Dell Printer Drivers: Download and Update Easily on Windows 11 and Windows 10

To download or update a Dell printer driver, first identify the exact printer model, then let Windows Update search for a driver. If Windows cannot find one, use Dell’s Drivers & Downloads page with the printer’s Service Tag, Dell EMC Product ID, or model number, select your Windows version, run the downloaded installer, and restart when prompted.

The model and operating-system details matter: a driver for a similar Dell printer can fail, install the wrong features, or leave the printer showing as “Driver unavailable.” The steps below cover a clean Windows 11 or Windows 10 installation, manual recovery, and checks for USB and network printers.

What a Dell printer driver does

A printer driver is the Windows component that translates a document’s text, images, paper size, color choices, and print quality settings into instructions the printer understands. Windows may detect the physical printer without having a suitable driver. In that case, printing can fail, advanced options can disappear, or the printer can be listed as unavailable.

Drivers are model-specific. Even two Dell printers that look alike may use different print languages, firmware interfaces, or optional features such as duplexing and extra trays. Always confirm the complete model name before downloading anything.

Before downloading: identify the printer and Windows edition

Find the exact Dell model

  • Read the model label on the front, rear, or inside the printer’s access door.
  • Check the original purchase record or shipping label.
  • If the label shows a Service Tag or Dell EMC Product ID, record it. Dell’s driver page accepts those identifiers as well as a model search.
  • For a printer already connected to Windows, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners (Windows 11) or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners (Windows 10) and note the displayed name. Treat that name as a clue, then verify it against the physical label.

Check Windows and system type

Press Windows key + R, type winver, and press Enter to see the Windows release. To check whether Windows is 64-bit, open Settings > System > About and read System type. Select the matching Windows edition and architecture on a Dell download page when those choices are offered.

Windows 10 stopped receiving free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes after October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 computer may still install a compatible printer package, but the operating system’s support status is a separate issue from printer-driver availability. Moving a supported PC to Windows 11 is the safer long-term path.

Method 1: use Windows Update first

Microsoft identifies Windows Update as the recommended method for downloading, installing, and updating printer drivers. It is the least error-prone route when Microsoft or the printer manufacturer has published a compatible package to Windows Update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the PC to the internet and turn on the printer. For a USB printer, connect the cable directly to the PC rather than through an unpowered hub during setup.
  2. Open Settings > Windows Update in Windows 11. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates and allow all available updates to finish. Restart if Windows requests it.
  4. In Windows 11, open Advanced options > Optional updates > Driver updates and install a printer-related entry if one is listed. Windows 10 may show optional driver updates on the Windows Update page.
  5. Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners (or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners in Windows 10), select Add device, and wait for the printer to appear.
  6. If Windows lists the correct Dell model, select it and complete the add-printer wizard. Print a test page from the printer’s management screen.

Windows Update can supply a basic class driver rather than Dell’s full software suite. Basic printing may work while features such as scanning, status monitoring, booklet layouts, or vendor-specific finishing options remain unavailable. If the printer is detected but important features are missing, use the model-specific Dell package in Method 2.

Method 2: download the package from Dell

Open the model-specific download page

  1. Open Dell’s Drivers & Downloads support page.
  2. Enter the printer’s Service Tag, Dell EMC Product ID, or exact model. Dell also provides a detect-drivers scan that can identify a supported Dell product from the computer.
  3. Confirm that the result is the exact printer model, not a similar series or a multifunction model with a different suffix.
  4. Choose the Windows version and system type when Dell presents those filters. Read the package description to determine whether it is a print driver, a complete printer application, firmware, or an older operating-system package.
  5. Download the newest package offered for that model and your Windows edition. Save it somewhere easy to find, such as Downloads.

Install the downloaded driver

  1. Close programs that might be printing. If the printer is connected by USB, leave it powered on; follow the installer’s instruction about when to connect the cable.
  2. Open the downloaded file. Approve the Windows permission prompt only if the file is the package you deliberately downloaded for the correct model.
  3. Accept the license terms, choose the connection type requested by the installer (USB, wired network, or Wi-Fi), and let setup discover the printer. For a network printer, the computer and printer generally need to be on the same local network.
  4. When setup asks for a printer name or default status, keep the suggested name unless you manage several printers and need a clearer label.
  5. Allow the installer to copy its driver and supporting components. Restart Windows if the installer requests it, even if printing appears to work before the restart.
  6. Open the printer’s queue and print a Windows test page. Then test a document that uses the features you need, such as color, duplex, or a nonstandard paper size.

