Dell announced a broad PC-branding change at CES in January 2025, introducing Dell, Dell Pro and Dell Pro Max in place of familiar names including XPS, Inspiron and Latitude. A year later, Dell reversed part of that plan: in January 2026, it said XPS was returning as its premium consumer laptop brand and Precision was returning for demanding professional work.
What Dell announced at CES 2025
Dell’s January 2025 announcement grouped its PC portfolio under three names: Dell for consumer PCs, Dell Pro for professional PCs and Dell Pro Max for high-performance PCs. The company also described Plus and Premium tiers. Dell said Premium would carry forward the XPS legacy, rather than continuing to use XPS as the product-family name. Dell’s January 2025 portfolio announcement presented the change as a unified approach to its AI PC lineup.

The ServeTheHome report on the CES announcement described the transition as replacing established XPS, Inspiron and Latitude branding with the new scheme. It also noted Dell’s plans to broaden AMD options, particularly in commercial systems, and said Alienware appeared unaffected at the time. Those observations describe the 2025 announcement, not Dell’s later portfolio update. ServeTheHome’s January 7, 2025 report.

The 2025 framework traded distinctive line names for broad labels and tiers. That might make a lineup appear more consistent, but it also made it harder to infer what a familiar name meant going forward. Readers raised concerns in the ServeTheHome article’s comments about distinguishing Dell products from other brands and finding specific models online. Those are individual reactions, not evidence of a measured customer response.

Dell’s own 2025 description supplied a bridge for XPS buyers by saying Premium would continue the XPS legacy. But a legacy or tier reference is not the same as keeping XPS as a searchable product-family name, and Dell’s 2026 announcement confirms that the company later chose to restore it.
What Dell changed in January 2026
In a January 6, 2026 company post, Dell said it had heard both positive feedback and requests for greater clarity. It announced that XPS was returning as its premium consumer laptop brand, replacing the Dell Premium name. The post’s wording was direct: “Dell XPS is back.” Dell also said Precision was returning for demanding professional workloads and that Dell Pro Max would be retired as new products launch. This was a partial reversal, not a statement that every former name had returned. The update explicitly restores XPS and Precision, while describing the retirement of Dell Premium and the phase-out of Dell Pro Max as new products launch. It does not say that Inspiron and Latitude are returning.

Dell describes its broad organization as Dell for personal use and Dell Pro for work. Alienware remains focused on gaming. Within that structure, XPS identifies premium consumer laptops, while Precision identifies Dell Pro systems for demanding professional work. Dell says it is returning to numbered series—3, 5, 7 and 9—for Dell Pro products. These are Dell’s announced categories; older listings and names may remain visible while product generations and listings transition.

For someone searching for a Dell laptop, the name alone may not tell the whole story during this transition. A 2025-era product may use the new naming framework, while Dell’s 2026 plan restores XPS and Precision for specified categories. Check the product’s full model name, generation and configuration in its listing rather than assuming every older brand has disappeared or returned.

The news is about branding, not a demonstrated change in computer performance. Dell’s 2025 launch materials include product claims and test figures, but those do not establish whether the naming change improved customer recognition, searchability or sales. Dell has not supplied an independent measure of those effects in the cited announcements.
