Dell documents its hardware and supported operating-system configurations, but those specifications alone do not show how a particular used unit performs today or whether it works with a specific current service.
What is the Dell Wyse 3040 for?
Dell describes the Wyse 3040 as an entry-level thin-client platform. Its user guide explains that it connects to a monitor and uses remote-access client software for VDI or cloud-based computing. In other words, the device is designed to access computing resources elsewhere rather than serve as a general-purpose local workstation.

Dell’s guide calls it a “low-cost entry level thin client platform.” That is Dell’s product description, not evidence of a current price advantage or a comparison with other devices.
Dell Wyse 3040 specifications
The following are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent performance-test results. Dell documents the available storage configurations as 8 GB or 16 GB eMMC; verify which one is present on a specific unit.
#1 Best Overall
- Part Numbers: 4K8XT, FGYD2, 895W8, 2WDPR, C63YJ, 3C8N9, 5MXMG
- Ports 3 USB 2.0 1 USB 3.1 1 Audio-mic combo jack 2 DisplayPort
- Connectivity: RJ45 (Wired Ethernet)
- Chipset: Intel Quad Core 1.44 GHz
- Memory: 2GB RAM
| Component | Dell-listed specification |
|---|---|
| Processor | Intel Cherry Trail x5-Z8350, quad-core, 1.44 GHz |
| Memory | 2 GB DDR3L 1600 MHz, soldered |
| Storage | 8 GB or 16 GB eMMC, soldered |
| Display | Two DisplayPort outputs; dual-display support up to 2560 × 1600 at 60 Hz |
| Wired networking | 10/100/1000 Ethernet |
| Wireless | Optional wireless/Bluetooth module |
| Chassis and expansion | Sealed chassis accessible with tools; no HDD/SSD support; optional wall or VESA mounting |
| Power input | Dell lists configurations of 3 A at 5 V DC and 2 A at 12 V DC |
These details come from Dell’s Wyse 3040 system specifications. Because the memory and eMMC are soldered and the chassis is sealed, do not assume RAM or storage can be upgraded like components in a typical desktop.
Ports, displays, and setup
The two DisplayPort outputs give the Wyse 3040 a dual-monitor option, within Dell’s stated maximum resolution and refresh rate. Choose a cable or adapter that matches the monitor’s input; the device’s DisplayPort output does not mean every monitor cable will connect directly.

Wired gigabit Ethernet is documented, while wireless networking is optional rather than guaranteed on every unit. Check the configuration before relying on Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Optional VESA or wall mounting can help with a compact installation, but Dell’s specification does not establish which mounting parts are included with a particular second-hand device.

Operating systems and remote-work compatibility
Dell’s user guide covers Wyse ThinOS, PCoIP-enabled Wyse ThinOS, and Wyse ThinLinux configurations. The guide’s coverage identifies configurations Dell documented; it does not establish compatibility with every current VDI platform, cloud service, browser, or locally installed application. Confirm that the exact unit’s operating system and firmware meet the requirements of the remote-access service you plan to use.

- Intel Pentium Silver Processor J5005
- 16G eMMC
- 4GB 2400MHz DDR4
- Intel Wireless ACC 9560
The operating system and configuration matter more here than a conventional desktop checklist. A thin client depends on a suitable remote environment and client software. The available documentation does not establish the support lifecycle of a given unit or its current compatibility with a named service.

- Memory and storage: Confirm the unit has 2 GB memory and determine whether it has 8 GB or 16 GB eMMC. Both are soldered, so do not buy expecting a routine upgrade.
- Power label and adapter: Check the input rating on the specific device and match the supply to it. Dell lists both 5 V and 12 V configurations, so do not assume power supplies are interchangeable.
- Operating system and intended service: Identify the installed configuration and check it against the current requirements of your VDI or cloud provider.
- Connections: Confirm the DisplayPort outputs, Ethernet, and any optional wireless module meet your installation needs; account for the monitor’s connector when choosing a cable.
- Condition and included items: Ask about functional and cosmetic condition, power supply, and any mounting hardware, then review the seller’s return terms.
Dell’s Wyse 3040 user guide describes the platform and its intended remote-access role. The specifications and guide document the product as designed; they do not establish the performance, software support, or condition of an aged or used unit.