After the Dell installation, check Windows Update once more. Microsoft recommends checking for updates after a printer is installed because a newer compatible driver may have been published since the original setup package.

Windows Update or Dell’s page: which route should you use?

Consideration Windows Update Dell Drivers & Downloads
Model identification Windows can detect a connected printer, but the displayed name may be generic. Uses a Service Tag, Dell EMC Product ID, exact model, or detect-drivers scan for model-specific matching.
Newest Dell package Provides the package Microsoft has published through Windows Update; the newest Dell release may not be listed immediately. Shows the available Dell packages for the selected product and operating system.
Operating-system compatibility Windows selects a package it considers compatible with the installed edition. You must select the Windows version offered and verify that it matches your PC.
Setup effort Usually requires only checking for updates and adding the printer. Requires downloading and running an installer; connection choices and a restart may be required.
Best use First attempt for a supported Windows installation or a basic print-only setup. Fallback when Windows cannot find a driver, or when you need Dell-specific features.

Fix “driver unavailable” or a printer that will not install

Remove the incomplete printer entry

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners (Windows 11) or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners (Windows 10).
  2. Select the Dell printer and choose Remove. Confirm the removal.
  3. Restart the computer and power-cycle the printer: turn it off, wait several seconds, and turn it on again.
  4. Run Windows Update, then add the printer again. If it still shows as unavailable, use the exact-model Dell package rather than repeatedly adding the same generic entry.

Clear a stuck print queue

  1. Open the printer’s queue and cancel every pending job.
  2. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  3. Find Print Spooler, right-click it, and choose Restart.
  4. Try a test page. A job that remains stuck can indicate a damaged driver, a disconnected printer, or a communication problem rather than a paper or ink issue.

Remove an old driver package

If a previous installation conflicts with the new one, open Control Panel > Devices and Printers, select any printer, and choose Print server properties from the toolbar. On the Drivers tab, select the obsolete Dell package and choose Remove. Select the option to remove the driver and driver package when Windows offers it, then restart before installing the current package. Do not remove a driver that another working printer still depends on.

Check the connection path

  • USB: Try a different USB port and, if possible, a known-good printer cable. Avoid hubs while diagnosing detection problems.
  • Wi-Fi or Ethernet: Confirm that the printer is connected to the same network as the PC. A printer that obtained a new network address may need to be removed and added again.
  • Shared printer: The host computer must be on and sharing must still be enabled. Install the driver on the client PC if Windows asks for administrator approval.
  • Multiple similar entries: Remove duplicates and keep the entry that matches the current connection and exact model.

Verify the installed driver

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, select the printer, and open Printer properties or Manage.
  2. Use the Advanced tab to view the driver name. In some Windows builds, About or Driver information shows the version.
  3. For a lower-level check, open Device Manager, expand Print queues (or Printers), right-click the Dell device, choose Properties, and open the Driver tab.
  4. Confirm that Windows reports the device is working properly and that no warning icon appears. Print a test page and a representative document before relying on the installation.

Special cases and legacy packages

Windows 11 installation of an older Dell printer

Some older Dell models may not have a Windows 11-specific package. First try Windows Update, then check Dell’s page for a package explicitly offered for your Windows edition. A package listed only for an older operating system is not automatically a safe Windows 11 recommendation; compatibility may be incomplete and vendor utilities may fail even if basic printing works.

Dell Open Print Driver references

Dell’s Open Print Driver brochure describes a package intended to reduce the need to download separate page-description-language files. The brochure lists legacy operating systems, so it should not be treated as a current Windows 11 recommendation. Use the exact model page and the operating-system filter instead.

When no driver is listed

If neither Windows Update nor Dell lists a package for the exact model, record the Windows version, the printer’s connection type, and the precise error message. A generic Windows class driver may provide basic printing, but it may not expose scanning, status, duplex, or finishing controls. Installing a package for a different model is more likely to create errors than to solve the problem.

Optional shortcut

Outbyte Driver Updater is an optional shortcut for scanning more than 100 devices, identifying outdated, corrupted, or missing drivers, and installing official drivers while showing the current and recommended versions. It includes driver backup and restore and scheduled scans, runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, and offers a two-day free trial with no credit card before a subscription is required; results vary, and no tool repairs every printer problem.
