.
- Choose the display and input you prefer. Decide whether you want the XPS touchscreen or the Air’s listed display features.
- Match memory and storage. Compare the exact configurations, paying particular attention to the XPS base configuration reviewed with 8GB RAM.
- Check ports against your equipment. Verify the XPS port standard on the exact SKU and confirm external-display and dock compatibility.
- Use battery estimates cautiously. Note the workload and test method behind each figure instead of comparing the maximum hours as if they came from one test.
- Compare current local prices. Use equivalent configurations and account for eligibility restrictions on any student offer.
Dell describes the XPS 13 as “the lightest and most accessible expression of everything XPS has always stood for.” That is Dell’s characterization of its product, not independent comparative testing. Dell Technologies
